Wii U Catch-All

So in a game like ZombiU, which uses the pad in unique ways, what happens when you want to turn off the TV and game solely on the pad? Is that supported in all games?

Not supported as far as I know. Some games allow it and some don't.

If they couldn't push an average looking 360 game...well, complaint noted, but I'm not taking their word as the last word. Would explain the slow menu loads though. In any case, I wouldn't recommend people like me (most of GWJ) buy a Wii U expecting it'll negate whatever is next from the other two platform holders. That was my ideal dream, but it's not looking likely. If that's a dealbreaker, so be it.

P.S. The Wii wasn't a 360/PS3 analogue for typical third party games, but that doesn't mean it didn't host some excellent unique ones.

Metro may have been technologically unimpressive on the 360 because they didn't know how to port well as it still remains one of the best looking and video card killing games on the pc.

Yes, video card killing. When a dev who can make the best looking game that doesn't require top of the line hardware insults the CPU, I'll listen. Otherwise...meh.

Yeah, it depends on the game.

I can confirm that Mario, Mass Effect 3, and BLOPS2 support gamepad play. The internet says that AssCreed 3 and Darksiders 2 support it as well.

Skipping forward from page 5 - my wife just picked up our Deluxe this afternoon, and it's updating at the moment.

Got a call this morning from the local GameStop (where we were 1st on the wait list for the Basic, and way back on the Deluxe) that they had a Deluxe for us - but we had to pick it up by 4pm.

My only assumption is that, for whatever reason, people just weren't making the trip to get the system, so they started calling through the wait list. I really doubt they had already gotten another shipment so quickly. Oh well, just means I don't have to stalk around the area Target, Toys R Us, and other big box retailers.

Got Super Mario Brothers and ZombiU, in addition to the pack-in Nintendo Land.

Edits galore: I made a post in the NBA 2k13 community (193 strong!) calling them out and got HELLA MESSAGES. The Wii U is forcing me to be way more social than the 360 ever came close to, for better or worse.

Do you think that's just early adopters being social, and the interest will fade? Or is it something about NBA 2k13 people?

I think sports gamers are unusually chatty (because they have both the real sports and the video games to discuss), but usually flock to either the official forums or operationsports.com.

That said, I think Miiverse will remain active for as long as the system has life. It'll only get more populated as the install base grows. You'll likely see less posts per person, but way more posts by volume.

I think it's just really cool. It's facebook and twitter and a message board for gamers all crammed into one.

They didn't just push more polys at you, they added in newer technologies. My point was to say they are a technologically proficient developer though clearly they lack experience with porting. Look, the guy may be wrong, but forming an opinion about a dev's technical proficiency from a lackluster port isn't the end all, be all of the story.

Clearly people don't know how to best program for the Wii U yet. A number of EA's games have been shown to be underwhelming and less smooth and pretty as on their native consoles. This isn't a revelation as games like Mass Effect have struggled being ported to the PS3, a console that people understand better than the Wii U (well, assuming anyone has unlocked the 'full power' of the Cell processor). Hell, do we even know the actual specs for the machine yet?

Lackluster port? I was talking about the PC version. Isn't that the original?

Yes, but B_E wasn't. I'm saying that using those newer technologies shows their proficiency, but I understand your point is that while they may use them they may not be the best at it or even proficient. We're running in circles a bit. One dev isn't enough to know what's going on under the hood. All I'm saying is that you shouldn't discount him completely.

Aaaand I got one anyways. What is wrong with me?

So we agree!

A PC-centric developer coming out against a console when they haven't had a great record with consoles just seems like it should be taken with a grain of salt. That's what I meant.

This is a place where everyone understands, Desram.

Haven't really checked out Miiverse that much, but it sounds very similar to what Valve was trying to accomplish with the new Community features they rolled out a couple of months ago.

EDIT: Wii U trails the iPad on Neilsen's hot xmas gadget list for this year (Ages 6-12). 48% vs. 39%. Does that settle the "Wii U's marketing sucked" debate? (Probably not.)

So, funny story.

I was driving home from work when I passed by my local Target. I figured I had some time to kill, so I walked in and meandered over to the video game department. As usual, the normal hustle and bustle of pre-holiday shopping was commencing, and the two attendants were helping other people.

Right in front of the area stood an aisle end display with several signs marked "WiiU" on them. Since I hadn't seen any WiiU stuff in person since PAX, I thought I would just go ahead and take a look at the display. I was certain they were sold out and I probably wouldn't get a chance at buying one until March since I specifically want the black deluxe edition.

So I walked over to the display and look down in the glass security case. There were two white basic model WiiUs just sitting there. "Wow," I said out loud. "I'm shocked they still have some." I don't really want the basic model, there's too little built in data storage.

"Can I help you?" One of the attendants asked me as he finished helping his customer.

I smiled and pointed at the WiiUs. "You wouldn't happen to have any of the black models would you?" I ask facetious.

"Sure, I got one in the back." He said smiling to me.

My eyes popped open wide as we stared at each other awkwardly for a few seconds.

"Did... you want to buy it?" He reluctantly asks.

I stared intensely at the attendant. "Yes. Yes, I would."

I watched as he jaunts to the back room. A few seconds later he emerged with the blue tinted box in hand.

Sooooo... I have a WiiU deluxe edition now. I'm still not sure how that happened.

My local Target had 3 new blacks and 2 new whites on the shelves today. Since the black was available, I went ahead and picked one up and stopped off at TRU to take advantage of their sale to pick up ZombieU and NSMB:U. It seems like a rather short turn around for a restock, so I am guessing the "new" units were preorderers that never picked up their units. (i.e. people who preordered at multiple retailers just in case and were then able to successfully pick up one at one of the other stores that launched at midnight instead of 8AM). Alternatively, I could be completely wrong and they actually have already started restocking.

I've been home a few hours and the initial update, the Nintendo Network registration, the Wii-WiiU transfer, the import of my kid's Miis from their 3DSs, and the update of NSMBU are all done. Right now NintendoLand is updating, and then we have around an hour to actually try it out before they need to go to bed.

Like on the other services, my ID is Jasonofindy if anyone wants to friend me up.

The Nintendoland robot's voice made me yearn for Chibi-Robo.

I/Santa had a similar experience today. I wasn’t expecting to get one so soon or at all, but Fred Meyer had the deluxe version in stock and I figured if it's not going to be opened until Christmas Santa can return it if he changes his mind.

So what is the deal with the Pro controller? I got one, but it looks like I can't use it in Mario? I had to take one of my old Wii remotes and sync it, but if I can't use the Pro controller in certain games I guess I will have to buy more old style Wii remotes since I only had two and need to leave one synced to the old Wii.

On the back of the box, middle right side there will be white pictures of whatever controllers are usable.

I was very happy to find that the old non-"+" Wiimotes work in the Ghost Hunter minigame in Nintendoland. I knew they were compatible with the Wii-U for use in old Wii games, but was afraid they would be locked out of the new Wii-U games in order to force us to upgrade. I'm sure that there will be games they'll be locked out of, but this at least shows that Nintendo is likely only doing that in games where that extra motion precision is actually needed. Thanks Nintendo. I'm hoping this means that I can get by owning my 2 original Wiimotes, 1 original with + attachment, and my gold Zelda Wiimote+.

The kids and I had a really good time chasing each other around and trying to trap each other as ghosts. Nintendoland is looking better than it did at first glance when they unveiled it at E3.

PSA: The non-word Eff is not acceptable language in the Miiverse. I've been locked up.

Disclaimer: my handwriting may reach out of the Wii U Gamepad and poke you in the eyes. Sorry.

Was this why jeffgertsmann wasn't an acceptable name either?

I dunno! I assume his was rejected by some kind of automatic censor, mine was moderated a couple hours after I posted.

I wanted to see what was up withe the eShop and bought Nano Assault Neo. Thumbs up so far.

Hi all. Is anybody having issues with Netflix? It was working yesterday but now isn't working right. I get sound out of my tv but no video. I can see the menus with no trouble but once I start watching a video it stops. If I swap the video to the game pad it works fine. I do see the progress indicator get to about 10% before the video cuts out. I am using the packed in had I cable that came with the system and my tv is running at 1080p.

Any help would be greatly I appreciated as this is starting to get annoying! Thanks!

No problem with mine. :/

Is there a list of games that are 100% playable on the gamepad like Mario? A quick google didn't turn up anything.

I went to our local target and didn't find a deluxe. There are two in town. Yesterday, they said the one on the south side had Wii U's in stock but the north side one did not. I checked online after coming home tonight and it says the North side one has them in stock. So it seems that between yesterday and today the north side target got some Wii U's. The south side one had 4 basic ones available.

I watched the demos of it and N seems to be putting less emphasis on the Wiimotes and motion control. Is that the case? It doesn't appeal to me as much if so. One of the things I like is the motion required for some of the games. It is also why I like the Kinect for the kids. Even if they kids have been grounded from TV and consoles they can still play the kinect since I see it as being a form of hidden exercise.

Not that I'm aware of, but it'll come. Maybe check Giant Bomb in a few weeks.

Well, I might up a river with my Wii transfer. As usual, I couldn't get to the store to get the transfer tool, so I copied the tool from the WiiU to my SD card, and tried to load it onto the Wii from that. The Wii froze trying to read the SD card, so I checked and saw that maybe I could accept the Terms and Conditions again and get back to the store. I accepted them, and still couldn't get to the store; so I tried a System Update... It was installing for a long time, and then it went black.

I was on the phone with Nintendo last night, and the guy said that since the power button was responding correctly, it might have just gone to the default RCA connection, and I only have it hooked up on Component cables. So far I can't find my RCA connector, but if that doesn't work, my transfer is screwed since my Wii is likely bricked. I'm very saddened by this, I have less than 50 dollars of VC content on my Wii, so it doesn't make sense to get the Wii fixed, but I don't want to lose all of my saved files.

If you have an RCA cable from any pre-Wii Nintendo system that will work as well. If not, shoot me an inbox message and I can probably toss one in the mail to you.
