That damn poison attack was annoying. Finally found a way around it by using POW's. I liked how it clapped along to the song.

Did you notice that when you originally found

Spoiler:

the sponge (I'm assuming you did, it was in plain sight), you had to hit it several times to knock the poison out of it? That was a clue. If you use it during the boss battle, instead of his poison attack rocking your world, it hits him! And deals 30 damage each turn while making him miss all his attacks!

Really try to think of the boss battles as Zelda battles; there's always a Key Item that helps out a ton.

Spoiler:

Yeah, I used the sponge and it took a good 120 off of the guy but afterwards I got hit by the poison a bunch of times. I probably should have brought several "thing" stickers just for the pure firepower.

It's so satisfying when you get a Royal sticker.

That's been my favorite boss fight so far. I had a Thing sticker that had a special effect on him, but unlike the World 2 boss it didn't feel like it wiped him out for me. There was still plenty of work to do and plenty of tension.

You seem to have posted this thinking you were in the Kid Icarus Uprising thread. Otherwise, good show. Carry on.

Up yours, stupid inferior right-handed world!

The amount of coins you get really picks up in World 4. Also, I'm not sure but I think the amount of coins you get at the end of a level depends on how many battles you won.

I think that's right. Actually, I think it's a combination of several factors, but I think that's the biggest. There seems to be a first-time bonus (if you grab a comet the first time even without beating anyone you'll still pick up ~40 coins, instead of 3 every other time), and I'm not 100% sure but I think how you did in battles helps too, so a lot of excellents and perfects will increase the haul. At any rate, the dominating factor seems to be how many fights you won.

I beat the game yesterday, with 100% museum completion. Had to look up one thing and two battle items; some I stumbled on totally by accident and am amazed I didn't have to look them up, because they were seriously well-hidden.

I discovered something by accident that made the ending bosses pretty trivial. If you're good with the jump command:

Spoiler:

You can buy flashy clone jumps at 4-4 for a mere 60 gold, and you should be swimming in the stuff. These have, anecdotally, a 50-60% chance to turn into flashy infinijumps at any paperization box. I was running through bafflewood, b/c there are 5 easy-to-access boxes in there, and getting ~3 flashy infinijumps each trip. The boot defense card plus flashy infinijump = dead bowser.

Anyway, this game? Awesome. GOTY awesome? Perhaps. Gonna be a tough battle. But seriously, what great devotion to theme. Every item has corrugation edging. If you turn the 3DS the shiny stickers refract correctly. Hell, if you shake the 3DS pretty hard even the life bars (which are suspended from the top of the screen) will shake! Awesome.

My own gaming tendencies are driving me crazy. I'm at the end of world 2 with 4 pages full of shiny stickers. I don't have any bad or normal stickers to dispatch these easy foes, but I don't want to use my shiny stickers because I have to save them for harder enemies to come! I feel regret every time I use a shiny jump on a flying goomba.

By world 4 it's difficult to find stickers that aren't shiny, so don't feel bad about using them. I tried to burn my lower-tier stickers first, but if shiny is all I had I'm not going to get too broken up about it.

Man, I was stuck in the mansion foreverrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Spoiler:

I was convinced that it had to do with the candles in the hallway and then I noticed the loose window The disco boo fight was the best, as well as the boo with 1hp.

The infinijump stickers don't seem to respawn. I've been pretty OCD with the museum collecting but these just seem too good to use on the museum.

Infinijump stickers are an unlimited resource, go ahead and use one in the museum.

Spoiler:

In the shop you open up right after the manor, you can buy flashy clone jumps for 60 coins. If you put a flashy clone jump in one of the "upgrade" boxes, it turns into infinijumps with decent probability.

It's like you don't even care about my spoilers a mere three posts up.

The further in I get, the more I like the game. I was playing NSMB2 not long ago, and lamenting the lack of a Super Mario World like overworld.

I really like that you can run from the bosses. It makes it such that there isn't much of a penalty for starting a fight, then trying to figure out what special sticker you need to solve the puzzle. You may have to leave and come back, but at least I'm not running around with every single big sticker on me.

I'm not gonna spoil myself!

I'm not gonna click a spoiler that says "This helps with the final bosses:" when I'm not to the final bosses yet :p

What? Oh?

Sorry, I hadn't noticed you'd posted in this thread at all.

I know what someone's getting for Christmas!

Spoiler:

It's poop! In a box! COD, even!

Yeah, I figured as much. My own compulsive habits are making accepting that fact easier said than done

Who told you? It was supposed to be a surprise.

I think World 5 has been my favorite so far. The palette of jungle --> river --> volcano was sweet. Another random extra polish thing I noticed is that it takes longer to peel a sticker if you are on ice since Mario has less traction. I'm being so lame with the mega flash stickers since I just put them in the museum instead of using them

Regarding the boss:

Spoiler:

I didn't use any "things" and just kind of brute forced it. Was there a specific thing that would have made it easier?

You're talking about

Spoiler:

Petey Piranha? If so, I don't think there's a specific thing that is best for him (although the beds were handy, as they put him to sleep!). You're just supposed to block his spin attack and then hammer him when he's off-balance do expose his weak underbelly.

Finished the game:

I really enjoyed the item combat system, the jazzy tunes, dialogue, art work and exploring. However, I have to agree with a lot of the reviews that the sort of point & click adventure aspects detracted from the game. Several times I would be enjoying myself and then get stuck because of some obtuse puzzle and I've never been a point & click adventure fan because of stuff like that.

World 5 was the best overall. World 4 had the best music, although the jazz version of the air ship music was pretty sick. I liked all the random things that would happen as you played:

Spoiler:

The singer when you find the goat. The disco shy guys. The giant fish flying off into the sky in the raft level. The long sequence with the background pieces knocking each other over in World 1. All

I regret being a slave to the sticker museum. I wish I tried all the crazy things I found in the blue doors. I think I'll go back and at least use the Mario guitar as I need to see what Monty Python-esque animation plays when you use it.

My credits sequence said I had 5/5 Luigi. Do you get anything for that?

You get Luigi in the credits.

I was disappointed too.

Demyx wrote:

That's it? I should have let Luigi rot in the backgrounds.

Huh - I've seen him a few times but didn't do anything with him.

Also, I have to admit, I did not expect Aguirre Wrath of God in my Paper Mario game.

Can't wait for this to arrive in Europe next week, the real question is if this is going to be able to pull me away from Persona 4 ?

Also it goes without saying, but there are spoilers in that article.

Thanks for posting that. I really enjoyed it.

I hadn't realized just how much input Miyamoto still has on every game they develop. That's interesting.

I don't know how I feel about it. On the one hand I am a huge fan right now of games that have the story told by the world you're in. Less dialogue, etc. A prime example being Dark Souls. But also recently Dishonored did a good job of telling most of the story without laborious cut scenes. So I actually appreciate that aspect of Paper Mario.

On the other hand it's frustrating to think that Nintendo is coming to those conclusions via an alchemy of online polls and Miyamoto's personal opinion. In the end I sold my copy of Paper Mario so I could start over again on a digital copy. I had some points already that I wanted to use and that affords me the ability of not "worrying" that it's in the cartridge slot being ignored. I'll just poke at it here and there over time.

It made me sad to read that only 1% of the people surveyed liked the story in Super Paper Mario, which is maybe my favorite Mario story of all time.
