Oy. Did anyone mention Periphery's latest album? I'm finding it incredibly enjoyable. Surprisingly so.

Much more to it than the Finnish trailer I saw. I wonder what sort of release it's getting. I was hoping it and the album would be released close to each other, or at least the film would be on DVD in time for me to get it for my sister for Christmas.

I love how you don't hear any music from the actual album until a small bit of "Last Ride of the Day" towards the end.

Damn, that's good sh*t!

Wait a minute, there's no female vocalist?! I've heard this song a few times and am amazed by his voice. This is definitely going to be a go-to song when I'm stuck in traffic

Don't you guys find it to be too much Meshuggah-y, without actually being as awesome? I can't hear those guitars without wanting to just fire up Dancers to Discordant System instead.

I like that it's Meshuggah-y, but not Meshuggah.

I'm really looking forward to the movie. The album is a step down from Dark Passion Play, though. Just not as catchy.

My god Revocation is amazing!!!!! Thank you, nice to see some old school Thrash.

Really? I mean, the second half of the album is certainly weak (Arabesque and onward), but the first half is just plain fantastic to me. Yes, even Scaretale in all of its "this is our audition to write a Tim Burton soundtrack" glory. I feel like Dark Passion Play suffered from the band needing to figure out how to write for a singer that did more than Operatic style. In fact, the only song I still regularly listen to from it is Poet and the Pendulum (and The Islander).

Tell all your friends.

Edit: And check out the next band I'm going to post in another day or two. More straight-up thrash than Revocation, but still with a modern sound.

Fedaykin98, I hope someone erects a small shrine to you. Revocation's Chaos of Forms has so many left turns, it leaves me dizzy and hungry for more.

It's truly amazing.

Wow, thanks! Setting a pretty high bar for future recommendations, here!

Edit: Each of their four releases has some absolutely must-have songs. I need to revamp my playlist and then post it.

I realize it was a page ago and people have moved on from it but I just gotta say that Beastwars is actually really freaking good. Love the guitar rhythm they have going in "damn the sky". Haven't listened to the rest of their stuff yet though.

So, last night I went out to see Meshuggah.

I'm still recovering. The Hurt That Finds You First? f*cking... f*ck.

And Colossus?

Yeah... mind blowing expanding condensing blowing up. Again.

Sonata Arctica is touring in the US.

They're evidently doing a show tonight in NYC and only found out because a friend of mine that lives up there is going. I'll be seeing them at a small venue in West Chester, PA this Saturday. Thus far they're the only non-video-gamey band I've seen live (well, them and Yes/Kansas back when I was in middle school), and honestly, they're totally worth it. Such a good show, and they look like they're having fun when they perform.

They only have that one album and a single out, I think. But a new album release is due early next year.

They're playing a show in Joliet, IL (why is Joliet on their international tour?!?!)!!! Unfortunately, I'm going to a wintertime potluck with a bunch of friends and I've committed to baking some pies. Damn you cruel, cruel world!

Personally, I'd say "Sorry, I can do a potluck anytime, but Sonata Arctica maybe comes once every two years".

And this is someone that lives next to a major city. Bands coming by Philly is not uncommon. Out in the middle of America? Less common.

EDIT: BAM!

It was a good concert, but sadly we sat too far back to get into it as much as I wanted. People in the back closer to the bar were pretty much stiffs. Typically I try to avoid being closer to the stage to avoid mosh pits, but after two Sonata Arctica concerts I'm thinking you don't get moshing much at power metal performances. So next time going to be much more part of the crowd, because that's where everyone's throwing the horns, clapping their hands and shouting/singing their lungs out.

Even so, these guys know how to perform, and they always look like they're having a blast.

My only complaint is they didn't do an encore. They ended with "Vodkaaaaa I need some Vodkaaaaa" and such, but me and the entire crowd were shouting "ONE MORE SONG". I figured they were just leading up to a creative way to do the encore, but they never came back out. When roadies started tossing the set list into the crowd before unplugging things it became clear we weren't getting one more.

Just as well. They don't have many songs that close things out as well as Don't Say a Word.

I may be slow on the uptake here, but Christopher Lee has released a couple heavy metal Christmas tracks, which are just a side thing as he evidently released a friggin' heavy metal album.

This might be my most favorite old man ever.

I've come to triple post and try and resuscitate this thread with some of my drunken discoveries of last night. It's frightening how often I go discovering new bands and never buying follow-up albums (okay, that's not true, but it happens often).

So here's a couple of highlights.

Orden Ogan seem like they got some potential to be amazing in the future, but for now make for some good yet typical power metal.

It is amazing me how many female fronted bands there are for heavy metal in Europe, and in particular it is like they are fusing what used to be the style of American pop with heavy metal, resulting in some weird pop metal that is actually entertaining to listen to.

Issa is the one that has some of the more poppy songs, but I'm actually really drawn to because of the over-dub and melodies.

Meanwhile, Domina Noctis has some techy electronic sounds that give it a distinct flavor compared to a lot of bands of this sort. I haven't given their album as much listen yet, but their strength definitely seems to be in the synths and vocalist as the guitars are rather basic (as they often are with these sorts of bands).

Ross the Boss wishes it was still the 80's.

I've now got a huge Amazon Wishlist full of MP3 albums since I got lost listening to new band samples and samples from new albums bands I previously knew of had released. It seems 2012 was the year to release a new album.

I always keep an eye on the thread, even if I don't have much to contribute. Issa's singer sounds a little like Jon Bon Jovi, the music is cool though. Domina Noctis is very cool, even if the song structures are very radio pop.

Best female metal singer I ever heard was a youngster from Leeds based band Blood Sundae. When I worked for a record company in 2004 we flew them out to record an album that seems to never have been released (I left soon after). Sadly she was fired, replaced with a boring growly singer and they changed their name to Severed Heaven.

Recordings can be listened to here, not well produced, but I think you can hear the quality, particularly the songs Soul Departed and Tear of Blue Glass. Funnily enough a few of the photos on that profile are ones I took.

Orden Ogan is amazing! The singer reminds me a lot of Marco from Nightwish (who's voice I LOVE!).

I feel like I spoke too soon on Orden Ogan, as I just sat back, closed my eyes and listened to their album last night. Yeah, these guys are going to be going somewhere in the future. They aren't typical power metal, even if it seems that way on a casual listen.

Marco's greater presence in Imaginaerum is one of the reasons I really dig that album. I feel like he and Anette did some great vocal work on there, and it kept each song sounding varied and tight. I did hear from a friend that he was supposed to be a vocalist in another band, and according to Wikipedia that band is Tarot as well as doing work for a couple other things. I recall hearing Tarot, but I cannot recall specifics. May have to research and see how they are.

Egh. I hate it when bands go all growl. It's just not my taste, and most of the time doesn't work for me in any musical sense. On rare occasion I can get into it, but it has to actually follow the rhythm, and it usually doesn't. Human Fortress started out really soft and clean, but their third album changed vocalists and they growl. They haven't released a new album since, so I have no idea what's happened to them since that direction change.

I should find out where that vocalist went.

What's a real shame is that this Blood Sundae band was all female, as opposed to having just a female vocalist. I feel like there's a big lack of female guitarists and musicians on the whole, and it would be nice to see more bands where a female guitarist or drummer participates, if not an all female band. I wouldn't be surprised if most record companies aren't interested at this point because Kitty wasn't that successful of a band and has faded into obscurity, but you'd think after things like Heart and Joan Jett at the least that there might be more women out there trying to do more than just sing (though according to Wikipedia, there's a Hell of a lot that play bass). Half the time it seems like a mediocre metal band can get a deal as long as they have a pretty marketable female vocalist (as seen with Domina Noctis).

It's a shame that Blood Sundae chose a different direction. Alas.

Anciients have an album coming out in April. Been listening to the two songs they have on Bandcamp and I like what I'm hearing. Definitely hear the Mastodon influence in there, but Anciients is less prog sounding and not a straight clone or anything.

I did not think I'd see the day, but looks like System Of A Down is not only touring, but attending a small festival in Finland in August. I may need to attend. Anybody seen them recently? Still good?

I saw them in 2002 (What? Not recent enough?) on the Pledge of Allegiance tour with Rammstein and Slipknot. 11 years ago they rocked, maybe they still do

I saw Neurosis on Sunday night.

It was badass.

I was also endlessly entertained by the fact that Scott Kelly wore an old worn Bill Romanowski Raiders jersey on stage. Same one as in this video from last month:

Saw them this past summer. It was a 1.5 hour set with a 3 song encore IIRC, leaned mostly on the Mezmerize/Hypnotize catalog and a lot of Steal This Album. I would highly recommend going, it was the highlight of my concert-going experience last year.

Beastwars have a new album coming out next month.

Here is the song "Tower of Skulls" from that album.

Edit: oh yeah, here is a link to the BUY-IT page http://www.bloodbecomesfire.com/

Desolate landscapes? Check

Now I'm no expert but that sure was a metal ass, metal video to me.
