Starcraft II Catch-All

Don't miss the SC2 Multiplayer thread if you decide you want to play against other people. There's been a bunch of new-to-multiplayer people jumping in over the last month or two.

Have bliz said anything concrete about how HotS will be sold/priced? I think I read a few rumours that the expansion would be cheaper, but the internet is full of rumours.

They've said they will treat them as just that - expansions, so they will be cheaper. My bet is on 40$/EURO.

Got the game today.

Heart of the Swarm pre-orders are live. Release 3/12/13 (nice palindrome Blizzard)

Preordered the collectors edition, because I am a blizzard whore.

In Holland for one more day. Cannot pre-order even. If I would, it would be 40 euros ($US51 instead of $US40).
And now I changed my region to what I initially had anyway (North America) and now I can buy it. Dividing it regions really gets my blood boiling.

btw why is it so expensive?

It's considered a standalone game. Not sure how they solve the multiplayer if you don't own Wings of Liberty though. One would hope you get access to all of it, but RTS history (Blizzard and THQ mostly) suggest otherwise.

Edit: Blizzard also has the most boring collector's editions ever. It's literally a making of DVD, a soundtrack CD, a mouse pad and an art book every single time. Occasionally you get a unwieldy USB stick of sorts, but that typically only happens for main games, not expansions. The CE boxes themselves look sweet, but you gotta be Blizzard to charge an extra $30-50 for $2-5 worth of garbage. With WOW classic and TBC they at least had some easter eggs on the DVDs, but they don't even bother with that anymore.

In the case of Diablo III they did the DVD well in advance of release. The easter egg on that one is watching the developers gush about the old rune/skill system that didn't ship with the game

Amazon sent out their beta keys for preorder holders. Check your email if you preordered there!

They said within four days of your order date, when did you put in your preorder?

Because that's what Blizzard had charged for the last 15 years?

Brood War retailed for $40 on release, too.

Yeah, if you consider inflation, if anything games got cheaper

Oh, well I missed that part. I ordered it yesterday once they allowed the collector's edition to be sold again.

Anyone know what the best SC2 tower defense mod would be? Or the best site to read up on all the top rated SC2 mods? Google results are pretty spammy.

I would be interested as well. Also looking where to find information on good comp stomp maps.

Sorry for the necro posting, but I THOGUHT it'd be better than making a new one.

I finally finished SC2 and after watching the ridiculously long Credits roll (literally they almost give thanks to the cleaning lady) I was expecting something extra after them.

I finished the main scenario in normal mode.
Is there anything else hidden after the credits?

I'm not 100% but I don't remember anything extra appearing after the credits. The extra missions are all hidden within the main game.

Thank you so very much.

Game was ok.. but I think Wings of liberty had a better more emotional and stronger ending

Friends,

LOVEd Red Alert back in the day. Thinking of picking up Stacraft 2 now that it's only $20. Anyone care to summarize what iterations this game has made since the hood old days of C&C and whether in 2015 this game holds up? My recollection of the old RTS games was you would drag the mouse over all the units and often just do a massive rush. Did Blizzard figure out a way to more easily mange distinct groupings?

Thanks!

Chad

No.

But the Viking ships transform into mechs!

SC2 has infinite sized command groups.

You also don't need to drag the mouse. You could just double click on a unit and all similar units would be selected for easy grouping. "Drag the mouse over the units and do a rush" was never really how even SC1 was played. It's strategy and counter. If you get rushed by a 6-pool and you don't know what to do, you're dead. If you're 6-pooling, you can't afford not to micro because the workers can overwhelm your cheap units and then you're massively behind. C&C and SC are not the same game, though they're both RTS.

Yeah if you try playing Starcraft the way you would approach C&C you're gonna have a bad time.

Unless you're playing the campaign on easy. Or normal or below AI in skirmishes or something, in which case you can more or less do whatever you want.

Glad to read the responses. I prefer a bit more technique than just the group rush. What is 6-pooling?

Term from Brood War. You started with 6 workers, so people used to just start those mining but not build any more and save until they could put down a spawning pool, then the moment the spawning pool finished you threw out as many zerglings as you could get out and went immediately for the other guy's base. For extra YOLO take your remaining drones too.

Often times people don't scout soon enough and it catches them completely off guard and you just win the game right there. You end up wandering into their base when they only have workers and maybe a half done barracks or gateway or whatever.

On the other hand, if they scout the early pool before it finishes and have any idea how to prepare for it you just lose outright. Risk/reward and all that.

Good article on how Blizzard has the wrong design focus for Legacy of the Void. Couldn't agree more with this guy; I don't know anyone who wants more micro and higher APM demands.

Nice to meet you.
