Random thing you love right now that doesn't deserve its own thread

His teeth scare me the most.

Sitting outside in 3 degree Celsius weather for two hours, trying to draw a condo. Simple, right?

Nope.

A whole bunch of angled overhangs, a really f*cked up roof that I redrew at least 10 times before getting the proportions and angles right, and even more overhangs made the sketching process a nightmare.

Why is this a love? Because I made a hell of a lot of progress. By eye-balling the different parts of the building, and then repeatedly adjusting the surrounding geometry, I learned a valuable lesson about using different parts of a subject as reference. I also forced myself to correct mistakes as soon as I spotted them, because if I made a proportional error with a critical reference point, the whole sketch would be messed up. Training myself to correct mistakes immediately will pay off further down the road.

I also learned the importance of having different types of pencils to work with. There are situations where a 0.9 lead just doesn't work: You need the precision of a 0.5 lead.

You know the thing where you stick your pencil/paintbrush out in front of you to check proportions? INCREDIBLY important.

Finally, after working on a complicated building for two hours, everything else is cake. Those other buildings are just big rectangles with like, 10 other rectangles inside them.

This is my favorite kind of pencil:

Hax!

Double post shenanigans!

Okay just for sh*ts and giggles I decided to see if an old website I used to visit all the time was still around and it is!!!

http://www.kaleidoscope.net/

I was involved in that community in the late 90's through the early 00's and even made one of the last schemes released and had a hand in a few others. Kaleidoscope was one of those things that made being a Mac user in the Windows 95 & 98 era awesome.

IMAGE(http://www.kaleidoscope.net/schemes/screensnapz/occamsrazor.gif) That is the one I made

When I'm drawing, I find it invaluable to turn the subject upside down. Then I'm forced to see everything the way it is, and not start taking shortcuts based on presumptions my brain is making for me.

So just uproot that condo and flip it over.

But then the lighting is all wrong!!!!!!

I don't know if this is the right place for bragging and I wouldn't normally do it, (although I imagine everyone says that) but since this is the first thing I've had to brag about in years I'm going to do it anyways.

And since then my tweet been Favorited 7 times and retweeted 33 times! I know its kind of silly to be this excited over something that took everyone involved less then ten minutes, but its still this the coolest thing to happen to me in weeks!

Don't apologize dude. It's always cool for someone to respond to you or retweet something you've said. I know I love it.

Well in that case maybe I will rent that billboard after all...

Sent out invites to the first LAN party I'm hosting. Took a while to wrangle everything into order, but I've got a big bonus room with lots of power going to it to dedicate to the weekend.

That my entire family just spent a half an hour building custom light sabers.

That I wasn't the instigator of that.

And that my youngest daughter chose a red blade... and knows what that means!

This documentary about Felix Baumgartner is fantastic.

Space dive

Grilling in the cold. Okay, so 50 degrees isn't cold, but it made me look forward to January.

Hearing my daughter exclaim "daddy, bacon makes everything awesome" as I made Sunday Breakfast.

She is only 4.5, but I now know if I get hit by a bus tomorrow, my work here is done.

Mokiki and the Sloppy Swish

I have a new favorite Hair song.

"If it starts pointing toward space you are having a bad problem and you will not go to space today.[sic]"

I lolled.

I miss Australian bacon.

Walking in Wales with the sun low in the sky, a nip in the air and autumn leaves on the trees.

My furnace just went out, right as the cold season is starting up.

Why do I love this?

Saturday, the Nasty family went to Costco. When we were done, we noticed that the Costco was right next to a Home Depot. We have been talking about replacing the ceiling fan for a couple of months and decided to walk over and take a look. Right inside a nice old lady started talking to my daughter and gave her a balloon. We chatted for a second and she asked us if we would like to enter a raffle for a new home furnace. We went ahead and entered and forgot about it.

When we got home, Home Depot called us and informed us that we had won a new home furnace and set up the appointment for tonight to come do the measurements and set up the delivery.

I am going to stop on the way home and get a lottery ticket.

Good news, tuffalobuffalo! You have just won the internet award for best name that consists of two words that rhyme with each other! I'm afraid there's no prize, because this is the internet, but I can assure you that that in no way diminishes this honor.

Woot!

vRad is reading our stuff super fast tonight; the last two scans I sent to them have had results back within 5 minutes. That's insanely quick.

I'm going to put these kittehs on my 50" plasma. Because, you know, it's what you do.
