Hotline Miami

Yup. Got bugs. No music when game starts. If it starts. I hope the devs are on this. Can't play game without the tunes.

Give your PC a reboot and it should be fine.

Thanks for the tip although a recent-recent patch helped my problem.

Game of the Year. I've put 11 hours into Hotline and I still can't get enough. I'm trying to complete levels faster and faster like a jackrabbit hopped up on a meth-speed mix.

I love the jackrabbit technique. I got frustrated trying to strategically pick who I'm going to take out room after room. Finally, i said eff it and went beast mode with the ninja sword. Glad to see they're already adding content!

That technique is the best one so far. Since randomization is such a big part it pays to be just as random. That totally made sense in my head. Not sure if it does here.

Do that, but throw weapons after each kill. Helps with the originality score.

Picked this up after hearing the discussion about it on the podcast.

Has anyone figured out how the scoring system works properly now? My scores are varying from C-A+ even if I do things I assume to be high scoring (mowing all the thugs down at one choke point to get a higher combo).

High combos help, but using the same weapon for 5 kills in a row doesn't. You get much higher base scores if you can play fast and loose enough to grab a new weapon for each kill.

So is this singleplayer only, or co-op?

Single player only.

Guess I'll just have to wait til the Thanksgiving Steam sale.

Some cool art a fan sent to Hotline Miami devs. The mask is Carl and it comes with a drill.

Which mask are you? Me? Carl (see above)

I just made the connection. Hotline Miami reminds me of the early promo pictures for one of my favorite bands of all time: The Sound of Animals Fighting.

I would say this is highly intentional, as the achievement for wearing all the masks at least once is called Sounds of Animals Fighting.

That blows my mind.

Some sweet fan art.

Dogs. I hate dogs in this game. You can't throw weapons at them and they can easily run up and rip your throat out.

Just got this game. Wow is it violent for a bunch of little pixels.
beating to death with fist
smashed guy in the face with crowbar
stomped a guy's head in with my boot
thrown a knife into one guys face
slit the throats of two guys
beat a guy to death with suitcase

And that was just in the first 15 minutes into the first mission. Music is great also.

Spoiler:

There's a mask for that.

This feels more like a puzzle game than an action game. I like it.

Love this game.

The rabbit is the only mask I'll ever use. Walk FASTER? YES.

Punch. Slam. SLAM SLAM SLAM. Stab stab stab stabby stabby stab stab.

Spoiler:

Guns are for jerks!

This game looks awesome. Unfortunately, I seem to have an aversion to buying cheap games on Steam until they're on sale. That might be a good thing in this case though since it's apparently fairly broken.

And, now I'm regretting buying it for $5. I can't run it with Steamworks or it will crash. It wants me to update my controller drivers but the driver updates from Microsoft don't appear to work on Windows 7. And, I don't get any sound.

I has a sad for you.

Man, what a great game. Uh, does anyone understand the story or can point me to a good discussion/dissection of it? Edit: Checking out the cool Gamasutra post. Anything else? Don't think I'm going to go back and collect letters I didn't get so...good spoiler video for that stuff?

Edit2: In response to that Gamasutra article

Spoiler:

I'm not so sure that the main focus of the game is just to spring a "gotcha" on the players i.e. You're playing a video game in which we made you be violent, why were you so violent? What's wrong with you for playing a game? A la Spec Ops apparently, Shadow of the Colossus, Bioshock as is mentioned in the comments of that article. I think it works as a commentary on violence and the disassociation murderers feel (walking out in near silence, unquestioning) without resorting to the meta-interpretation. Not everything is about who we are as people who play games. Sometimes an uzi is just an uzi.

Well you are this guy that goes around killing russians and big bone black men. Then you find a girlfriend that might be man. Then you kill more people and afterward you get pizza, some drinks, and few movies from the rental store. This is where the game falls apart. There are no video rental stores anymore. Everything is online now and what isn't is on DVD. Pretty much ruins the entire game. Oh yeah and every day is Halloween. Pretty much the same story as Mass Effect.

Spoiler:

Oh you.

Emotocons can't be spoilered? You learn something every day.

In my version of the story, I never found a girlfriend. There was just some person that started living on my couch for a while and then left.

Watching a friend play through the game later revealed that I was expected to have killed some big guy on my way out of a building and carried the girl out. When I played the level I was able to just walk out to my car and leave as he chased me, so I didn't really know what was going on with her from that point.

You can also choose to not take the items offered by your friend. Not sure if it affects the game in any significant way.

I totally missed the newspaper clippings in my first playthrough,

That's weird, I didn't think it was possible to bypass story elements in this game.

Spoiler:

Especially the ones where you have to kill people. The biker can choose not to kill people, but the main guy has to kill lots of people to progress.
