Dark Souls Catch-All

Pyromancy question. I have Great Fireball. The in-game description says its the ultimate fireball but it does a pitance of damage compared to the standard fireball. Is this a bug or does it not scale with Pyromancy flame?

Odd, it should do way more. I do not know of any bug associated to this. Are you sure you are hitting dead-on? It is rather short range.

Yes I'm locking on and the damage indication number flashes above the targets head. A standard fireball does over 100 damage and kills any week enemy in one hit. Great fireball does about 67 damage and takes several hits to kill the same enemy.

Huh... I dunno. Eh... I suppose it has a greater area of effect... so maybe since it takes longer to cast (if I recall correctly) your target is possibly moving out of the central AoE by the time it fires, but still taking AoE damage. Just conjecture mind you. I've never heard of anyone having a problem like this so while I wouldn't exactly rule out some crazy bug I'm looking for other possibilities.
I suppose my hypothesis is testable by finding one of those stationary zombies at the entrance to New Londo Ruins and popping him. He won't move or defend so it's a good benchmark.

Good test case idea, big.

I left the Catacombs and tried the Duke's Archive. Big mistake. I made it a couple of floors up then got parried and one hit by crystal warrior inside a narrow hallway. Now I am hollowed with no Humanity.

Well I rang the second bell. Got all the way back to the firelink shrine and gave all my crap to

Spoiler:

a giant serpent.

I now have 50,000+ souls. Now want I want to do is go back down to blight town and spend them all on

Spoiler:

new pyromancy spells.

Question is can I make it back down there without loosing them?

Ok, I know I'm way late to the party, but man this game is AWESOME. Total addiction already.

Jumped right in without reading any advice or suggestions. Only big thing I regret so far was killing the first merchant in the undead burg, cause it sounds like a bow and arrows would be somewhat useful. :/
But the Katana I got is proving to be pretty sweet -- got it up to +4 and one-shotting most of the random enemies I meet. Quit for the night last night after beating the Taurus Demon and getting fried by that dragon on the bridge. Good times.

Got a ring of sacrifice? I would suggest going the back way... fewer enemies total.

Both great suggestions. If you go the back way it's A) a lot easier and B) a lot easier to recover your souls if you do die. I think it's also just faster too.

Good point! I was forgetting all about that ring! It would have sat being unused in my inventory if you hadn't reminded me. By the back way do you mean via water wheel?

Through the Valley of the Drakes/New Londo Ruins.

I thought the valley of the drakes enterence lead to the water wheel.

Yeah, I was just being more specific about the entrance to make sure we were talking about the same thing.

Ah right sorry. I was mixing up the ruins with the fortress.

It's a dark souls weekend on steam in case anyone hasn't already bought one of the greatest games ever made.

Gimpy, you are amazing and an inspiration to gamers everywhere.

Challenge accepted. Pendant wearing Deprived coming right up.

I got the classes mixed up, I had thought deprived were level 1 but it's pyro. So I'm a pendant wearing pyro. I love not being able to be invaded (mostly) but I'm stuck with a dagger and mace, I think. I got my dagger up to +7 though and had a devil of a time with the gargoyles but I'm off to Q now.

How are you off to Q if you didn't take the key as your gift? Aren't you off to Capra?

And heavy - I thought the entire Duke's Archives through the boss there sucked. Catacombs WAY better. Plus, the Catacombs reportedly has

Spoiler:

the Rite of Kindling, which should make all subsequent areas a tad easier.

If I do another playthrough sometime, I will definitely do Catacombs before Duke's. Easier to get soft Humanity in, too - gotten through killing X enemies without dying in any area where the boss is still alive.

Fedaykin98 wrote:

I did capra before the gargoyles so I could upgrade beyond +5 and my pyro but had virtually nothing to lose as it took ten thousand tries. Technically I'm off to gaping dragon and then Q...

So, when I said the last two bosses would probably one shot me. I was right.

The attack that killed me was one of the more damaging attacks, but it is easily avoidable. It's going to be crazy when I have to dodge all of the difficult moves this boss does. My attacks are not going to do very much damage so this fight will probably be very difficult.

Spoiler:

Abyss Demon or Black Dragon?

I went back to the 360 version and I love it. The online component just works so much better than on the PC. All of my summons were successful and I actually saw my first Path of the Dragon summon challenge; something I have yet to see on the PC. The PC version does look gorgeous in 1080p@50fps, but the 360 version just functions a lot better. The controls even felt more sensitive and precise. I had to stay on point in areas I usually breeze right through.

The steam sale is great timing. I got to play this a lot thanks to a friend, but jerk wanted his stuff back
Of course now this means I have to start a new character. I want to try a heavy weapons build, any tips starting out for that, like best class? Not sure if I want to do two handed though, the thought of no shield is terrifying.

I'm not noticing any differences in controls on PC vs PS3. Summoning is a tiny bit worse on PC but it sucked on PS3 too. I'm extremely jealous you can have all summons be successful.

Knight? I don't know what the % block stats are on weapons but I can't imaging they're much good.

I've rung the first bell and had fun going back killing the mini-bosses whom I had to scamper away from first time around - though I'm thinking I probably should've gone with a warrior first time around since with the pyromancer there seems to be a little more complex in terms what stats to focus on.

Starting class actually means very little after the first part of the game, it really just determines what you start with. So unless you're trying to do something crazy like stay level 1 forever...

master0 - sounds like you want a Strength build. Looks like Knight is the most likely starting class, followed by Warrior.

I wouldn't get too worried about the not blocking thing - the really heavy armor in this game mitigates a ton of damage. Many, many builds of all kinds two-hand their weapons against bosses.

Since you likely won't be using magic, you can put a shield in the 2nd slot of your off hand for times you want to block. If you can't one-hand your weapon, you can put a different weapon in the 2nd slot of your main hand.

Edit: And what ibdoomed says is true, but you still want to choose a class with some sort of purpose. If you're thinking heavy armor, the knight is the class that starts that way.

If I ever roll a second character, I'm either going heavy armor with a knight, or a Faith build, and I'm not sure what class I'd prefer to start with there.

So sorcery really gets awesome once you get through early awkward phases.

That part where you have to hold your school books in front of your wand so people don't notice? That's the worst.

I had to keep a copy of The Ugly Duckling with my books to keep my spirits up. Look at me now!

I didn't make it more than halfway through my sorcery playthrough. I just don't find the spellcasting nearly as compelling as the melee combat, so I got a bit bored after a while. I never did get a weapon enchanted with +magic or +enchanted though. I imagine that help quite a bit.
