Ragnarok Odyssey Catch-All

Cyrax, if you are watching this thread I created a room. Name GWJ pass GWJ7

Edit: You left?

I realized that the other day, annoying.

Try again, I accidentally made the room single player after you left.

Making a Vita message kicked me out. I don't see the room now.

Edit: Post another time, and I'll try and be on.

Still don't see it.

Edit: Nope.

Edit2: Come in.

Now?

This is being more difficult than it should be, you try making one.

I'm not sure oUr connections play well together.

I suppose cleric doesn't work well with only two. I tried, but that healing mechanic is very restricting. Let's try again another time.

Sounds good.

I finally beat that @$!# #?+& #&("!!!!!!!

Calling it now: I doubt I'll be getting very into this game. It's not clicking and my game time is ever dwindling for things more important to me.

Tell me why it's not clicking and I'll tell you why you are wrong.

If it still didn't click after the first boss, I'd say he's very well entitled to his opinion given RO doesn't change up much. I just wish we could've smash monsters together, Dave.

I was just pulling his toes (I have a feeling that's not the right expression). Cyrax is right, the formula doesn't seem to be changing up that much. Good thing I like that formula.

It's more of a personal thing than any affliction associated with the game. I've been tightening my gaming time a whole lot, so something has to really pull me in via perfectly executed mechanics or is doing something so different for it to grab my attention. RO so far feels very rote; I have played hundreds of hours of this experience and there's nothing going on to really keep me there. If I wasn't jonesing for some more Vita experiences like the ones I've gotten from Sound Shapes, Rayman: Origins, and more, I wouldn't have ever considered this game because I file it under time sink as opposed to something I should take the time to soak in.

I switched from assassin to sword warrior, just to try it out and I realized the advantage of this game being gear based instead of level based. If you keep equipment that your main cannot equip and put it on your alts, they can jump right in where your main left off, no need to grind.

I actually really like the sword warrior, make stick with her.

Play some Demon's/Dark Souls. It'll hit the spot.

Have you not seen the Dark Souls thread? I've posted all over that.

I guess I don't get this game. I feel like I'm mashing buttons, something I don't do in other action RPGs.

Yeah, I know. Go back for more, you won't get a better fix.

What class are you playing as?

Mage. But I don't think that changes the fact that this game is very button mashy. Just the format of dropping you in an arena with nowhere to hide and nowhere to be strategic about how you approach a situation makes it so. I keep seeing the "Souls" comparisons. I guess if you're going by the game being hard and leveling up not being as important I get that. This game is all about you learning how to play the game well, from what I gather. So I can appreciate that. But I'm not in love with the environments and the corridor nature of it and I'm not in love with mashing buttons.

I don't think this in anything like a Souls game. It's the love child of Monster Hunter and Phantasy Star. Monster Hunter tends to get Souls comparisons.

Anyway, the game can be button mashy, but that won't work as you progress through the game. The strategy here, such as it is, comes more from dashing than actual defense (though the cleric and sword dude can block).

I would suggest at least trying another class as I found the assassin to be much more to my tastes in this game.

I think it compares readily to a Souls game in that the focus is on equipment and learning how your character works, rather than building stats and just throwing out attacks. It also progresses similarly, being a bit more lenient towards just rushing in and attacking in the early stages, but requiring planning, strategy, and knowledge later on. I know that I got the same thrill from beating the Orc King that I did from defeating the Gaping Dragon, so I think there's a lot that's similar.

DS, I'm working through Ch. 2 as a Mage, and the main thing I experimented with that completely changed my approach to combat was watching the stun gauge. You'll notice that the target reticule starts turning red when you hit an enemy, and if it goes completely red you stun the enemy. As the Mage, your regular Triangle attacks cause more stun but lower damage, so you should try opening up with 1-2 regular hits, dodge, then come in for 1-2 more hits and you'll get a stun. This is how I handle large groups, especially at the end of Ch. 1 when you're facing many Orcs it's helpful. Mage combos are long with large recovery time, so you're not going to execute a full combo on a group without getting knocked out of it. I think you'll enjoy Mage more if you slow down, poke a bit, and then open up with your full combo only when you've got a stun.

Another thing to remember is keep your buffs up. The difference between having your attack boost buff and not having it is huge, so make sure your hands are glowing purple.

It's also about learning enemy movements, knowing when to attack and for how long before dodging. Especially with bosses. Kind of like a Souls game.

Unlike a Souls game you're stuck in an open arena. Nowhere to take cover, no ability to sneak up on anyone. I guess my thing is that if I'm going to play a game like this I'd prefer one where I could be more deliberate and less mashy about my combat.

What do you man stuck in an open area? I don't recall taking cover when fighting bosses in a Souls game, except the Tower Knight.

The actual input feels a little like God of War game to be, just a little more tactical.

Well, I'm just at the start, but when you choose the first "extra" quest in RO you end up in a closed off area (with invisible walls) and about 20 enemies. Other than jumping and gliding there is really nowhere to go.

Thinking back to Dark Souls if you fought the Kite Dragon you could shoot arrows from behind walls. You could go down the stairs on the bridge. With the Taurus Demon you could climb the tower and take him on from above.

You can be deliberate about your combat. I don't agree that the combat in RO emphasizes being mashy, quite the opposite in fact. Sure there's no stamina bar that actually prevents you from attacking if you keep spamming Triangle, but you're going to be a LOT more effective if you are deliberate in what attacks you use, when you use them, and when you choose to dodge. Like I said earlier, my standard approach now is 1-2 Triangle attacks, dodge out of the way, then come back in for a full combo. If I don't do that, I'm guaranteed to take a hit, and as a Mage that's generally not a hit I can afford to take.

And there may not be environment objects to hide behind in RO, but you absolutely can sneak up on enemies. I do it all the time, and what you get is a more rapid stun or your attacks will make them stagger.

That said it is definitely faster paced than Souls or MH, and if it isn't working for you then that's too bad. I think there's a lot this game has to offer, but much of it is definitely in the multiplayer.

When I did this, he jumped up on top the tower with me. Just sayin'.

Yeah. I'm not cutting down the game. Just realizing it might not be for me. I can see why people would like it. But I personally can't see how to play it without it being a brawler.

I would try to stick with it until you can change classes. That may be all you need to get more out of it. Especially if you got it digitally.
