'20 arrows in the tail' trick to kill him and get some awesome sword

exploit but I'd prefer to play through in a semi-legit fashion first time round.

That trick does not kill him. All it does is net you the sword... and it is entirely legit in the sense that it was purposely put there as a way for newer players to get an awesome sword early on.

Yes, it's there for a reason.

Well after clearing the depths I've finally hit a brick wall. I cleared out New Londo ruins only to find that

Spoiler:

There is no path forward to follow just a locked gate and a lift that doesn't work.

I worked my way through blight town only to find that

Spoiler:

I can't beat the spider demon. She appears to have some sort of magic attack that one hit kills me.

And I've cleard out as much of the catacombs as I can but the

Spoiler:

Wheel skeltons are too damn fast for me

.

I think I'll take a break.

That's one of the incredible things about this game. What seems like an exploit and probably would be in any other game, the devs thought of and put in there on purpose.

Take the boar for instance. They purposefully put those skulls on that ledge above. They absolutely meant for you to kill him without him being able to attack back. Either with those skulls or just arrows or magic or ... The same with the giant rat, why else would they have that drop down? Why would the dragon's tail be there and not immune and that nice ledge for you to shoot from?

Either A) the devs are complete idiots and that's not bloody likely considering the rest of the game, or B) they did all this 'exploitiveness' by design.

But then they also pulled crap like slime introduction... so...

As a player, thinking outside the box of other rpg's, put aside any thoughts you might have about exploits. Here, it's called tactics. Like the real world, if you were in a fight to the death and on a ledge above someone with a way to kill them and they could not attack back, wouldn't you? Are you having thoughts of that being dishonorable? What if it was a zombie? Vampire? Samus?

Such is the brilliance that is dark souls and has spoiled some of us for all other rpg's.

You missed a fireplace.

There's no trick here, just keep trying.

Same here, it's just tough. Dodge better? Are you at less than 25% load?

I did? Can't think where it might be. I've been and talked to the

Spoiler:

wizzard chap on the roof

and wandered around the building.

I should say so. I'm using the Shadow set.

Get help for the boss you're stuck on. At minimum use the NPC summon. If you get one shot by the boss, let the other people do the work.

strangered - two of the three paths you're attempting are late-game areas:

Spoiler:

Catacombs and New Londo Ruins are for very, very late, and at least NLR can't be finished until you've beaten some other bosses.

My advice:

Spoiler:

The next thing you need to do is finish of the spider witch. If you think you just can't do it right now (I thought she was easy), beat some optional bosses or something and level up your stats and/or gear. Or give it another shot by summoning someone, as SixteenBlue suggests.

I wasn't insinuating anything by saying it was an exploit - its just how I heard it described elsewhere.

I got to the blacksmith so I finally spent my cache of souls so I don't have to worry about dying anymore (almost died to a shield zombie right at my bloodstain)

Perhaps one of the most unexpected thing I've noticed since I've started playing is how I'm enjoying the 'oh sh*t' moment when I wander around a new area and find a silver knight and turn and run for my life, reminds me of how I felt when I was a kid playing games like this.

I'm assuming on Queelag,

Spoiler:

you're getting 1-shot by the explosive orb attack she does around her after a lava spew. The simple strategy for her is to run around like an idiot and bait the lava spew attack. Once she begins that, run to her side or back and smack her a couple of times. Don't linger too long, or you'll get hit by the explosive orb. You really just need to get 2-3 hits in and run away. Be patient. Summon Man-Eater Mildred and another if you can for help. Having others to tank for you here makes the fight a little bit easier, and a lot shorter. This can be a very long solo fight.

How the heck do you keep the bridge drake from doing the move where he hops up into the air and one-shots you? I was wearing Havel's armor and had Inner whatever (the Pyromancy that makes you tougher but slower), and he still killed me - which I assume means that attack cannot be survived, period.

I wanted to beat him just to check that off the list, but after two episodes of that, and several more times where I ran around the bridge and he never showed up, I took my ball and headed to the Catacombs. The Divine Estoc +5 I made months ago is finally useful!

I discovered the one arrow glitch when the game first game out. When that was patched out I then set out to kill it with melee. On NG+ and higher I think it is quite difficult, except the method Dyni posted will probably work every time.

I posted a few months back when I beat it with melee for the first time. What I did was use very late game gear, lure it down, then hack away until it died. Before I was successful I kept getting killed by his jump and flame move. Shields don't matter for this fight from what I can tell, so don't bother to block.

I wasn't blocking. I was two-handing my sword, and once again had Grass Crest on my back for the Sta regen.

Maybe the dragon has a tell that I need to learn that announces an imminent firebomb.

2nd boss of the DLC is down with my lvl 5 Knight!

The fight took a very long time, and the main reason I was able to win is that I fully upgraded my shield to give me just enough stability to withstand one of the bosses most devastating attacks.

I've got two more DLC bosses to go, and both of them will be capable of killing me in one shot.

Man, maybe I just have a bad attitude but I'm kind of pissed about the Pendant being a hoax. I still love (LOVE) this game, but that was a douche move.

Seems to fit perfectly with the spirit of the game to me. The Internet just got trolled. That is both hilarious and awesome.

Have you posted anything about your equipment? Lightning? Raw? Heavy or light armor? I'm very curious.

I was hoping it would unlock more post-game story. Or something. You know. Affect the amazingly brief ending in some way.

I do know, I just don't agree that further exposition would be better than the reality of the situation.

I have not.

Armor: Fang Boar Helm +5, Knight Armor +9, Silver Knight Gauntlets +5, and Elite Knight Leggings +8.
Weapons: Fire Longsword +10, Lightning Spear +5, Tower Kite Shield +15 (72 stability,) and Light Crossbow +11.
Rings: Ring of Favor and Protection because the stamina boost is very important. Havel's Ring for greater mobility while using heavy equipment.

Gimpy, you are amazing and an inspiration to gamers everywhere.

Challenge accepted. Pendant wearing Deprived coming right up.

I finally made some progress.

My Cleric is at level 65 and still using a Divine Claymore and the Sun Bro. Lighting Spear miracles. I escaped The Painted World without finishing the level (I felt trapped), but I was able to get through Anor Londo's Interior and beat S&O with the help of a phantom. I am glad I had help, I do not think I could have beat them alone.

I went ahead and joined the Princess of Sunlight covenant, got the Lordvessel and I am now exploring the Catacombs for the first time. I am a bit lost in there at the moment, but still alive. I avoided the two fog doors I found and I have just been pushing forward. It is a new area, so I am drinking more Estus than usual, but so far I have been able to handle everything I have encountered. Although, I am out of Humanity, so I might be going Hollow soon if I lose a battle or two.

I still have my guy decked out in upgraded Holy Robes and a Chain Mail Helm, but now I have Havel's Leggings and Gauntlets. I could roll better torso and head gear, but I am trying to maintain the Cleric look.

Right now I am just past the Skeletal Blacksmith (crafted a Fire Mace) and moving upward.

Well, after about 1.5 hours of trying I officially hate the Capra Demon.

That is all.

The worst. And you can rarely get any help and even if you do it often doesn't help.

Skeleton Key for the win! I didn't even fight Capra my first go-round until after I'd already cleared Blighttown. It was trivial by then.

I like going in the standard order but I think you just sold me on the key for NG+.

Yeah, I didn't really know what I was doing on my first run but the skeleton key sounded way more useful than the others. Turned out I was right. Opened a door to the Valley of the Drakes, found a sweet-ass sword and shield, good times were had by all.

And of course, after that 1.5 hour head-beat-against-wall session. I wait two hours and go back to it and beat him first try.

That, is Dark Souls.

Yep!

I had a great night of progress in the Catacombs. This is my favorite area in some time. Moved steadily onward the whole time -

Spoiler:

a divine weapon and sorcery

really help.

I found

Spoiler:

two bonfires, and I think I'm at a boss door.

Had a bit of a hitch with the

Spoiler:

wheel-skeletons

- eff those guys, seriously. But I never failed to recover my souls tonight.

Excited to press on!

Well still mooching around blight town not being able to beat the

Spoiler:

giant spider woman

and I wandered into a new

Spoiler:

pyromancer trainer

. This may help.

Pyromancy question. I have Great Fireball. The in-game description says its the ultimate fireball but it does a pitance of damage compared to the standard fireball. Is this a bug or does it not scale with Pyromancy flame?
