XCOM: Enemy Unknown - Strategy Game - Developed by Firaxis

It was quite fun in its own way. Like a new game mode where you have to put yourself into danger just in case it stops the bug.

Edit

And when I'm creating a soldier, I want to see both how much he costs and the total amounts of points left. It's a small thing, but would make life easier. I shouldn't need to come out into the team screen to be told that I'm over budget.

Or you could use a 360 controller. For better or worse, the game really feels better with a controller than mouse and keyboard, and no camera issues.

I might just give that a try.

New DLC race! You heard it here first folks!

I just passed one of my hardest missions on Classic Ironman. I captured a Sectoid Commander and a Bezerker and the worse I got was 4 days in sick bay. Doesn't sound heroic, but far out that was tough. Trying to deliberately whittle an enemy's health down without actually killing them so you can have an easier shot with the stun is an absolute crapshoot of a thing to do. Though that being said, I've shot about 6 of each trying to capture them alive, so now that I finally interrogated them, I'm going in guns blazing.

The game started me out with a 3/4 female squad, so I just ran with it and played the entire game with all-female squads (XX-COM :p), only using one 1 dude on 1 mission other than the first, because I had no money to buy replacements that month. That did make it more of a pain to find PSI-capable soldiers later in the game, .

Are lady soldiers less likely to be psi-capable?

I certainly don't think that is the case, it's just that I had to hire (and fire) more than 10 soldiers for every gifted solder I managed to find (6 gifted solders, out of the ~100 I went through in that period). And that takes a fair amount of button-mashing, due to the unfortunate design of the barracks screen.

Here she is. I'm on XBox so I had to take a picture of my TV; there's not really much to see. Unfortunately, she is unable to move (or end her turn), so I had to quit out.

SHIV's seem to be one of the buggier areas of the game. The only significant bug I ran into was with one (where you build it but the game refuses to recognize it or let you deploy it). I have also read about other people having the same problem as grobstein. Which is a shame because I found the SHIV that did work quite useful.

Haha maybe that's why my game was never that buggy. I never even built one of those. Hell I didn't even bother with a forge til the end of the game, and even then only one or two upgrades just cause I could.

I can't believe they haven't patched any of the PC problems yet.

There has already been one patch (changelog), and they is another in the works (changelog).

That's strange, I don't remember having to download anything for XCOM on steam. Is that 10/11/12 proper nonmenclature or American? (i.e. does it go day/month/year or month/day/year )

The only reason being is that the thread is dated 3 weeks ago which puts it between the 15th and 21st October... but then that would make it at least five days after the patch if it was the 10th of October....

That is awesome! They should definitely mod that in as a research path. Imagine one of your colonels or higher ups gets KIA and you have researched the floater tech and basically Robocop them up to return to the fight!

High-tech driders.

The date is in the American format (M/D/Y).
The patch-notes are also on Steam, but it's always a pain to find anything there, so I just went to the 2K forums instead.
You can find those by via Library -> XCOM ... -> News -> Product updates.

Ah, it may be that we didn't get the patch because it was in the release as we released on the 12th.

I hope my SHIV doesn't start bugging out because I just built my first one and I AM IN LOVE.

Upgraded with alloy chassis, suppressing fire and laser, it is totally fearless to rush into the fog of war while my puny meatbag soldiers cower behind partial cover. Why send humans in to do a robot's job?

I only wish it would squeal "Number Five is ALIVE!" when I issue an order...

The bugs seem to start to appear after you have a SHIV die. Some subsequently built SHIVs will be unusable.

Yeah, the bug didn't happen to me till after I had a SHIV die.

I'm on the last mission on Ironman mode and ran into the doors won't open or let you run through bug (First time I experienced this). I tried quitting and reloading which didn't fix it. Am I screwed?

I was....

Hrm. Can you suicide your whole team?

Trying to decide which ability I like more... Double Tap or In The Zone. I think out of all the abilities to pick, this one is the hardest choice. All the others there is generally a clear winner. This one just seems awesome on both sides.

Also, anyone got the achievement for taking on a UFO with only 1 soldier on Classic difficulty? Tips?

Hypatian wrote:

I tried but when I reached the same spot the same doors were blocked.

I bet having a soldier with mind control would help with this task. Maybe use a mind controlled enemy to spot for an in the zone sniper?

Hmm, that could work. I was originally thinking of a support as they have 3 med kits. Also thinking that it would probably be better to do it prior to the Alien Base.... but then you wouldn't have PSI abilities. The benefit is you would only have mutons, floaters and thin men, which are a lot easier to deal with.

Hypatian wrote:

That's actually not a bad idea. After playing and failing the final mission once I know that if a particular squadmate goes down the mission ends and restarts. I hope I have enough explosives to take him out.

I Colonel'd 2 flavours of Snipers and my thinking went like this:

Double Tap for my Squad Sight sniper. DT requires no movement and this guy normally moves as little as possible so it's a great way for me to maximize those opportunities for reaching out and touching someone far, far away.

... aaand my Snap Shot sniper got In The Zone. Since he's more mobile he's more likely to get into a flanking position or get closer to flying enemies who by default are treated as "uncovered" and are valid targets for In The Zone.

Hmm, good thinking. I've currently set up my only colonel sniper like that now. Tried to get another sniper ranked up but he bough it last night at the hands (or should I say Plasma Rifle) of a Heavy Floater. I wasn't too fussed as his sacrifice allowed me to stun it for Interrogation.

It also occurred to me that I never use explosives.

I lost most of my experienced guys/women. I'm at a loss.

Well, the best way to deal with this is to have a back bench that you've been rotating in. There are a number of upgrades to make this process easier, particularly the Officer's School one that promotes rookies to the first step, so they can immediately be useful rather than automatic cannon fodder.

If you're in the process of recovering, a SHIV may help get through the next couple of missions, with the tradeoff of one less soldier leveling up.

It's important to rotate out a few junior soldiers. They'll help when you have a senior soldier out due to injuries, or when you have a bad mission start and show up right next to a Muton Elite group without sufficient cover. (This just happened to me during my ironman game and I had a colonel bleed out because of it--ouch ouch ouch.)
