Assassin's Creed 3 Catch-All

It can get rough, especially if your notoriety isn't 100% clear. Took me awhile to get in the groove of it, not so bad anymore (well, most of the time).

It doesn't help that guards run slightly faster than you and that they have that extended swipe move that stumbles you.

Yeah, that doesn't help. Thankfully, I've found that they're really terrible shots when climbing. If nothing else, at least a direct hit doesn't knock you out of a climb (at least I don't think it does). However, they have eagle sight it seems when running across rooftops.

While I don't think this is really a spoiler since its a gameplay mission introduced in the previous games, I'll spoiler it out anyways just in case.

Spoiler:

Not sure about the rest of you, but the first time I did one of the optional fort missions, lowered the union jack and raised the American (albeit historically inaccurate) "Betsy Ross" Flag, I felt damn good about myself. Go USA!

OK, yeah, this game takes WAY too long to get going. Maybe there's just too much in it. 7 hours spent showing me how (most) everything works. I only just got my Assassin outfit.

Early impressions:
- I'm getting sick of the sudden white flashes.
- Killed a bear with a hidden blade I didn't actually have.
- Free-running is SO much better. Running through trees works way better than I'd expected.
- The UI is over-polished. It's too simplistic. Sure it's a lot less cluttered, but I feel like I'm missing out on some information I got in AC2. Things like whether or not I'm in position to do an assassination.
- I freaking love being on the Aquila. The feedback I get from everything I do is spectacular.
- In the early game, it wants you to walk a very narrow path but I think they left it so open so as not to discourage people who might wonder where their open world game is. It accomplishes the opposite: we get this big open world but nothing to do in it other than hunt and chase sheets of paper. I'm not sure if the chests I opened as Haytham have any impact on chests I can open as Connor, but as it stands I feel like I lost a few thousand pounds just because I took some time to explore Boston.

That's still there, at least for me. Usually I've got to have a direct line on someone, and be close enough, then my primary weapon slot changes color. Worked just like that last night for an aerial takedown, anyway.

S'truth!

I didn't notice that. I was still looking at the "press X to Jason" cross.

Anyone up for some MP on 360 tonight?

I'll try to get on. Guests in town may prevent gaming.

Grr.

Likewise,

Spoiler:

although I'm frickin' loving Haytham as a character. Connor can just wait his damned turn and like it.

Finished Sequence 3...

Spoiler:

achievement is well named for the reveal before going to Connor.

Of course, now I'm in Sequence 4 and STILL NOT DONE WITH THE TUTORIAL! :'( I'm beginning to wonder if I'll even be a full-fledged assassin by the end of the weekend now. Lots to do this weekend, and while SOME game time will be in there, I doubt there will be a long stretch to get through all of it.

Also, the database entries are MUCH better. Glad they gave the writers more free reign to be as snarky and sarcastic and such as Sean would be while explaining things to people. The entry on the grenadiers was great... reminded me of the entry on Lucretia Borgia and Sean's comment about the parentage of like half her kids.

Heh...yeah.

Spoiler:

I suspected that would be the case from the start. Sadly I had it confirmed early when I read the entry about Connor's mother where it stated something along the lines of "we still don't know why she accepted a Templar into her confidence..." long before the actual reveal. Woops.

Just wait until you get to around 1773. Shaun won't just drop that year's events.

Just happened upon 2 elk with their antlers locked, fighting each other. Eventually, one of them won the battle, and the other ram off.

I know this game has it's issues, but man, does it make up for it in spades.

Tell me you followed it up with an Air Assassination on the winning Elk!

The winning one ended up charging me, and I took it down. I did air assassinate the one that lost, though.

Thoughts on sequence 8

Spoiler:

The foot-chase to start it was rough, Bly after a reload or 2 was I able to get close enough to my target. The jail part was interesting, although shorter than I expected, and I have an even bigger disdain for Charles Lee now. Did like how it wrapped, though. The hooded aspect was a nice effect.

And I just wrapped on sequence 9...

Spoiler:

Joining forces with Hatham was pretty cool, and I still like his character. I like where they look like they're trying to take the Assassin & Templar sides, and have them unite. Only time will tell what's in store - been a fun ride so far.

Hehe.

Spoiler:

If you get far enough on the Homestead storyline, the woodworker guy gets some plans from(presumably) someone in Britain. It contains plans for:

1. Folding Chairs
2. Da Vinci's flying machine.

So he builds the flying machine and gives it to Connor, who then goes and crashes it in the lake. Like what everyone did in AC2 with Ezio.

It's comical how often I run up to a goat jamming on the X button only to remember after 10 or so presses that you can only pet goats, not stab them.

Checked out MP last night. I like that they've made the stun/assassinate tactic more clear straight out saying in a direct confrontation, you will die. However, you do get 100 points and the attacker usually only gets 150 so it's a pretty solid tactic if you far ahead.

Finished 8th, 1st, and then 4th. I'll go back. However, I don't know why anyone plays straight deathmatch.

Just wrapped on the campaign:

Spoiler:

As per previous AC games, I'm still confused as to what to think with the current day storyline.

As for Connor's story, interesting that Achilles named him after his dead son. Not sure what to make of that.

Lee's chase in the last sequence I ended up having to YouTube, the "ship on fire" part kept getting me.

I totally thought Hatham was going to kill Connor there in sequence 11, as he had more than enough time to extend the hidden blade.

Also, I thought maybe Lee had also poisoned the bottle he was drinking when he shared it.

Ran into my share of technical issues, that's for sure. Still a quality title that I feel anyone that enjoyed RDR or any of the previous titles in the series would like.

I'm sure I'll think of more to discuss eventually, once some others have wrapped on it as well.

I think Rebecca needs to patch the animus again. So far I've seen:

- Two overlapping stools at the bar, one with the occupant doing a glitchy spin-dance on the bartop.
- A live deer head emerging from a rock.
- A live wolf constantly snarling, likely because he was embedded in a tree.
- Achilles' cane floating about 50 feet in the air.
- An animus web thingie highlighting nothing a few hundred yards from the cane.

Now that I'm in sequence 7 I'm starting to really enjoy myself. My homestead has grown enough that I can actually make some recipes, but I haven't been able to make any upgrade items yet except for increased convoy capacity, which has low requirements and never seems to get any harder to make. I haven't found anything particularly good to make and sell so I'll just sell pelts instead. That said, I don't really feel like I need the money, even early in the game. I've found two chests with 7,500 pounds each, but so far the best weapons in the shop aren't the most expensive ones. I picked up an iron knife and a French saber, and while I'm sure I'll buy the rest later just for the sake of collecting, I don't really feel compelled to spend any more money on weaponry. All I really have to buy are upgrades for my ship.

Which brings me to another point; I don't feel the same sense of progression that I felt in the AC2 line. I liked upgrading my armor bit by bit, and choosing between buying an upgrade or making an investment. I guess the former doesn't really make sense in colonial America but even with a lack of things to buy, I miss the guaranteed steady income.

I've learned to love poison darts. Love em! Whenever you need to chase something, they usually start out within range of one and that'll end the chase on the spot. On the other hand, I hate snares. I hate that the game demands that I use them when they're totally useless and more often than not get trampled by deer. If I want to kill da wabbit, I will kill da wabbit. I don't need to waste a snare and some bait on them. They're harmless and they're freaking everywhere. I'll usually kill one or two just running from one location to the next, because they get in my way.

Which reminds me of my favorite part of the game so far: running full speed after wildlife, constantly sheathing and unsheathing my wrist blades. They usually get away, but I'm sure the survivors have little fox nightmares about that horrible sound. Snikt... Snikt... Snikt...

I saw that too. Stopped to watch from my tree-top perch. The winner's prize was flying aerial death, and the consolation prize for the loser was also flying aerial death.

Closing my eyes to avoid the spoilers, but I had to come back to post this:

Assassin's Creed III Deluxe Edition - PC Download is available on Amazon. Only problem is it's open to US only. But one key bit of information is this:

Requires Steam Client to activate.

Still no news on steam, but this at least confirms that it is indeed coming to steam.

I'm hoping other retailers start offering this too since I really want it and it sucks that they're limiting it to only US customers.

When you level up you get Abstergo points to buy new abilities with. Erudito points let you do the same thing, but you buy them with money. Not game-breaking or changing in anyway. Frankly, it seems super silly and tacky as an option. It is extremely easy to level up and I already have a surplus of points.

So it's a multiplayer thing?

I just found out I'll be getting this free with my 10 pack of samsung 840 pro's (not sure if I'll get 10 copies so I'll give some away if I do) but I've never played any of them. Would it be worth bothering with 3?

Yeah, you can start with III. The plot contains Kojima-grade nonsense so don't worry about it too much.

2 gameplay questions:

1) Is there any easy way to get out of the "Eagle Points" or whatever they're called, in the trees in the Frontier? Right now it seems like I can spend 5 minutes playing with the controller/camera to climb down the tree, or I can just jump and kill myself and get it over with quickly. There is no pile of hay or anything that I can see to leap-of-faith into.

2) When can you do the "Send your assasin squad" silly "menu" missions. I know how to access them, but I still only have 1 assassin in there and every mission has a 0% chance of success.

1) Yes, the synchronize point *always* has a leaf-pile. I've never climbed back down in AC3, and I think only once did I not jump into a leaf/hay pile.

2) Yeah, it's counter-intuitive, because until you assign them, it will be 0% - I had to make sure I assigned someone and then it'd jump to 77%, or so.
