World of Tanks: Catch All

Big. Time. It used to drive me crazy the way people could "hang" over a ledge and shoot at targets they had no business messing with. Such as Mines or El Halluf. I've always thought it was an ugly exploit.

The only tree I didn't touch is American. But it also seems to be one of the most popular trees. The only problem is M3 Lee. Avoid that tank for a while. It is arguably the worst tank in the game, and you don't want it to turn you off of the game. :)

Are you talking about the M3 Lee that absolutely destroys fools, if it's played like a TD? Also if you haven't played the Americans how did you come to the above conclusion?

I played the Americans strictly for the turreted TD's.

When does the VK3601 get good? I just unlocked it before Borderlands 2 came out and, haven't had much seat time in it. I know back in May when I started it was one of the tanks I feared going against (hence the reason I worked up to it myself).

I love love loved my VK3601. In fact, all of the VKs are pretty awesome to play. Like any tank at tier 5 and above they really start to show whether or not your upgraded or not.

The M3 Lee is a tough SOB if you play it right. Make sure you keep that frontal armor where it is supposed to be and use that gun that fires like a machine gun to pepper those around you. They're a little strange to play since if you're in a city, you can only really take cover from the left to shoot your right placed gun, but those quirks to me were quite loveable.

The VK Tanks, the Jumbo Sherman, E75, Hetzer, GWPanther, PZ38t, and the M18 Hellcat have been, by far, my favorites to play.

Elementary, my dear TigerBill. Since I started paying attention (about the time I started playing T3s), on all my tanks, I have been destroyed by Lee a grand total of ONE time (and that was a lucky kill shot on my ELC AMX). I have destroyed about 80% of them that I encountered in those same games. I don't consider myself all that great. Therefore, I draw a conclusion that either a LARGE majority of Lee players are really bad, or that the tank is a PoS. Since I have a bit more faith in humanity than that, I will stick to the later.

As blacksheep already mentioned, any tank that's "good" is so when upgraded. The way I see it, a fully upgraded tank of a lower tier more or less matches stock tank of the upper tier. Often times the lower tier top gun is a medium upgrade for the next tank up. Pretty much the same holds true for VK3601. Except its next tank up is Tiger. So, in essence, VK3601 is a Tiger jr. Slightly less armour, medium Tiger gun, better speed than Tiger, and smaller profile. Oh, and since its level lower than Tiger it gets better matches.

Its top level gun can easily put a hurt on T29s and even possibly T34/32s (although for those, best track them and run away). You can kill KV5s too, if you're careful and they are not too good.

I'm more hyped about no more getting stuck on stupid geometry where you can't get yourself unstuck. But dropping yourself on other people would be fun too!

I can't wait to jump a T-50 over the dunes in Sand River. It'll be like driving a sand rail!

Sadly, your faith in humanity is misplaced in this case. A vast majority of WoT players are sheeple, running to the slaughter.

Oh wow. I went from super stoked to wanting to abandon the game.

It must be me, or my computer, but 8.0 just about destroyed the game for me. I can't even quantify it. In 10 games I played with different tanks, I scored a grand total of zero kills. The look of everything bothers me tremendously. It's almost like they tried to copy the MWO aesthetic with their new engine. Everything is so bland, overbright, faded, hazy and low rez. This new engine is supposed to help improve the FPS, but all it did was drop my sniper FPS into the crapper.

If I lower the graphical settings, I can't even see enemy tanks, or my aiming reticule. If I crank them up to match what the old engine used to look like, I end up getting--according to their engine, which I really don't trust--20 to 30 fps.

The gun sounds SUCK. The new shake when I fire is vomit inducing. The tanks drive oddly (maybe it's a framerate issue), where as they used to feel weighty and massive, now they feel like cardboard boxes being driven on an oil slick. Not to mention that they look like cardboard boxes.

I think I need to give this thing a few days/weeks to get its sh*t together.

Huh. Only issue I have is on heavily wooded and object-dense maps, frame rate drops dramatically (I'm thinking the Italian map with the village in the middle). Played Himmelsdorf and a few others with no problems.

I like the extra clarity, and the physics is clearly better - I accidentally rammed a wreck and it torqued off noticeably into a new position, which didn't really happen before. I have not had enough experience to say whether the driving is different for me, but I have not had issues so far...

Don't take this the wrong way, but are you sure your system is up for it? The one thing I know about this update is that it added workload to the system. Could be you're just on the low end of the specs and your hardware is screaming...

Well, they claimed that the new engine is supposed to HELP with frame rates for people who had bad frame rates before. But whatever. I'm sporting 5770 that should still qualify as a mid-range card these days. I certainly shouldn't be getting sub 10 fps in a game like WoT with it.

So I switched back to the "old" engine. Although as an incentive for people to switch to the new, they butchered the old engine and took out just about every fancy feature it had. So my water now looks like pools of plastic. The rest of the game looks fine though. Not quite as good as before the patch, but I'm fine with it. I'm back to actually scoring kills.

The physics takes some getting used to. Some of the tanks still feel like cardboard boxes on on oil, but I can get used to it. Some of the changes are quite welcome. Not getting stuck on normal geometry is still one of it. I've seen people get stuck on cliffs, but that's their own problem. I like that there is momentum now. When a big tank rams a small tank, the small tank will actually fly away. This is especially good during starts when small tanks keep getting under big tanks' feet. Now the big tank can just push them aside.

So I played 1 round with an SPG last night and loved it... until I ran out of ammo with 2 enemy tanks left as they were closing in on me and I was facing the complete wrong direction to get out of there. It was great fun to rain fire down on unsuspecting targets, especially when they thought they were clear from view, but hadn't moved for a few seconds.

Of course, we seemed to have a decently coordinated team and 1 other guy was using an SPG (actually the next tier up from mine). We did end up losing since they had 2 tanks left and there was only 1 other on my team, who was already capping, but not far enough ahead to win. In the end we had like 93% capped to their 100%.

Well, hopefully they will keep the old engine around for a while. I know I need to tweak some more to figure out what's choking my system on that one map (and which other maps have a similar effect, I guess.)

After the 8.0 patch the E-100 derp gun firing sound is the coolest thing ever. BOOOOOOOOM! Finally something to like about that tank!

Wow... I don't understand how people play with tanks above T7. Now that they gave me detailed stats, it's even more obvious how much of a cash grab this game is above T7.

So I played a game with my JgPanther last night. I fired 12 shots, penetrated 11, scored 4 kills, got Sniper hero badge, survived the game with 30% hp left--and the grand total for the game: -5,600 credits. Yes, that's MINUS.

Gold and Elite tanks of lower tiers is about it. Personally, I'm of the opinion that T5/6 is the sweet spot for tanks.

I played free up till I was tier 7, after that I've always been premium. It's just too much of a grind to do it free at that level.

And I have all the premium tanks so making credits is easy for me. If your interested in one, the non-tier 8's go on sale regularly (50% off), that's how I got all of mine. A Churchill on discount is a steal and well worth the $, a T-14 or a Matilda are also good credit makers.

I got my Churchill at 50% off a few months back. It's fun.

I don't recall how much my Lowe was, but it was much less than the current going rate.

AnimeJ wrote:

The Lowe is a pretty good moneymaker -- just don't play it like a normal heavy tank and you're usually good.

Just killed someone named "Dimmerswitch".

Which is great news for me since by my calculations i'll be stuck at T6 for the next 2 years.
I stopped playing for a couple months and they did something to the research tree so the KV2 I was playing with now lets my buy another T6 tank...which can also be bought by the KV1

Gold tanks of higher tiers are big money-makers too -- I usually average about 30-50k with my Lowe and Type 59 on maps which I do just ok to well and I've banked over a 100k a couple of times when you get 'that game' where everything goes right and people simply wander into your shells.

If you played more than once every year that rate may increase.

If you played more than once every year that rate may increase.

You wound me sir.
I demand satisfaction.
Is what I would be saying if it wasn't true :).

v8.1 is out. Adding British tank tree. To accommodate it, you get one extra free tank slot.

I just started playing this last night. Does GWJ have any kind of organized presence in the game?

None that I'm aware of. Lacking premium would limit me to making a 2 tank group anyway .

If you'd like, my name is Biacksheep in game... that's Biacksheep, just so you know.. I also know that Drexam is in game as well, though he only usually lurks these forums. We'd be happy to play with you. Very often, if you get two platoons together and you countdown to click start battle, you can often find yourselves in the same battle (sometimes on the same side, sometimes on opposite) as long as your tanks are in similar tiers. Its what our friends do to play together or, at least, against each other.

Awesome. I'll add you tonight when I'm on. I'm Toanstation.

I keep forgetting to mention that I play on the European servers.

My user name is moondrgn, on NA servers. Feel free to add me.

I've got you added Moondragon -- I've also added you Toan. If I'm on tonight, it'll probably be around 10ish CST.

I've got tanks from tiers 2-10, with a hole or two right at the tier 5s for whatever reason, so its not a problem to play with any of ya'll.

Generally our impromptu group uses Skype, but we can roll Ventrilo as well.
