Yes.

Answer: You ask him for it.

Not without incident, pal.

Is space an issue?

On that note, in animation the rule of thumb is usually 12-16Hz as a lower bound for character animation (though plenty of animations have gone even lower).

Similarly, HD resolution is dwarfed by the higher film-production resolutions, measured in widths of thousands of pixels (2K, 4K, and occasionally up to 8K).

Jonman wrote:

Likewise for framerate and perception of flicker - 24 Hz is not a precise threshold below which things are 'flickery' and above which they're not.

It's true. For instance, hardcore PC gamers can't see smooth animation below 60 Hz, or so they loudly insist.

Help me out music dudes: Wat is name of song in Walking Dead season 3 trailer? It's not Kari Kimmel or Wailin Jenny's by the way. It's another song used in a shorter trailer featured on television featuring a male singer.

EDIT: Found it. Last Man Stand by People in Planes is that awesome trailer song for Walking Dead http://t.co/b6Q2DtpD

Ha! They're still around? I remember this song from way back when. It was the only decent song on the album.

Yeah, nothing was ever signed, it was all just through email:

"Hey, wanna write these articles?" they asked.

"Sure!" I said.

"Okay, here's how much we'll pay you and when it's due." they said.

"Alright" I replied, and proceeded to deliver the articles on time.

I think the effort warrants payment. It's not a big company or anything, it's just one or two guys I think, but still, I don't feel like I'm being treated fairly.

[DISCLAIMER - the following does not constitute legal advice]

It's been a while since I studied IP law / contract law, but I presume the principles under Australian law do not deviate too far from other countries around the world (there was an international convention which most countries signed up to, so most developed countries have very similar copyright regimes).

Payment

Your chain of emails should constitute a 'contract' under your domestic laws. Generally, a contract entails one party making an offer to obtain something in exchange for giving something, and the counterparty accepting the terms of that offer. Provided you have discharged your obligations under the agreement (in this case, by delivering the articles at an acceptable quality level and within the timeframe specified), you are legally entitled to be compensated for the agreed amount. The only way they could deny you payment is if it is clear you have breached the terms of the agreement (doesn't sound like it though).

Copyright

Whether you still retain copyright in your works will depend on what you agreed with the publisher.

Generally speaking, in a publication context, the agreement usually requires that an author assigns or transfers their inherent copyright in a literary work to the publisher. This general position can be modified, such that the publisher gains an exclusive or non-exclusive license to publish the works, but does not own the copyright.

If there is no express agreement on who owns the copyright, I think there are pretty strong grounds to say you own the copyright because:

a) Your work was already published on your blog, so you would have the best claim to copyright as your blog entry was published before the magazine was;

b) In the absence of an express agreement, it would be hard to impute an assignment of copyright, particularly if the terms of publishing did not require you to take down your blog (which infers that they have not acquired the copyright and licensed it back to you).

Conclusion

Email them nicely again, noting that you had an agreement for them to use your literary works and that you have complied with the terms of the agreement. If you pursued this legally, you will certainly be out of pocket in terms of legal costs and trust me, even as a lawyer, I think litigation is the method of last resort.

In the interim, I believe you should be entitled to continue maintaining your blog entry. In fact, I think you should continue hosting the entry because it is strong proof that you were the original owner of the article.

Cheers

Thanks for the insight Bfgp.

25Hz is the bus speed of the human nervous system.

If I recall my neuro-psychology classes, it's actually 14Hz. I tried to find some references but Google is overwhelmed by hokey new-age brain wave junk.

@Ghostship

Different animals operate on different time frames. There was a study done a while ago that compared an animal's heart rate to its life span. It also seemed to correlate to how fast an animal is living out its life.

When it comes to books dealing with this, I personally liked Dragon's Egg and its sequel Starquake.

I need a voice actor capable of playing a male, age 30s/40s, for a project I'm working on based on this short story. Unfortunately, I discovered just how expensive hiring a professional voice actor can be. Any thoughts?

Does it matter if he has an English accent?

Huh. I hadn't thought of it, but for the right actor, I could alter the story to be a British submarine.

My rates are very reasonable, and reflect the precisely zero experience I've had

I'm mostly joking. Voice acting has been something I've been intrigued by for a while, but you probably want someone with a greater-than-zero clue what they're doing.

I don't know. I have an idea for a project, but I don't have the slightest clue how to make it happen. It's basically a radio drama that's a record of the logs in the story. But I also know I want to have some sort of video element to it (simulating the idea that the viewer is watching these audio logs get accessed on a computer database), and that I have no idea how to do.

Okay, Thursday is my gaming evening since the wife doesn't get home until later tonight. WHAT GAME TO I PLAY?!

Choices:

1. Assassin's Creed III
2. Tales of Graces f
3. Dark Souls
4. XCOM
5. Other

The correct answer is, of course, Sparkle Ponies.

....I have played my fill of Sparkle Ponies. Not to Q-Stone level of full, but full enough.

Check out your local community theatre groups. An old time radio drama, including various sound effects, might be a fun project that they might consider doing gratis just for the experience and/or publicity.

Well, that's a given

What ended up actually happening, you ask? None of those games--too many chores to do around the house

You can turn a story into a submarine? You must be an author!

How educated are sheriffs?

They're mostly elected, so I think it varies wildly.

1Dgaf wrote:

Do you mean the sheriff him/herself or deputies as well?

The sheriff. I was asked how educated they were. I assume there's a minimum requirement to be a policy officer. High school perhaps?

Whenever I see the word sheriff, I immediately think of this guy:

So, if I were to answer your question, the answer would be "not very".

Each county/state has their own standards and policies. Where is the sheriff you're talking about?
