NFL 2012 Week 9 Thread

Pages

Sorry, no time for thoughts this week. It was, uhmm... Hurricane Sandy's fault. It totally hit bad right here... in Texas...

Pick 'Ems:
Panthers at Redskins: Cam Newton's attitude has been quite the topic of conversation lately. DeAngelo Williams and Steve Smith have both been subject of trade deadline rumors. The GM is long gone. And yet, they put up a fight last week against the Bears. Now they host a Redskins team that couldn't get going against the Steelers last week. It was a low point for one of the most prolific scoring offenses in the league. Their only problem is that their defense is even more prolific at giving up points - only the Titans are worse. Honestly, it's fun to watch RG3 try and outrun the points his defense gives up. Redskins

Bears at Titans: When a team gives up 257 points in 8 games, that goes beyond being a bad defense. That's just embarrassing. That is where the Titans find themselves, though their average was actually improved by yielding only 19 points last week to the Colts. I really picked this game just so I could say something about the Titans defense sucking. Bears.

Buccaneers at Raiders: Two teams whose QBs have come alive a bit these past few weeks. Josh Freeman in particular has found a spark, riding 3 straight games of 3 passing TDs. Tampa's defense, Drew Brees aside, has been fairly stingy with the points allowed. There's a distinct possibility that they're a better team than they've consistently showed. Oakland, meanwhile, is still in the AFC West hunt. While Carson Palmer isn't great, he's got more gas left than I expected. The real puzzle is Darren McFadden, who has looked hapless at times, and has ground out some yards on sheer volume of carries. Oakland's the narrow favorite at home, but I'm picking the Buccaneers.

Steelers at Giants: Few teams are playing as well as the Giants right now. Pittsburgh hopes to slow them down with a defense that has still remained formidable with Troy Polamalu on the sidelines. Pittsburgh has struggled on the road this year, though. It's hard to pick against the Giants here, but the Pittsburgh defense is always a threat to change a game.

And the bonus game:
Lions at Jaguars: The league's worst offense showed some life last week, as Blaine Gabbert had a solid game, connecting primarily with Cecil Shorts. Shorts has been rewarded by being named the team's starting "X" receiver, a spot he was previously holding temporarily while Laurent Robinson was out. While the Jag passing game is just barely starting to flicker some life, the Lions passing game is trying to rediscover their flamethrower. The team traded for Jacksonville's Mike Thomas this week, to help fill in for the injured Nate Burleson. Imma have to homer this pick, just hoping that this isn't the week Megatron comes back online. Jaguars

I think the Steelers are better without Polamalu.

Panthers at Redskins
Bears at Titans
Buccaneers at Raiders
Steelers at Giants
Lions at Jaguars

Panthers at Redskins - I hope I get to watch this game as I think RG3 could go off.
Bears at Titans - The 2nd best team in the NFC right now is the Bears, they're like the 49ers but with a better QB and WR.
Buccaneers at Raiders - Josh Freeman is starting to show that something special he used to show.
Steelers at Giants - Giants don't seem to be putting away teams but they do end up winning them.
Lions at Jaguars - Time for Megatron to light it up.

Panthers at Redskins: Between the "Smith and Williams being traded" stories this week and Cam Newton probably wanting to overdo things and out-RGIII RGIII, I go Redskins. Also, I'm pretty sure Carolina has been reduced to grabbing large-sized random beer vendors in order to find linebackers who have two operating knees at this point.

Bears at Titans: I don't think either of these teams is as good as their records, but the Titans looked like one of the worst teams a few weeks ago, and it seems a short trip back there again. I don't think anybody's really bought into CJ.002K as being a force again.

Buccaneers at Raiders: I'm really, really tempted to go Raiders here due to the fact that the loss of Carl Nicks means God hates Tampa and me personally, plus I'm still not sure if Eric Wright is playing or not before the weekly "dumbass Buccaneer gets suspended for Adderrall" penalties kick in, but Tampa's lost four games this year by a combined 22 points, and their pass rush actually existed the other night. Plus, homerism.

Steelers at Giants: If the Steelers know what's good for them, they won't go into the 4th quarter with a lead . . . that's just what Eli wants.

Lions at Jaguars: Because Mike Thomas . . . wait, somebody actually traded for Mike Thomas? I mean, like with a draft pick, and not a crate of toilet paper or something? Really?

Woo! Back over .500! If I get a couple more of these 5-0 weeks, I will actually look smrt.

Just an odd gut feeling that the Jaguars find a way to win this week, I think the Lions are the better team, though.

Ugh. Lost some spots last week, after being right there, a game behind. Stupid Eagles. That's what I get for doing "research" and listening to bye week stats nonsense.

Screw it, gut picks for this week:

Bears at Titans
Buccaneers at Raiders
Steelers at Giants

Lions at Jaguars

I actually think the Redskins have a good shot at losing, they suck at home, especially against teams that are 'turrible', but you know, Redskins homer and all so I have to pick them.

Also, hooray for being almost back at .500 after not starting until week 4.

2 weeks ago, I was 13-15 in pick 'em. Now I'm 23-15, that's what going 10-0 will do for you. Let's see if I can three-peat.

I'm just going to go ahead and bow out of the Pick'Em from here on out. I love doing it, but I have enough going on without watching for this thread to pop up each week. Kick those Oddsmakers asses!

Aqib Talib has been traded to the Patriots for an undisclosed draft pick. Head case, yes, but a talented head case, and the best cover corner Tampa has had since Ronde Barber actually had foot speed. I could be more enthused, to put it mildly.

Edit: Just saw the terms, a 2013 7th and a 2014 4th. I'm going to assume he's going to be a stud for the Patriots, because Belichick always seems to win every trade.

Edit edit: Oops, it's Talib plus a 2013 7th, and they get back a 2013 4th.

What's up with this season and the easy picks? Was there this many 5-0 and 4-1 weeks from folks last year?

And it seems a ton of us all have the same picks for this week. Is it the season, or are the games we are selecting easier this year?

By and large I pick the games with the narrowest point spreads, the games that should be the closest calls, with the exception of game #5 being the die roll wild card.

Bears
Raiders
Giants

And this is the first year with Thurs games every week. Short/long weeks are probably affecting things.
