I Just Got a PS2, Recommend Me Games!

I recommend playing Onimusha, and specifically the first Onimusha, if you can. The controls aren't very good. I'm pretty sure that they are the same controls as the early Resident Evil games, but I beat that game so many times it was ridiculous.

I want to echo that Ring of Red is a really cool and interesting SRPG. The fights in Ring of Red can take a long time. Front Mission 4 is also pretty awesome.

A lot of the other games I can recommend have already been stated.

I don't think anyone has mentioned it, but the Zone of the Enders collection will be released sometime in November I think for the PS3.

Didn't ReZ come out for PS2 as well? If you don't have it for Dreamcast or ReZHD on 360, and tons of money burning a hole in your pocket, you might want to hunt that down. Buying a 360 and the game might be cheaper, though. Haven't checked in years.

Beat that game on the XBox a year ago. The controls are indeed a chore, but it's not bad overall.

Whenever I see this thread, I'm just going to keep on recommending Culdecpt.

YESSSSSSS!! This is the game I originally wanted the PS2 for

I was almost moved to tears from the joy at playing EoD last night. I'd not played it in years, and have wanted to get back into it for so long now, that actually loading it up was such a moment of sheer...happiness. It still plays as wonderfully as ever, and I can't wait to play more, with friends and without.

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne is a devilish treat, but you have to really be into JRPGs to like it (it's hard as sin.) The game takes place in a freshly-apocalypsed Tokyo and your job is to recreate the world. Like most Shin Megami Tensei games you have to recruit enemies to form your party and fuse them to create better party members. The overt religious themes will either be incredibly refreshing or a turn-off.

The game was rather hard to find and expensive on the used market until the publisher gave it another print run a couple years ago.

Edit: Gamespot made a good video explanation of it.

I'll also second Gimpy_Butzke's Front Mission 4 recommendation.

I have, I think, Front Mission 3 for the PSN, which I like a lot. Is FM4 a significant improvement?

I didn't play nearly as much FM3 as much as 4 so it's hard to remember, but I seem to recall 3 not having the linked attacks that 4 does. If teammates are close by in 4, they'll join in with an attack. It would be super cool if you were the one attacking, but super uncool if you were being attacked.

Other than linked attacks and the obvious cosmetic improvements I can't recall what else is different. I'll have to poke around the internet a bit to remind myself.

Edit: 4 also allows wanzers to fire more than once during an attack, if they have the Action Points for it. Also, there are bazookas in 4. So it looks like it's not revolutionarily different but has a few differences.

Cool beans, I love mecha games, so this is right up my alley!

Then maybe you should also check out Armored Core 2 and Armored Core 2 Silent Line. Again most people hate the controls, but I absolutely loved those games. It is a mission based game and honestly you have to love making giant robots because the missions aren't very interesting.

Cool, thanks! Also, it looks like there are four AC games for the PS2, why only those two?

I really wish 5 came out in English

Really it's just because I liked those the most. A lot of people like AC3, I do too, but I like the other two more.

I think the other one was Last Raven. I tried to play it but was quickly frustrated by a mechanic that seemed poorly balanced.

Nice info, thanks guys!

That and you can no longer disable a Wanzer allowing you to kill the pilot, then salvage the parts. This made the game very different for me, as I relied on that mechanic in FM3. That said, if you liked the tactical mech combat in FM3 you'll still love it in FM4.

Awesome! Thanks guys, keep 'em coming. I've started a whole new amazon wish list just to keep track of all the awesome recommendations.

Sorry to take this a bit off topic but has anyone played Front Mission 5? I'm pretty sure it was the last of the SRPG Front Mission games and I am still bummed that it wasn't localized for the US.

I know it got fan patched. http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/frontmission/frontmission4.htm Here is a link to Hardcore Gaming 101's article.

How do you patch a PS2 game?

Another vote for:

Final Fantasy X
Metal Gear Solid (2 was my favorite)
Ico/Shadow of the Colossus
Beyond Good and Evil
Katamari

EDIT: Quoted the wrong person

Generally you don't, you'd have to patch a rom of the PS2 game. (I think, I'm not really an expert in the field)

Wow, that site sings high praise for Front Mission 5. I'm not sure how I feel about delving into roms and emulation, but it's tempting. The website said FM5 used the same engine as Final Fantasy XI; that game looked excellent so I imagine FM5 did as well.

Hey guys, I keep reading about this Zone of the Enders re-release, so I looked into the games and they look pretty cool! I love mecha games, so I'm tempted to get the originals since they're so cheap. What do y'all think?

I loved Zone of Enders 2. The gameplay is fast-paced and exciting. What I loved about it is that the gameplay came down to this: you are a robot picking up smaller robots to hit other robots (you could shoot missiles too, but this was obviously the best.)

That sounds cool! Not as keen on the first one though? The reviews for the second seem way better than for the first.

I only played the first one to completion. I plan on getting the re-release because I don't want to hook up my PS2 and buy more stuff on Amazon. Come to think of it my PS2 may be damaged. I think someone posted earlier that they only get black and white when using component cables. That may have happened to me just before I got my PS3.

My PS2 ended up only outputting black and white regardless of which cable type I used, and I tried them all. Thankfully I found my launch edition PS3 in a dusty corner last weekend, so I can think about returning to some of my old favorites I still have sitting around. It feels like it's about time for me to spend another 30 minutes blasting things with my flying lump of gummi lasers and grinding rare drops in the final areas of Kingdom Hearts in the interest of someday forging that ultimate weapon. Once every couple of years is usually what it takes.

I haven't played the first, actually. I looked at the reviews and noticed that they were a lot more positive for the second, so I went with that one.

Huh, did you feel you missed on any of the story by skipping the first?

I played the first just a few years ago and it was a lot of fun. It's a very quick game, so you're not looking at a huge investment of time. Given how few good mech games come around, I'd definitely recommend playing it if you're a fan of the genre.
