Movember 2012

Hi all, it's coming up to that time of year again and I thought I'd get us started with the Movember 2012 catch all.

The idea for Movember was sparked in 2003 over a few beers in Melbourne, Australia. The plan was simple – to bring the moustache back as a bit of a joke and do something for men’s health. No money was raised in 2003, but the guys behind the Mo realized the potential a moustache had in generating conversations about men’s health. Inspired by the women around them and all they had done for breast cancer, the Mo Bros set themselves on a course to create a global men’s health movement.

In 2004 the campaign evolved and focused on raising awareness and funds for the number one cancer affecting men – prostate cancer. 432 Mo Bros joined the movement that year, raising $55,000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia - representing the single largest donation they had ever received.

The Movember moustache has continued to grow year after year, expanding to the US, UK, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, Spain, South Africa, the Netherlands and Finland.

This year the funds raised in Australia support equally the two biggest health issues men face – prostate cancer and male mental health. The funds raised are directed to programs run directly by Movember and our men’s health partners, the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and beyondblue: the national depression initiative.

Here in Canada funds are going to Penis Enlargement for the less fortunate.
That and prostate cancer and mental illness.

Help out a bro!
I joined my work's network but it's all for the cause!

I did my duty last year and raised £300 or so, but didn't love it so much that I rushed out and signed up this year.

I sent an email around work seeing if anyone else wants to participate, so I'm clearly considering doing it again this year, but haven't made up my mind.

I did it last year and raised a fair bit too. I don't think I can do it again this year. The memory of the stache still haunts me. I just don't know!!!

Of course it took Aussies to come up with something so amazing

And my personal plug for anyone wishing to throw sheckles towards the cause

I'm sure there will be a Goodjer from your local area posting here soon enough for you to sponsor as well.

It's a big blow for me to do it this year as I must sacrifice my glorious Manly beard of Manliness so I can grow a dodgy 'stache

My boss hasn't shaved his goatee in 10 years. He's doing it so no excuse!

So when he started growing it, it was only moderately out of fashion?

I'm on the fence. Somehow this year it seems like more work.

I've started to Shave down to my starting state for Movember.

This is mid shave with a view to the final look I am aiming for as a purveyor of a fine moustache.

"Next the ears, Uncle Chop-chop"

Sorry for the cultural exclusion everyone else. It's an Aussie thing.

Everyone should know about Marcus Brendan "Chopper" Read

I'm in. My work has embraced the mo enthusiastically...lots of mo sistas too. Time to pick out a style!

How does that work? Muffstache?

We have the weirdest cultural icons.

Convict stock, through and through.

Never got the Chopper worship. The man's a murderous sociopath.

Speaking of murderous sociopaths, that's exactly what I look like when I grow a tache. Plus I live in a fairly hipster-infested area so every white man in a 3km radius wears one anyway.

This month I'm raising money for mental health via the slightly more traditional route of running in circles.

That truly is a fine moustache.

I'm doing it this year, and I think I'm starting fully clean-shaven. As in, head too. If I can convince my wife, I may try to grow a second moustache on the back of my head.

My starting image...

We all should update this thread with our progress.

Day 1: Clean shaven.

If that's 'denied', go the mo-hawk as an accompaniment. Let it grow back in, MrT style.

Geez Prozac, you almost look respectable in that photo.

Actually, there's some serious Justin McElroy look alike going on there.

Who knew there was a human being hiding under it all?

A colleague at work told me about this yesterday and I've also signed up for it. Profile is here for anyone interested

None openly sported so far. Lots of painted nails, finger moustaches and supportive t-shirts though. The whole campaign is very open about the fact that one way to get some men to take more care of their health is via women persuading us to do so. (Insert requisite generalization disclaimer here.)

That's just his second disguise. The real Prozac won't be found until several layers in. His true form is that of a tiny pineapple, working the giant mechanical puppet we all see before us.

Then again who am I to deny getting behind such a noble cause and giving it my all?

Do we have a GWJ group set up this year?

I don't think you're supposed to shave your head, Chumpy....

Sure, if you're not committed...

Bah, if you were really committed--those eyebrows would go, too
