Disney Buys LucasFilm, Star Wars Episode 7 in 2015

I think it is perfectly OK to recast the characters.

They could just have the actors as they are now and use uncanny valley renders like they did with Jeff Bridges in Tron Evolution.

In any case, Mark Hamill has to be PSYCHED that he might be called in for some Kenobi-style old-man Luke action.

As far as I can recall Mark Hamill pretty much hates dealing with Star Wars in any way and had to be bullied by his kids to make the cameo on Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. He doesn't even do the voice work for Luke Skywalker in the old Lucasarts games even though he does a ton of VO work.

So I'm pretty sure Mark Hamill isn't psyched at all. If anything I'd expect him to be dreading the nagging phone calls from CNN et al regarding the purchase.

Didn't he famously take the check rather than take a cut of the profits from the original film? Got to leave you somewhat bitter and not interested. That and no one ever shutting up about it. I also recall that Alec Guiness also came to hate talking about Star Wars as that's all anyone wanted to talk to him about after he made the film, rather than his pretty amazing 40 odd year career before hand.

I'll be there with you. Don't care how big they are, we'll burn the f*ckers down.

Star Wars is dead. Long live Star Wars.

I just take everything on its own merits. I watched the special edition of ep 4 in theaters and I jumped off that train immediately. I can't say I remember noticing Greedo shooting first in the new one, and the significance only hit me later when I looked upon Han's character arc, but when the Death Star blew up and they added that concentric ring to the explosion, that became the worst movie moment of my life.

Well in his case it made sense. He didn't' get the Sir before his name from playing Obi Wan.

Hey, something would finally usurp the Christmas special!

Most likely, we will see somthing like this.

I think this is great news. I trust Disney far more than Lucas to make a good Star Wars movie. Here's hoping we see Thrawn or Revan or Mara Jade or any of the other expanded universe characters.

OR, it could be The Adventures of Jar Jar and his Ewok friends.

Nathan Fillion can finally change the name of Serenity to the Falcon.

Throw me on the Thrawn boat. would love to see this happen.

Not sure who I would cast in the other roles, but Mara Jade should be

The shocking part of this is not a direct-to-DVD spin-off aspect. It's that Lasseter--one of the minds behind the original Pixar movies--sold out for untold billions and is now happily making direct-to-DVD content.

As I understand it, Lasseter really really loves the Cars universe. I can see him saying "I love this more than most people do, so I'm perfectly happy to keep playing in this world even though I recognize that it's only got a direct-to-video-sized audience."

As for Star Wars, I've long maintained that we'd get more (and likely better) movies once the reins passed from Lucas to somebody who grew up with the originals. I'm pleasantly surprised that Lucas didn't have to die for this to happen.

I've been interested to see what another trilogy would look like. I never really considered the first three to be high cinema anyway. The second trilogy was gorgeous to look at, at least. I'm biased in this regard.

I'll probably end up at the theater.

The fun thing is that I've been watching them with my kids. And Rifftrax. It was the first time I've seen episodes 2 or 3 since they were new in the theater.

Why the Hell does everyone hate Cars so damn much?

In response to the LucasArts talk, I actually realized as well that Disney hasn't been top notch on the Interactive front. However, if they decided to dissolve LucasArts and sell the various IP to other companies, I think that means you might actually get to see other IP again. You may get another Full Throttle or Day of the Tentacle (even if they're not adventure games which would piss people off anyway but I say who gives a sh*t). I'd love to see more non-Star Wars games again, and once upon a time LucasArts had them.

I dunno why everyone is so worried about the future of Star Wars, though. I grew up with and love the originals as well, but at this point I just can't hold it up to the Golden Standard everyone else seems to do. The original trilogy exists, it is still good even with all the special edition bullsh*t tossed in, and nothing will change that.

Then again, I've also long since gotten over the fact that they haven't made a good Final Fantasy since 7 (controversial statement), so maybe I'm just used to burying old flames.

I guess this could maybe be good news. Possibly.

The problem for me is that Lucas has pretty much already ruined this franchise. I - III were so bad that they actually made me view IV - VI with a more critical eye as well, and now I just lump this entire franchise into one big "meh."

It's difficult to imagine that Disney of all things could change my mind. I expect the last 3 (who am I kidding - next three) movies to be true to Lucas's vision of extracting maximum revenue from a lucrative IP.

It's a soulless vehicle to sell merchandise, especially the sequel.

We have a Pixar thread if you want to discuss it.

Wait, this means all the Star Wars stuff will start appearing at Disney Parks now. And on their cruise ships (which I can't recommend enough).

Yeah you recommended it three times.

So wait, does this mean we'll see Star Wars stuff on Disney cruises?

I mean, seriously, give the cast another crack at the prequels.

Via Google Plus:

So, Disney bought Lucasfilm for $4.05 Billion (That's more money than I make in a week ) and they say Star Wars: Episode VII is coming.

Who would direct? Oh, I don't know, maybe the one who directed one of Disney's highest grossing films recently, The Avengers? Joss Whedon has a license to print money and he's spending his credits on some Marvel properties.

He can handle ensemble casts and knows how to do space stories... If Joss were to direct these movies, he always tends to bring along some familiar faces. Harrison Ford was 41 years old at the end of the original Star Wars trilogy. Guess who else is 41 right now, perfect for the role, and already has ins to Mr. Whedon.

Wait for it.

That's right.

Nathan Fillion.

If they get Joss Whedon to write and direct Episode 7 they can pretty much have all my moneys

Remake Episodes 1-3, Disney. Yeah, yeah, it'll tick George off... but you know you want to, and the masses will love you for it.

Then Nathan will finally have the money to self-finance Firefly Season 2!

...please.

I dunno, for soulless vehicles both movies were certainly better than, say, Shrek 3 and 4, yet nobody seems to have the same hatred for that.

Mighty Max was also a half-hour commercial designed to sell toys, but I still say it was one of the best cartoons to ever grace American animation.

If that's the level of soulless merchandising I can expect from Disney owning Star Wars then I fully welcome it.

What the heck I don't even...

Clone wars post!

Yeah, sorry about that triple post. So in addition to the obvious and mandatory Harrison Ford to Nathon Fillion recasting, any others you would like to see if they go with the Thrawn storyline?

I'd rather see Nathan Fillion in a new sci-fi show (Whedon optional). That said, whatever these films look like is going to be...interesting.

Olivia Wilde as Mara Jade, maybe?

Benedict Cumberbatch as Thrawn?

I'd say Liam Neeson would be perfect for Joruus, but that probably won't fly.
