Disney Buys LucasFilm, Star Wars Episode 7 in 2015

This is the first Star Wars news in years that actually gives me hope for the franchise.

A new hope you might say.

I kind of thought of this as more of the Disney empire strikes back at a competitor for children's parents money.

And yeah, I would be like, oh noooo... but after the Avengers... wait and see. If they treat this franchise with the kind of respect that they did Marvel's stuff... should be interesting.

I'm not sure there is anything Disney could do that would be worse than what Lucas has done already.

I really don't want Lucas to make another Star Wars movie. Then again, I really don't want anybody to make one at this point.

I'd also like to add a vote for the Thrawn series - so many great possibilities. Heck, like others suggested, make it animated along the lines of the Clone Wars series and you've got a great start!

I put my commentary on this straight into the Loathe thread. Since then, a couple bright patches have emerged, but for the most part I'm worried. You guys think Apple has a closed system, I don't know if you know just how much of our collective media The House of Mouse actually runs.

ClockworkHouse wrote:

Did they specifically say that "Episode 7" would be released or just "another Star Wars movie"? They have plenty of room to make movies before, between, and around the established six episodes.

It specifically says Star Wars Episode 7 in the press release.

ESPN Pod Racing.

Of course, as I look at the number of direct to DVD releases that Disney has done of their properties, most of them of...questionable...quality, is one of the potential downsides to this.

I'm actually really, really excited about this... I think this could go the way of the new Marvel movies.

I felt a great disturbance in the Internet, as if millions of jaws suddenly hit the floor in stupor and were suddenly silent. I fear something terrible has happened.

They're still there. I rode the Spiderman one like 3 times and bought an awesome plush Captain American when my wife and I went there on our honeymoon two weeks ago. There was a guy in a Cap costume that looked an awful lot like the one from the movies too, actually. Sadly, he ran away before I could get a picture with him. :'(

Sure Disney is a money-hungry engine, but they've proven to also be a good partner a la Marvel,

I don't think we can really judge that until Captain America: Winter Soldier and Thor 2. Did you notice the Iron Man 3 trailer still has the Paramount logo at the beginning? Even though Avengers and Iron Man 3 released/are releasing after the Disney acquisition they were already started under the Paramount Umbrella. Time will tell whether Disney will be as good of a partner to Marvel.

The Muppets,

I'm willing to accept that I just wasn't young enough when I finally got around to watching Muppet Treasure Island, but the Muppets have gone downhill since Christmas Carol. Have you seen their straight to DVD stuff? I have. My niece has a few of them. Muppet Wizard of Oz is like watching a beloved Uncle lose his job and sucking truckers for some blow in the back alley of a McDonald's. While I enjoyed the latest installment, it just doesn't have the same wit as the older stuff (and considering I started watching the original movie not long after I saw the new one, and I hadn't in yeeeeaaaars and actually forgot most of it so nostalgia wasn't a factor).

Muppets are HARDLY a good measure to go by in this situation.

and Pixar.

@BioWong tweeted: "Disney bought Pixar for over $7B. It is crazy for anyone born before 1985 to believe LucasFilm ended up going for less."

I was born on 1985, but thinking on it, that's actually pretty astonishing. Pixar was bought around 2005 or 2006, and honestly, when I heard about that deal I was surprised since I already thought Pixar was owned by Disney.

Now then...

A friend of mine on Facebook asked me to think of the Kingdom Hearts possibilities.

I mean seriously. Disney characters + Final Fantasy characters + Marvel Movieverse + Star Wars + Indiana Jones.

f*ck Sony All-Stars, let's get a Disney smash bros. clone going.

Semi-Tannhauser'ed, but there ya go.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot and yet another thing I never expected to hear today.

I sense a sudden disturbence on the interwebz....as if a billion nerds raged all at once.....

And over what, too? Are they afraid that Disney is going to turn Star Wars into commoditized kid-focused drek? Or that Disney will be unable to rescue Star Wars from the commoditized kid-focused drek that it is, and return it to... wait, nevermind.

A big question: what does this mean for the Star Wars fan films and fan culture? Lucas, for all his faults, was incredibly tolerant of that space, and I can't see the Mouse being an improvement there.

Running away, or running towards the desperate cries of those in need?

This...is the first truly good question I've heard on this whole deal, and one that actually concerns me.

Uhhh, I actually have a Darth Vader/Goofy plush doll that I got at Disney World a few years back.

I asked Demyx about this while we were at WDW a few weeks ago. There's some contractual thing that says Universal has theme park rights to Marvel IP on the EAST side of the Mississippi until 2030. So no Marvel rides in CA except in Disneyland. This also had the benefit of granting Disney access to Universal's theme park books as well.

More importantly, maybe there's an actual chance of getting the old LucasArts games on GOG. And if this gets them the talents at LucasGames as well, then that's probably a good thing for their gaming division.

Speaking of which, I'm surprised they didn't grab Traveler's Tales while they had their wallet open. Between Disney and LucasArts that's like 50% of the IP they've worked on lately.

EDIT:

You can find a ton of cross-over merchandise like that at Disney World.

Also, Disney's MGM Studios have run "Star Wars weekends" since 1997. Don't think this exactly changes a whole lot and has probably been a move on the table for a while.

Shrug, friend posted the comments and the picture on Facebook, I thought it was funny;0)

So random thought, does this make Leah a Disney Princess now?

I'm really happy about this. I do like what Disney has done with Marvel and Pixar, and don't see how this can go wrong with LucasFilms.

A few FB friends are bent out of shape that George is still being credited as a "creative consultant" for the time being, but my take is its probably so he gets some residuals off of episodes 7, 8, and 9.

Anyone have a ballpark as far as ownership breakdown of LucasFilms? I'd be really interested in knowing roughly how much of that $4bn is going into George's pocket.

I'm also excited that this purchase includes the whole portfolio - all the LucasArts IP is now under Disney's control, as well as Indiana Jones, and all the patents held by ILM and Skywalker Sound.

Okay, that is the best news out of all this. That is a Disney Princess I would happily endorse for my daughter (for whom Disney Princesses will otherwise be verboten).

The Zahn books would be great source material, but remember that they feature the characters from the original series 5 years after Episode 6. While I suppose it's possible that they could just re-cast younger actors to play Luke et all, I think it's much more likely that they'll just ignore all the existing expanded universe stuff and develop a new story with new characters -- albeit possibly featuring older versions of the original series characters in minor supporting roles; i.e., Mark Hamill playing an old Luke as a Jedi teacher, etc.

Don't forget Cars 2.

But otherwise, pretty solid track record.
