Disney Buys LucasFilm, Star Wars Episode 7 in 2015

For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next,” said George Lucas, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Lucasfilm, in a statement. “It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I’m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come. Disney’s reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products.”

So exciting for me for Star Wars to be out of George's hands.

An X-Wing ride at Universal Islands of Adventure or something could be awesome.

Still, I'm scared to death about whatever movie ideas they have. Not sure it could be worse than Episode 1. But then again...

I...what?

Weird about the new film. I suppose it was expected ... eventually.

THIS.

Sure Disney is a money-hungry engine, but they've proven to also be a good partner a la Marvel, The Muppets, and Pixar. I really feel like this could be an amazing move. I didn't think we'd see it before George kicked off.

My reaction as well.

I guess the Disney Marvel movies have been ok. Maybe this will work out.

Wait... what?

EDIT: Hey maybe we'll actually get an actual re-release of the original films for nostalgia's sake? That's something Disney knows how to peddle very well.

I'm sure he'll still be involved. This probably gives them full access to Indiana Jones.

Missed a huge typo in there Also, Star Tours.

So while this is a surprise announcement, LucasArts and WDW have been fairly tight for a while I believe.

They only do that for limited time "out of the vault" releases which they can price gouge on by constricting supply.

Thus the prospects for a real bluray despecialized edition, legal and everything, go up enormously.

Yeah, that's what we want and need... even more Star Wars merchandise. IMAGE(http://www.skype-emoticons.com/images/facepalm.png)

Then you better grab it while it's hot then

Did they specifically say that "Episode 7" would be released or just "another Star Wars movie"? They have plenty of room to make movies before, between, and around the established six episodes.

Grand Admiral Thrawn in film form. Fingers crossed so hard.

Currently, I view this a good news - with Ep 1-3 and the Indy disaster, Lucas has shown that he's not up to the task any longer.

Was my first thought.

Was my second thought

My first thought was "Wait, it is not April! "
Then my 2nd thought was "There is no way that Lucas would let creative control slip away."
Then my third thought was "Even Lucas has a price for his baby. And that price is 4,000,000,000 dollars."

This. So much this

I've got a bad feeling about this.

As someone who has't truly forgiven Lucas for the Ewoks (and didn't even bother with the last two movies), I can't say that this surprises me at all. He stopped making movies (and instead opted to optimize his burger advertising delivery vehicle) a long time ago.

The acquisition also raises questions about the future of Stars Wars: Clone Wars, a highly popular series on the Cartoon Network, which is owned by Disney’s competitor, Turner Broadcasting, a division of Time Warner.

Boooo! That show's the best thing to come out of the Star Wars licence in AGES. It'd be a damned shame if it gets canned.

3 years seems kind of a short time to pull a movie out of thin air..

that being said, make it animated and let ILM and Pixar go nuts with it together.

That's probably the most important part of the story, besides Ep7 in 2015. I can't expect it to be anything more than kid's stuff, since that's what the majority of the Star Wars franchise has become at this point. If it turns out to be anything more interesting, we can all be delighted together.

At least that way you can get Mark Hamill to play Luke Skywalker again. Weirdly, of all the actors he may be the one with the best current career.

I saw this on facebook with no link provided, I thought I was being trolled.

This is the first Star Wars news in years that actually gives me hope for the franchise.

This. It works like gangbusters for the rest of Disney's properties. It will work for Star Wars.

Lucas ain't getting any younger - I actually applaud him for ensuring that there's an orderly hand-off.

A new hope you might say.

You forgot Red Tails too.

I am cautiously optimistic about this news.
