2012, end of the world, or end of your pile? - the 12 month thread

Okay, since we are getting into the season of sales. Thought I would post my list. Beat a few more games off of it over the last month or so. And have put tons of time into MWO and LoL which have both been awesome.

IMAGE(http://i.imgur.com/i8Kt3.png)

Still on pace to get close to pile zero again before December, depending on how good the sales are throughout November. If I can get some time into Just Cause 2 and Warlock soon I will put some more time into Skyrim and CK2, both of which I still love playing here and there. Would like to start a new character with some of the mods that really change things up in Skyrim. Would also like to continue to work on my campaign in CK2 where the King of Poland is now the King of Poland AND Norway.

Also plan on playing some SWTOR when it goes F2P here pretty soon.

Fair Warning Kamikazi, the FTP options for SWTOR look incredibly lame. For example, you have to pay for the sprint ability, and you also have very limited space battles, instances or PVP fights you can run a week. Oh, if you're a previous subscriber you also get lots of cartel coins. The catch? You have to resubscribe for a month to access them.

Long story short, I was also thinking about crossing off SWTOR since I'm like level 47 with my commando. I'm thinking instead I will probably abandon.

I just re-signed up for SWTOR, so if anyone wants to party up let me know. Haven't had the pleasure of playing with non-random people yet. Also, thank goodness this holiday season has almost nothing I'm interested in buying.

Yeah, I am mostly in it for the story, and doing some research tonight F2P still gets sprint at level 10 (like at launch) but paying gets it for you at hte beginning. I thought it was at least kind of interesting for my Jedi Knight for levels 1-12ish when I played my free week from a friend.

I fully admit there is a good chance I will play for a few hours, remember how much I hate MMOs, and stop. But I figure I should at least give it a chance.

See for me most of my interest comes int he form of Free To Play, I can honestly say the 2 things I am most excited for for this year are Planetside 2 and Mechwarrior Online. I am already playing MWO and love it and I am really looking forward to playing Planetside 2 when it launches, both without having to actually buy anything.

I have a lot less of a problem with a pile if it represents no monetary investment from me.

Well, I was gonna offer you my copy for $20, but decided to check prices, and found it's only $10 shipped at Newegg. I wouldn't feel right asking for $20 and I'll hang on to it if all I can get is $10 or less.

You're welcome!...?

Tempting, but I think I did enough damage this year already... :/

I'm abandoning Shaun White Skateboarding.

On paper, it looked neat: de Blob + Skateboards. The implementation is terrible though, mostly with the controls. It's like they took the Tony Hawk controls and the Skate controls and mushed them together without understanding what made either of them work. The result is not fun to play.

I only got it because when I cashed out of Goozex, though, so I'm not too fussed about it.

Went to target this morning for a B2G1 deal...

Belated well wishes and cake and stuff!

Thanks! Now I've got 3 more games on my pile!

Yeah, I am getting ready to post my first update in a while. I knocked Dishonored off the pile yesterday, but also added Operation Raccoon City.

But that's going to sit to the side until I find people willing to drop $20 to co-op an alright but not great game with me. On the PS3 no less!

Let's see, I beat Rayman Origins and Metroid Prime 2, and I completed New Super Mario Bros. 2. But I also added GoldenEye 007 and Monster Hunter Tri. Not bad for a month.

I already posted a larger update, but this month saw Theatrhtyhm, World of Goo, Kirby's Dream Land go down. Thinking I can at least beat the normal difficulty on Kirby's Adventure tonight or tomorrow unless I get distracted by mannes and hattes.

Unfortunately, I forgot to update my master list with Wii U titles, so I think all this progress is getting wiped next month #firstworldproblem

I, trueheart78, solemnly pledge to take part in the Pile of Shame monthly threads. Even if it is just for one game, I will put forth effort to clear my ever-growing pile, one game at a time.

I also pledge to do everything within my ability to restrict my game purchases to those that I've listed, and, if I should falter, will shamefully add them to the pile in full sight of this support group.

My backloggery Memory Card is reporting a positive number for the first time ever. And that number is 14, after adding my free copy of Civilization V.

Am I missing something about Civ V? It feels almost exactly the same as what I remember Civ 2 being back in the day. It'll likely only hold my interest for a single playthrough, and only long enough to dominate the world via military means. These games just seem to drag way too slowly for me. I always feel like I should be able to accomplish something fairly quickly and it then feels like it took forever to get that thing done, but I somehow keep wanting to play.

I have realized that Fall TV starting up takes away a significant chunk of time to play video games. I calculated that currently, there are up to 12.5 hours of new TV shows per week that my wife and I watch together to stay up-to-date, which is roughly the amount of time it would take to get through an entire video game.

Furthermore, a lot of my time in September and October has been spent playing Guild Wars 2 and Mists of Pandaria, and MMO's are notorious timesinks. I hit max level and finished the solo main storyline in Guild Wars 2, so even though I didn't do the dungeon to kill the big baddie, I consider this "beaten." For Mists of Pandaria, I'm considering getting the "Loremaster of Pandaria" achievement as beating it, as it implies you've completed all the main storyline leveling quests (currently level 89 and have 2+ zones to finish quests in).

Besides TV and MMO's eating up my free time, I've also pre-ordered/purchased up some fall releases, despite not really having to play them at the moment (AC3 probably could have been a Xmas gift, not a day-one purchase). Looking forward at Nov/Dec, the only things I know I'm buying are the final episode of The Walking Dead and Little Inferno (assuming it does come out this year), both of which will probably be quick games. While I don't expect to completely clear by pile by the end of the year, I do hope to whittle it back down to just a handful of games.

Games shamefully purchased this month

  • nein. for once.

I, Minarchist, solemnly pledge to remain incredibly awesome just like I am now. Also, to take part in the Pile of Shame monthly threads. Even if it is just for one game, I will put forth effort to clear my ever-growing pile, one game at a time.

I also pledge to do everything within my ability to restrict my game purchases to those that I've listed, and, if I should falter, will shamefully add them to the pile in full sight of this support group.

Copying from my Backloggery Memory card:

October:

Transformers: War for Cybertron (PS3)
Batman: Arkham City (PS3) (last night by 11PM)

As many as 28 games if you count the DLC items separately. Otherwise 26.

Games I figure I'll play and finish by the end of the year:
Sanctum (Steam) - marked it as beat on backloggery in disguest after getting to the final wave of the final level and losing multiple times. I will try to replay the level again.
Dead Island (Steam)
Dungeon Defenders (Steam)
Mega Man 9 (Wii)
Civilization V (Steam)
Kirby's Epic Yarn (Wii)

I've started all of these, and in the case of Sanctum, MM9, and DD I'm quite close to finishing them.

I can't believe I haven't updated this list since June. It seems with warm weather came a much more active and social me, and now that the weather is getting cold I've become a hermit once more.

Considering the Conference Call crew noted that they all themselves go through moods where they really like games and times where they don't play much, I figure this is just a normal phase of life. As such I shall embrace it and use it to not only loooove games, but to clear the pile.

Unfortunately, my pile increased by 14 games since I checked in at the end of May, and my progress only increased by 9 games. That is a surplus of fiver games, and this doesn't even count all the digital games on my PS3 from the free PSN+ sales (just The Walking Dead).

But I've organized my physical PS3 and Xbox 360 games into two separate completion piles. I've also set aside Operation Raccoon City on the PS3 to see if I can get someone willing to nab it for $20 like I did and play co-op (hint hint nudge nudge?).

I am confident I can knock a couple other games off the pile this month (including Mark of the Ninja in the next day or two), but I have no clue what Black Friday will bring.

For 2012
Beaten: 9
Abandoned: 6
Acquired: 11
Standing: +4

Per Backloggery, my year-to-date totals:

Beaten: 24
Completed: 11
Added: 44
Removed: 46

Without counting removals, I've added a net of 9 games over the year. If you count removals as clearing off the pile, I've removed a net of 37.

*sigh* -30 on my backloggery progress for the year

Granted, it's my all time best but I was really hoping to come in lower than that.

The progress number is an interesting idea, but mine (-35) isn't quite accurate since I have done a lot of reorganization.

Most of new games were either trades for games I didn't want anymore, Steam gifts, or cashing out of Goozex.

Here's the breakdown (grouping beaten and completed together as finished)

Had at year start: 47 (14 unfinished including 3 abandoned but re-added, 18 finished, 15 abandoned)
Bought new: 10 (6 unfinished, 3 finished, 1 abandoned)
Traded: 3 (3 unfinished)
Goozex Cashout: 7 (2 unfinished, 4 finished, 1 abandoned)
Steam gifts: 13 (11 unfinished, 2 finished)

Total: 80
Finished: 27
Abandoned: 17
Unfinished: 36

Backloggery calculates it as Progress = Beaten + Completed - New - Unfinished. They list Unfinished for me as 5, so presumably Unfinished in that calculation means games that were unfinished at the beginning of the year, but I'm not certain of that.

I started fresh at the beginning of the year, so Unfinished is 47. New is 33. So my number should be (27 - 47 - 33) = -53 but that seems high. Maybe Unfinished is calculated differently.

I think what the formula is trying to represent is what you added to the pile vs what you cleared from the pile, so games that were abandoned should be counted as well. As it stands, I don't think backloggery to take that into account because they don't track Removed when it was unfinished, vs Removed when it was finished.

The formula for that would be Progress = Beaten or Completed this year + Abandoned this year - Acquired this year. That actually puts me at +8 this year. I'm much happier with that number.

I ended up beating Mark of the Ninja last night, which leaves me with the first blank slate I've had for a while...sort of. I keep forgetting I haven't beaten Dragon's Dogma yet, but now I have weird guilt. I love Dragon's Dogma and want to play more, but I also want to get through games like El Shaddai and Assassin's Creed: Revelations.

Y'know what? I'm making a decision. I'll play El Shaddai as my short game and AC: Revelations as my long game, and once Revelations is done I'll move on to Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom as my short game and Dragon's Dogma as my long game.

Bam. Plan for November.

Good luck! Long and shorts worked well for me at the start of the year. I'd pick one Retail, and one Arcade title for 360. Former was played when I knew I could sit and play for a while, the later if I only had bite sized opportunities presenting themselves.

Worked pretty well, until my current 'no-time' for games hit recently.

At this point I'm just waiting until next year. This year is a wash, so trying to make any noticeable dent is... well, not worth it.

Question: Does selling games I will never beat count?

If they aren't yours anymore, then they can't be on your pile.
