Recommend me a tablet

Might want to wait to decide: My sources say that Apple is due to announce a major update to the iPad line this spring.

Spoiler:

I don't have sources.

More than that, since the iPad 4 was unleashed in the Fall, it's perfectly aligned with the iPods and iPhones for the Christmas rush. I can't think of many downsides for Apple in moving/keeping iPad launches in the Fall.

The post was somewhat tongue-in-cheek due to the recent release scheduling snafu. However with all the direct competitor tablets launching in the coming months I wouldn't be surprised if Apple managed to pull a killer update (whether hardware or software) out of their pockets to re-affirm their dominance once the challengers are on actual store shelves.

I just saw that Google is coming out with a 10 inch Nexus soon and this has me in a quandry. I love my iPad - but mostly because of the size. I had planned on upgrading to a new iPad in the spring but I love my Android phone. I even bought an N7 when they came out - but I sold it because I couldn't stand the smaller size compared to the iPad. A 10" Nexus removes that problem.

What should I buy in the spring?

I would be considering a Windows 8 or Surface Tablet. But we still get all the use we need out of our first gen iPad.

Spec comparison for the new 10" Nexus, iPad, Galaxy Note, and Kindle Fire HD

The Nexus 10 is looking better and better.

That chart makes the Kindle look pretty compelling at $299 for the 16gb and $369 for the 32gb (compared to $399 and $499 for the N10). It's specs are pretty good as long as you don't care about the rear facing camera.

I have never used the rear facing camera. In fact I have only used the front one once I think to Skype.

It's really useful for scanning apps. I take pictures of documents and the app OCRs it and turns it into a PDF. I also use it w/ Evernote to take pictures of a whiteboard to save a to-do list or a brainstorming session. I almost never use it as a traditional camera, but I've found it is really handy to be able to grab data with it.

Actually your comment reminded me that I have started using the camera I have an app called MyFittnessPal for tracking my diet and you can use the camera to scan the barcode and get nutritional information about the item. I have used it a few times (mostly for fun)

I'm leaning very strongly towards a Windows 8 device in the next few months, just sorting out some financial overheads and seeing how the market plays out in Win8 devices.

Any buzz on the Lennovo Helix?

This actually looks like the tablet I've been waiting for... AND IT HAS A NUBBIN. God I love the IBM nubbin.

And Wacom which is the only reason I'm looking at a tablet.

How does one lock something like this to a desk?

Anyone have any advice on a Samsung Tab 2? Looking into getting a 7" wifi for DMing (storing character sheets, encounter information, etc... so I can stop writing) and web browsing while gaming (during which, my wife is usually on the laptop)... any thoughts on this?

EDIT: And in the interest of saving some cash, new versus refurbished? Thoughts?

Hi, wow this thread is from 2010... but ok.
I have a neat project, I bought a Toshiba tecra M7 in 2005 with the kickass centrino 2.0 processor, and used it for 3 years with photoshop and windows xp pro 32bit and loved everymoment of it. Even tho i had no idea what i was drawing or doing. Then i became interested in photography and windows 7. years past by and the tab just RAN and ran and ran, it ran hot mind you, every day since day one, until today (gets to about 100C in about 90 seconds and stays there, idling, let alone while photoshopping) True testament to toshiba, they created a true GEM 9 years working STILL, and is f-i-n-e. But alas, nothing lasts forever. (the payments also lasted for years, needless to say, when i bought it, it was practically so new it was still wet behind the ears, and it cost me upwards of $3800. I finished paying off that credit card in 2010 hahahah)

Now adays the files i run are just too large, and i really really want preassure sensitivity. Something i think, mind you im not sure, i cannot currently do. Maybe im wrong, i only have the stock Toshiba stylus. I havent gotten into how to get pressure to work, yet according to the interwebs it IS possible. So what i really want to do is resurrect this thing!

I went a read somewhere that the core 2 duo T7200 processor is 64bit capable, so i confirmed this on Intels website, and alas, there it says 64-bit. But i have yet to find somebody thats running any 64 bit OS on the Tecra M7, but screw it, im going for it.

I bought 2x4GB of ram, a SSD, and a IDE BD-RW drive (for backing up data, not playing blue rays, only has VGA/Svideo out) all for about $300, and i also got Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit ISO and key from a local store, and im going to town with this thing. As soon as it gets to me in the mail, im upgradding the hardware, ditching the old 80GB HDD and starting fresh. This should let me hanndle bigger files, get rid of the very slight, yet noticable lag the stylus had in photoshop (i got used to it after about a month) and let me use it as a home made wacom Cintiq or wahtever.

TLDR?

What i really want is to know, what i need to get the pressure sensitivity i need. Do i need a new stylus, or do i need a driver? do i need a clue? why cant i find this anywhere.... does my stock one even work for pressure? the only thing i know is that it has no batterry, its active, and that wacom is the monopoly in that kind of stylus, and that the modern wacoms have 6million bagillion points of pressure, ad i have 1.
If i can find somebody to help figure this out, im think im golden.

A quick Google search makes it sound like you just need to install the Wacom drivers, maybe apply the Registry tweak mentioned here.

You remind me of my old Toshiba M200 which broke about 3 years ago. It was my main laptop for 7 years ($700 on ebay when I got it).

Its funny now to think of the looks I used to get in class in 2004 by writing on the screen of a computer(!), or how flummoxed people would get when I would try to explain that 'its a tablet AND a computer... what do you mean, "what's a tablet"?'

They were definitely ahead of the curve. Honestly, until the Surface Pro come out with pressure-sensitive digitizer support there was nothing that beat the M200 in both size, screen sharpness (146ppi) and note taking versatility. Pen input on XP was a but of a kludge but worked serviceably well (I remember having to install an app that would let me quickly rotate the screen to read web pages vertically).

Back in 2004/2005 I used to spend a lot of time on tabletpcbuzz.com and reading Bill Gates interviews where he called the tablet the form-factor of the future... and then of course he left and Balmer made Vista and windows 7 before expanding on those ideas, while Apple invented the iPad.

Speaking of which, the only thing that would make me upgrade my iPad3 would be digitizer support, so I guess I've come full circle.

EDIT: Some more tablet nostalgia. Hard to believe this article is from as late as 2009.

The funnier thing is it mentions the surface but it does not mean the surface you and I know now. It means the table sized tablet (tablette?)

Anybody have any hands-on experience with the newest Dell Venue 11 Pro or the Asus Transformer Book T100?

I'm digging around a bit for a brother-in-law that's looking for a tablet-hybrid that's Office-capable and those two tablets seemed to cover both ends of the features/expense spectrum decently from the reviews that I've seen.

I'm waiting on somebody to put a mini-HDMI on one of these little tablets so that you could hook it to a monitor and wireless keyboard. Why hasn't that happened?

Don't forget the Lenovo IdeaTabs. They're pretty nice sounding, too.

My old Asus transformer prime tf201 tablet has a mini hdmi out. I think ipads can have hdmi out with an adapter as well. Or are you talking about the small 7" size tablets?
