Forza Horizon Catch-All

The more I read, the more I like. But I might hold off until this goes to On Demand. Right now NFS Shift is my go to racing game when the mood hits.

But as I said in my initial impression of the demo, this feels like the next PGR game I had been hoping for. That's kind of what I liked about the Shift series. It's coo that we are starting to see more games with a better balance between realism and arcade racing. Or action racing, as the devs of Forizon want to call it.

Not wanting to enable you, or crack your resolve, but coming from that lineage of PGR and Shift, you will love this one.

I have a place in my heart for the true blood racers, but I got more enjoyment than I should from Shift, and PGR (and Metropolis Street Racer/Vanishing Point on DC). This effortlessly steps into the next phase for this genre. E-Brake drift bonuses, near miss, drafting, all with a chain multiplier bonus. All those actions rank up points, alla kudos, and unlock sponsor bonuses.

You even score points for conduct. Dodge between two cars, getting a near miss, hop into oncoming traffic, almost take them out, the e-brake, take a corner, take out a few road signs, then keep going, DareDevil level x of x pops up.

I'm having a blast with this, and I've only done three official races so far

Yeah, I imagine I will pick this up sooner than later. Of course, I have dishonored sitting sext to my Xbox, not getting near the time it should because I have been pretty much on a NHL 13 only mode. And next week when ACIII drops, it will just get worse.

But yeah, this just seems to land in my sweet spot for racing games.

GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!

I kid, grab a beer, sit a spell.

Picked this up today after work, having tried the demo the other day. I quite like it so far, it feels like a weird mix of 3 games I played A LOT this console generation; Project Gotham Racing 3, Forza 2 and Test Drive Unlimited. Although I enjoyed the few races I did, the coolest part was just driving along the open road in the dark and watch the sun come up, wow, looked awesome...

Oh, friend me up people, love to race some goodjers and/or compete on the leaderboards (you'll most likely beat me ). My gamertag is 'estorino'...

I got mine too. It's strange, the package said next-day air, but I didn't pay for it.

Have you gotten an email with the other coupons yet? It said the 1600 would be sent once it was shipped, but I haven't seen anything.

Guys on NeoGaf say MS emails the codes a day or so after street date.

Still no code here >.> you?

Yup.

Got the email only a couple hours ago.

Just picked up a copy during my lunch break. I'm hoping to play it into the early hours tonight while watching Tested.com's Octoberkast. New Forza game + Jeff Green/Idle Thumbs crew/GB crew/Darren Gladstone (haven't heard him for years!) = all kinds of awesomness.

Sometimes you have an amazing drive in a replica of your friend's car...

So I am officially getting this, but I'm not picking it up for more than a week. I have a source at Microsoft (my brother) who is getting me a copy for the employee discout price. We are meeting next weekend for a family reunion, so I am getting it from him then.

For all of my concerns about how they are selling fast traveling, it looks like overall the game is loads of fun. Can't wait to jump in.

Hopefully I can get my brother (Infinitely Loopy) to join us. He is responsible for me getting an Xbox back when PGR 2 came out. He wanted my wife to get me one so we could race. This feels like a good game to jump back into this with him.

Sweet! My TH8RS shifter just came in. Now I can ditch this crappy Fanatec shifter and hopefully get some driving time this weekend.

Err...but you know that will only work on the PC side, right? (only brought it up because if where you posted this)

RAWR! Waiting on the postman to drop off one of these. I missed out on the interfaceone board but just found this one.

Just picked up my copy.

If anyone wants my code for the 2012 Challenger SRT8 in Forza 4 let me know. I don't have the game and won't use it.

Okay, I've only put a few minutes on it, but holy sh*t the TH8RS is amazing. It's not perfect, but it's sooo much better than Fanatec's shifters that it's ridiculous. Thomas had better really come out with something special with the vapor Clubsport Shifter.

Wow, cool!

I really don't like that people can run speed trap challenges in multiplayer where there's no traffic and put those times against people doing it with traffic in single player.

I'll take the code. I'm not getting Forizon for a while because I'm a poor college student.

It's yours. I'll be home Sunday probably and PM it to you.

Hadn't thought of that, but yeah that totally stinks!

But at least there's nothing more tied to beating a friend's time than ego, not credits or some such. In every other case, like roads discovered, I like how your multiplayer world is the same as your singleplayer world (Infected and King really help ticking all those little town roads of my map).

Concerns < 0

Seriously, I couldn't imagine why people would be doing fast travel (other than to your hub, and that is free from the getgo).

All that time to drift, skid, near miss, dare devil, challenge rivals into a street race or just take in the sites. It boggles my mind how anyone would want to 'skip' that.

This is exactly what I really like about the game, just the feel of driving. I'll have to pick it up at some point, the demo was fantastic, I got lost for an hour or so in it.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but from where I'm standing, the multiplayer racing is garbage. Imagine every car is made of paper and powerful fans have been set up all over the tracks. That accounts for the tumbling, driving 15 ft in the air, and rocketing forwards, though not for the cars that drive embedded in the ground. Well, I'm just playing for the achievements, and even managed to win a Reventón in a level-up.

The special game modes are a riot, without a bit of lag weirdnes at least.

I agree. Lag wasn't too bad for me, but I think I was hooked up with a group of locals.

The hardest part for me was in a game of Cat and Mouse, when I was the cat, but the mouse was traveling 'under' the road surface?!?!

The only thing that might keep me coming back is the lure of all, those 'free' $190,000+ vehicles. Best I've grabbed for myself so far is the Lotus 2-11.

So I'm really enjoying this, once I figured out how to turn off the driving line. I haven't played any of the other forza's before. There's some oddities though like the unskippable constant cutscenes and drive through foliage but not cow skulls. What's with the difficulty? I left the opponents on medium and they give a challenge early in each race (yeah, I suck) but 75% through it's like they give up and I blow past them... variable difficulty during the race almost? Do I need to change it in the middle? If I put it on hard off the bat I lose bad.

After spending all evening with it, I am thoroughly disgusted and perplexed. Why would they pay for licensing of these cars and then only use the appearance? I thought they would more or less match the real world performance wise but it's not even close.

Bump up your difficulty level. Expert turns off the hidden STM in addition to the exposed aids.

Perplexed? disgusted? We are not playing the same game. About difficulty: Medium is ridiculous and they do slow down in the last third of any race. Same with hard, except for the guys in the top 2 positions it seems and it makes for much for thrilling races...of course you need to drive very well to get 1st or 2nd.

Yeah, the hell with that, I'm not pausing in the middle of a race to change the difficulty, that's just stupid. I want opponents to be the same difficulty at the beginning and the end of single races.

I'm not saying pause, just play against Hard difficulty all the time and if you want more realistic performance, turn off ALL the assists.

With all the off roading (and other opportunities for drifting) it really started to annoy me that the CSR wheel really has no good way to use the handbrake, so I decided to do this mod:

I worked out pretty well, but I am a bit worried that my solder points may eventually come loose. Thankfully it shouldn't be too hard to open it back up and reattach if necessary.

One valuable note if you are considering doing this mod for yourself: there is no need to alter your sequential shifter at all (or even open it up). By simply looking at the pin connections inside the shifter it wasn't too hard to figure out that the wires connected to the down switch in the shifter mapped to the black and red wires inside the PS2 cable. As such, I just took the PS2 cable that came with the shifter set, stripped one side and soldered the black and red wires to the circuit board inside the wheel and left the standard PS2 connector on the other side. This lets me plug and unplug the shifter whenever I like which is not possible with the method demonstrated in the video.
