Hurricane Survival Thread 2012

Lights out in my mother's town. I hope the power comes back soon for everyone.

Snowing in WV and Va.

Parts of VA, for what it's worth. I'm on the other side of the mountain from Shenendoah National Park, and reports are of snow along Skyline Drive at 2000+ feet of elevation. Twenty-odd minutes away, and it's simply gusty winds and a helluva lot of rain.

The sky is all sorts of funky colors...never seen anything like this in my life...the wind is just freaking me out its so loud at times...pretty much no chance I will ever move anywhere where this isn't a freak event...but I guess 2 in 2 years maybe not so freak anymore

The drive in to work this evening was interesting. Downed power lines, broken branches in the road, and the inevitable moron who doesn't realize he should slow down because he's driving in a f*cking hurricane. Granted, it's not nearly as bad here in Maine as it is elsewhere, but still.

Kind of cool outside in Seattle. Think I might need a coat. Pray for me.

Yeah, I think it might start raining here in Portland. The sky looks a little grey.

On a serious note, hope everything is okay for everyone!

WOW that's a creepy pic.

Yeah it creeped me out a little because it's one of those things that takes a split second to register what's wrong.

All that's missing is zombies.

Ah, well. (Am I the only person who likes these kinds of things? Not destruction and death, obviously, but as a lifelong Yankee, I get a thrill out of severe weather. Something about the humbling power of nature, combined with hunkering down and riding it out.)

I love it too. I'm actually disappointed that things seems pretty tame in my neck of the woods in southern NH. Wind isn't that high, power's only barely flickered a few times. I'm sorta jealous of the people to the south getting to experience more of this thing.

Wind seems to have died down a little, but rain has picked up.

NYC without lights is creepy

Here in central NC, we just had some wind and mild rain. We get worse weather from random thunderstorms. Sorry to hear a lot of you have it far worse.

I've never been hurricane weather, but the winds/rain that I've seen by my apartment has been pretty amazing. Amazing in the sense I haven't lost power yet. I'm not jealous in the least for the video I've seen of the weather down in MA/NY/NJ.

according to reports, 3ft of water in the New York Stock Exchange....

CAN'T BELIEVE METOROLOGISTS USED MATH AND SCIENCE TO PREDICT THIS STORM. THEY MUST BE MAGIC WIZARDS.

Reporting from Princeton/Trenton, NJ here. 60-80mph gusts in our area and barely have power. We already lost a big tree in the back yard and have been seeing transformers and power lines blowing all night. Huge bright blue and green flashes. If this is a only Cat 1 then I don't even want to imagine what a 4 or 5 is like. Jesus.

Mayor Bloomberg going to speak again in a few minutes.

I think we rode out the worst in MD. I can see a number of outtages nearby but my building is still up. High winds, saw a couple of smaller trees go down, but overall north of Baltimore we're okay.

Explosion at the ConEd building (17 seconds in, and then again at about 2:58, not sure if it's the same video twice or not):

Zing!

Thank you; I didn't want to be the first one to make a joke about it. =P

From Mefi:

According to CNN, there are 3 feet of water on the floor of the Stock Exchange.

Christ. Are we going to have to bail out Wall St again? Only, literally, this time?

I opted to pull the original source in, Nicholaas, it seemed unfair to take credit for the joke.

and... apparently its not true...

Is this the first massive real news event that has twitter full of as many faked accounts as possible?

Mefi's now saying it might be fake too, but this comment is interesting:

I dunno, I have a friend who lives right on Wall, he says his apartment building's lobby has a good 2 feet of water in it.

Reports are saying over 4 million without power for the entire East Coast (800K+ in NJ). So far so good for our place but it looks like a light show/4th of July celebration outside with the transformers, powerlines, and/or lighting. Not sure WTF is going on out there but I've never seen those colors before.

I must be located in the most blessed section of NJ because our power has run fine all day. I think the biggest gripe from my family is not getting DirectTV and having to rely on Netflix or pre-recorded shows.

Coney Island Hospital may be on fire

If this is accurate, and lord knows it may not be, well... here's what they're saying as of now:

BREAKING NEWS: 10:21 PM This just over the radio – report of main building of Coney Island Hospital is on fire. Units are trying to respond but are reporting that streets surrounding the hospital are flooded and un-passable.

EDIT: 10:31 PM. FDNY is reporting that Coney Island Hosptial is surrounded by “three to four feet of water.”

EDIT: 10:33 PM. Reader James W is reporting that “Ocean Parkway from Ave W south as far as I can see, is flooded. There is a huge emergency response.”

EDIT: 10:41 PM. FDNY is reporting that they are unable to access Coney Island Hospital at this time. Dispatch responded with “no boats available.”

Con-Ed transformer building at 14th St and FDR Drive in Manhattan. Explodes at approx 3:10

Dammit. Daily Show is not new tonight. Stupid Sandy.

ABC New York is reporting that the backup generators at NYU Langone Medical Center have failed and the hospital is being evacuated (details are scarce). Talk about a worst case scenario!
