Hotline Miami

Pages

This looks great; all the makings of a great shoot 'em up. Set to release on Steam by year's end (with console versions underway).

"Hotline Miami looks and plays similar to the Grand Theft Auto games before they went 3D, if Vice City had come out on the original PlayStation. With a pastel pixel aesthetic inspired by 1980s Miami, the indie duo of Jonatan "Cactus" Söderström and Dennis "D.W" Wedin built a surreal, bloody shooter featuring fast-paced gunplay."

Hotline Miami

I will admit to liking the premise. A lot. I played the hell out of the original GTA.

Same here, but for GTA2. I'm a sucker for lo-fi, top-down games. Throw in a killer soundtrack, make it ultraviolet with an 80s setting? Shut up and take my money!

I want dat.

Anyone who has this and would like the soundtrack, all the music from the game is in the Steam\steamapps\common\hotline_miami folder in .ogg format.

This game looks awesome. Unfortunately, I seem to have an aversion to buying cheap games on Steam until they're on sale. That might be a good thing in this case though since it's apparently fairly broken.

double post

Nice....Thanks for the tip!

Yeah, I went back and fourth on the same thing. Probably going to pull the trigger on this game this weekend. Looks too damn good for $9.99.

I think this is a 'your mileage may vary' thing. I've not had any issues apart from one or two enemies bugging out on walls. I was going to wait for a sale, but the fairly stoic Eurogamer gave it 10/10 and RPS also love it.

Looks crazy fun.

Giant Bomb did their Quick Look today.

They also just wrapped on their Thursday Night Throwdown where Patrick played it in the back ground just so they could listen to the soundtrack.

It's definitely a your mileage may vary sort of thing. Wasn't buggy for me, save for two pop up that I ignored. More so it the fact that the hype and ratings for it are really high. Honestly it's overrated by quite a bit in my opnion. That being said it's still a good game with tremendous style. Only complaints is the story is a little nutty/meh and the bosses are annoying and cheap. Definitely worth playing though.

Not that hard to beat honestly, save for the bosses. Few of the masks are a bit broken making the game easier.

Patrick also mentioned they were actively patching, hoping to catch some of the known bugs.

Doesn't seem to buggy here. The soundtrack is soooo good.

Doesn't look like it's for sale yet though. You can buy separate tracks from the different artists though.

The game is amazing. It's like playing GTA Meatboy in the world of Dreamweb.
Highly recommended and worth the price for the music alone.

Took me 5 hours to finish it in the first run, so well worth the full price in my book.

So, it looks cool. But- curious why I've seen so many people so excited for the release. Is this from a seasoned team that has other great releases? Is it based on something else that was awesome? Or is it just that press played it before and loved it?

Also, what's so great about it? It looks cool and I'm interested- but what takes it from competent to awesome?

I think someone else said it before but the entire soundtrack is in the game folder's in OGG format as well. I definitely do want to buy a FLAC version of it though, if for no other reason than to support the artists. I hope a single compilation comes soon. People seem to be screaming for it.

Read the gushing on RPS and had to bite. Picked up the GOG version last night and gave it a spin this morning. The music is great, of course. The controls take a bit getting used to for someone like me who has been on the control pad for the last 5 years now. I dig the mash-up of top-down GTA and Manhunt.

I think it really the raw style of the game. Personally I think it's a bit over hyped, but it is a good game none the less. But basically tons of style is what's got everyone so excited.

I heard someone describe like this: "Video games don't have their Citizen Kane yet, but now they have their American Psycho"

Alright, good perspective to take into account- thanks.

Yeah, it really is one of the most aesthetically sure-footed games of the year. Everything about the presentation comes together brilliantly, so it's easy to forgive when you get some difficulty spikes, or a frustrating boss fight. And the feeling when and eveything comes together is fantastic.

You're faced with three guys in a room. You kick down a door, sending the guy behind it flying, beat the second guy's brains in with a basebal bat, then down the third guy's by throwing the bat in his face, go back to the first, turn his head to mush with your fists, grab a knife that he dropped and slice up the third guy who's just been getting on his feet. Hotline Miami provides some of the most cinematic fights I've had in gaming all year.

It's also kind of disturbing. The bastard lovechild of American Psycho and Drive.

I was mulling over picking up this or The Walking Dead games from Telltale, but I was in the mood for some mindless killing so I grabbed this. I'll echo most of the comments made already, it has a really fantastic soundtrack, the visual style is really fantastic in motion and the controls are pretty tight. While the story is pretty sparse and purposefully vague, the bits you pick up really do their best to reinforce the action in the game. It's very much an acid-tripping psychopath simulator, and that's not a bad thing.

The entire soundtrack can be found here (and it's something everyone should listen to) http://soundcloud.com/devolverdigita...

Also, controllers are supported, but you have to jump through a hoop or two to get it working until they add it in "officially." Cactus made a post about it on the Steam community here: http://steamcommunity.com/app/219150...

Just beat it and it took me about four hours total, and overall I'm quite impressed. The gameplay was near perfect, it had the best melding of visuals and soundtrack since bastion, and the plot was everything I wanted, which is to say unobtrusive (aside from the boss fights) and utterly bizarre.

Definitely not my favorite game this year, but most certainly the biggest surprise.

[spoiler] Anyone figure out what the puzzle is? I noticed the option in the menu whenever I was in the middle of a chapter but even after beating the game its still grayed out.

Playing this game makes me very tense. I'm probably going about it the wrong way, trying to plan each step and over-thinking everything. Have a feeling I'd loosen up if I just 'go with the flow' and embrace the quick deaths and restarts.

This game is excellent. It's like playing with a lone soldier in XCOM but sped up 100x with funky drugs and with unlimited lives.

Oh god DRM, what have you done.

As far as I'm concerned, the star pieces of the soundtrack are all for sale right here: http://music.musicofthemoon.com/albu...

kingschiebi

Spoiler:

I was wondering about those, I guess I'll just have to go through the game again. Oh well I can think of worse ways to spend my time. ;)

For reasons my feeble mind is unable to comprehend my previous post somehow broke the sites formatting, fortunately it looks like deleting the quotes fixed it.

Well, not entirely. It looks like you end-spoiler tag is actually an end-quote tag at the moment. And it was probably all started by the fact that your original post was missing an end-spoiler tag as well.

Seriously tempted to buy M.O.O.N.'s EP, but I'll wait for the soundtrack (It'll happen right? Right?) before making a decision.

For the puzzle (2-stage spoiler: first one if you want to uncover it yourself and the second one will be the plain solution - major story spoilers in both):

Obtaining clues

Spoiler:

During the first "episode" with Richard, wear the owl mask to uncover or highlight little purple 3x3 pixel gems. You can pick them up and it will unlock a letter in the puzzle section for each. Assemble them all and use the computer at the end of the second episode where you are playing the biker, before going down the sewers to get the real ending of the game

Puzzle Shortcut

Spoiler:

My voice is my pass.... - just kidding, it is "I WAS BORN IN THE USA"
