Hurricane Survival Thread 2012

Is that flooded or just very wet?

Very wet and completely empty. Reports are coming in that Atlantic City is heavily flooded and it's not even close to being the worst yet.

They just raised the surge estimate to 11' to 14' for NYC. She's strengthening because of the Gulf stream. I can't even begin to fathom what a surge of 14' would do to NYC and the surrounding areas.

Ocean City NJ is a bit more true to its name.

Oh goodess this is terrible. I can't bring myself to go to sleep; I'm stuck to the news, photos and twitter streams as this unfolds. Trying to play some Guild Wars 2 on my main screen to distract me but it's not really working.

Stay safe everyone.

I don't see a curb. :(

I do, in some spots.

Stay safe, people! I think this is the first time I've been glad I live in Ohio...

Look like Staten Island is going to get the part of the brunt. Times like this is when I hate vynel siding.

Tempest are you staying in Staten Island? If so good luck man...sh*t looks terrifiying.

Lots of flooding already on the CT coast. Luckily I'm dead center in the middle of the state so mostly out of the flood areas. I expect us to get a lot of rain but mostly the winds being the worst. I have a couple friends who are having some real issues.

Hoping you guys can see these images ....

This is from Milford (shoreline, but giving towns for those of you who know CT)

The worst is a good friend who just bought a house a couple months ago. This picture was posted just before high tide. In the back at the end of the road is a marsh so he's definitely going to get flooded. He posted this pic with the caption "It's time to go Nana's house".

Good luck to all.

We're way out of the way -- western MA -- and already have 35mph gusts and one town out of power. And we're HOURS away from this really starting. Crazy.

My parents live not far south from that area. As of last night, they're hunkered down pretty good (food, generator, gas in the cars, etc.) , but if this is anything like Irene they're probably going to be out and about with the fire department/ambulance squad for the next day or two

I definitely remember sitting in the dark on many occasion due to lines down during even random storms in the summer or winter, so I'm not terribly surprised there's already places without power. I guess that's just one of those joys of living out in the middle of nowhere :\

Seeing nasty pictures of LBI on my twitter feed. Love that island, hope it comes out ok. They've spent so much time and money building those beaches back up recently, to boot.

The waves roll right across those islands in any big hurricane. Fortunately, pretty much everything is on stilts these days. I guess we'll see how it works out.

Good luck guys. Thoughts are with you all.

Pretty big tree outside our window already has a cracked major limb.

I already lost power here in northern Rhode Island once today (died around 12:30pm and came back 45 minutes later). Wondering how long it'll be back for though...

I moved my car away from a storm drain that already had a small river flowing into it this morning. The wind is picking up - hopefully with so many leaves down, the wind doesn't knock too many trees over.

I'm a few neighborhoods away from Paleo and Robear, so at least I'm near good company!

Eeek. I keep checking the trees next to our windows. Unfortunately, one of our assigned parking spots is right underneath them...

Wind is really starting to howl now

Not even into the "peak" of the storm, and power is out somewhere because someone didn't take it seriously enough to tie their trampoline down. Jerks. One town over from us.

Hunkering down in CT and hoping for the best!

Wind and rain just started to pick up again here in NoVA. I'm sending my people home.

Good luck everyone. I hope it ends up as exciting but not dangerous.

Hudson river is overflowing in NY/NJ.

It's not looking good for my NJ hometown and the storm isn't even there yet. Luckily, my scattered family in NJ/NY are in safe places.

A friend of mine just posted on his facebook page that Romney tweeted that people in the path of hurricane Sandy should vacate their beachfront residences in favor of their penthouses and ski chalets.

Well, luckily we still have power here in Glastonbury, CT, but I don't expect that to last long. My wife just called from Hartford (where she works) to tell me to put on the coffee, since CT is steadily losing power. Once more, please be careful out there everyone.

Not on the official or team Twitters (as far as I can read), unless it was removed.

My friend was joking, of course.

It's been one joke being retold a hundred different times all over Twitter.

In any event, now we're really screwed.

Power just blinked here. Wind is nuts. Catch you all later!

I thought Sean Connery took care of that guy in Time Bandits.

I posted the same and here is what my friends wrote:

"I still think it's Photoshopped, That Neptune statue is obviously fake -- it's waaay too big compared to the Godzilla in the background."

and

"The forced perspective was a dead giveaway. All the *authentic* Godzilla photos show his truly titanic size. This one was obviously created by a Neptune fanboy."

Had one power flicker so far. I'm not worried about flooding at all since Im high up but it's definitely getting windy. Constantly looking at the tree next to me. The house creaking every now and then is what's freaking me out. I think we are at 50 mph gusts right now.

Ah, my bad. I've been stuck in a castle and on a social media blackout for the past few days (including most of today).

On the hurricane: It's crazy being on the very edge of this thing (getting some bleh weather here in Cincinnati) and seeing what's going on everywhere. The google crisis map, etc.

It's not cool.

My sister in law's place in the rich part of town is out of power. Kind of hard to put up underground power in the land of the McMansions, so they are out for now. We might be hosting her family and dogs.

Yay.
