iPad Games (and Apps) Catch All

Question of the century.

Man-At-Arms would know, you should totally ask him.

Spoiler:

Or Orko.

The real dirt is how Battle Cat became known as Cringer

I took a punt for 99c. Fairly solid side scrolling beat/slash em up. Move left digit left or right to move that direction, then tap right digit to swipe sword, or swipe up to jump. Combos of those for work well. No 'buttons' as such, just movement tracking on the two screen halves. Sprites look really well drawn. Overall, I'm liking it.

My 3 year old daughter is hopping on a plane this week, which means it's a great time to see if there's anything new on the iPad to keep her engaged. Any suggestions from the collective? Here's the apps she's into:

Curious George
Thomas the Tank Engine
Monkey Lunchbox
Angry Birds
Peter Pan
Toy Story
Boynton Books
Teach Me Toddler
Mickey Mouse Clubhouse

Thanks in advance!

Yep. It's fun so far, and I dig the art style. I'm only through the first couple of levels though.

Bartleby's Book of Buttons Vol 1 and 2 are really good. Just wish they'd come out with Volume 3.

My kids love the Duck, Duck, Moose apps, as well as Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Monster at the End of this Book, and the new Mickey Halloween book. My son, who is older, really loves Train Conductor and Hey, That's My Fish, and we adults play it as well.

Mickey Halloween book!?!? Nice!

My daughter loves any drawing/coloring app. Crayola, etc.

Thanks, gang. I forgot I had some of those other ones, like Bartleby, that she really likes. I did download that Mickey Halloween book and will probably download something else as well.

Based on the TouchArcade podcast, I picked up LetterPress. It's free, with a $1 IAP to unlock themes and the ability to have multiple games. It's a pretty interesting turn-based word game. I am having quite a bit of fun with it.

There's a 5x5 grid, and you claim letters by using them in words, until they are all gone. You can use any letter at any time, even ones your opponent claimed. If you surround a letter with other letters you claim, your opponent can use it, but doesn't get to claim it. The game ends when all the letters are used at least once, and whoever has the most letters wins.

Totally non-related to the quote, but DAMN YOU COUNSELOR!

Do,you know how long I spent in PopCap rehab, and then you go and send me that challenge!?!? (Congrats on the score BTW, impressive)

I was so proud of that game, I had to share!

I can stop anytime I want...

I just got in a couple of games with a buddy and I'm really liking it too. I'm usually garbage at Scrabble-types and not great at boggle things, but the key here is that it's not all about making big words with hard letters. It's all about growing and defending your letter group territories, almost a 50/50 word game to strategy game split. And it helps that Loren Britcher (atebits) put his usual amount of polish into the UI, making it a pleasure to both use and look at.

I have a matching game center handle, so throw me a game.

Oh sh*t, I just 'got' defending the letters...

Come on! Don't tell m0nk3y the secrets!

I'm trying to get my Scrabble savant friends to try it out without trying to supplement the instructions provided by the game's tutorial. I suspect that they'll actually do rather poorly on the first few games, being carried away with making the most extravagant words possible. It's feels a bit like Reversi, with the lead flip-floping between players every turn, and then it ends before you realize what happened.

I thought the letters also had to be adjacent to each other, like the old skool pen and paper word searches.

You can grab them from anywhere though.

Mwuhahahaha!

EDIT:
One thing this game needs, as did Outwitters, is a simple 'rematch' button/tab/prompt at the conclusion of the game.

Seconded, on Bartlebys. That series absorbed the mind of my 3 year old. Great entertainment and excellent charm/production values.

My own daughter is crazy for all of the Toca Boca games.

ARC Squadron is out. Starfox-esque shooter with a lot of upgrades, and levels. .99 USD today, goes to $4.99 tomorrow. I picked it up, and am now having problems working.

TA's Lets Play:

I picked up The Room when it was on sale last week, and got through the first two or three chapters. Really liking it a bunch. I hope they do another one like it.

Looks like that little nicety is not being extended globally.

AUD5.49, with a 'lite' demo available instead.

TA Forums were reporting it at a cheap price for Australia as well, which is why I posted the price. That's moderately disheartening.

I put two hours into this tonight. I really like it, but the ship and weapon prices make the IAPs look a bit too necessary. I'm at the end of the second set of levels, with the second ship fully upgraded. I replayed all of the first tier levels for cash to upgrade the ship. With a bit of luck, I should be able to beat the tier two boss, but I can see tier 3 being a pain without dropping some real world cash. It would take way too long to grind out the cash for the third ship and upgrades.

I have already decided that it is worth making the sale price up to the full price, but I would be a bit vexed if I had payed full whack only to be struggling to get beyond a quarter of the game without IAPs.

Just checked it again 'this morning' to see if there was a lag in the price being downgraded, no suck luck.

Based on Spider_j's appraisal, I'll happily add it to my AppShopper watch list, knowing the IAP is more than likely needed for the remainder of the game.

Shame, that looked like it could scratch an itch.

This is a great list for me to check out for my 2.5 year old son. His current favorites are Super Why! and Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood. The latter will be especially fun for your daughter if she enjoys flushing virtual potties and turning on virtual faucets. Both have a fair number of other activities as well as sticker pages that my son really loves. He also loves Drawing Pad. This app has a huge number of colors and implements for virtual drawings.

Cragmyre just alerted me to the fact that this...
