Where to go from here? Group game suggestions needed.

Hey all,

I've been gaming with the same friends since college. We have "game nights" on Tuesdays and Thursdays where we reserve a 3 hour block away from family and other responsibilities for the sake of our sanity.

At this point in time we are carving our way through Borderlands 2 in True Vault Hunter Mode but I'm starting to see interest waning. I give this game maybe a few more weeks until we start looking to move on until additional DLC arrives.

My problem is, for maybe the first time in 12 years I have no idea what to play next. Here's the major games we've played in the last twelve years:

WoW
Left 4 Dead 1 & 2
Starcraft II
Call of Duty: MW
Bad Company 2
Battlefield 2 and 3
League of Legends (The last game that held our attention for over a year)
Guild Wars 2 (lasted only a month)

Some people in our group really shy away from turn-based games (sadly). MMO's also seem to be falling out of favor with our group. We are also PC exclusive because some people refuse to play consoles for reasons that have never been any good, but aren't going to change.

Please fellow Gamers with Jobs, do you have any suggestions?

The genres that tend to work well are FPS, RTS, and action-RPG. Basically, any class-based multiplayer (vs. the AI/bots) should work.

What about something like Torchlight 2?

If you don't mind playing older titles, you have stuff like Civ V (caveat--you won't finish many games of this), Killing Floor, Dawn of War II, Company of Heroes, Alien Swarm, Magicka, etc.

The new Assassins Creed is out soon and I've heard good things about multiplayer.

Do you prefer coop or competitive?

If the answer is yes, give Magicka a spin.

If you guys like RTSes then have everyone grab a copy of Men of War and you can all die horribly together :D.

My best suggestion was Monster Hunter, but that's out because of the PC-only nature of the group.

Dungeons and Dragons Online is a really good action- and teamwork-based free to play MMO that has kept my attention where almost every other MMO has failed. Maybe float that idea.

Secret World is also a good group MMO, if you like horror and conspiracy and puzzles.

What about Team Fortress 2?

Oh right, TF2 now has a co-op vs. bots mode, although it plays best with 6 people.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Torchlight 2 seems like a great fit, but I'm the roadblock on that one. I tend to burnout on Isometric dungeon romps quickly so we avoided it.

We've done Magicka, Dawn of War II, CoH, and Alien Swarm for brief stints.

Assassins Creed is an interesting suggestion but could be a tough sell. I'll definitely look into it as I've enjoyed time with the first and second games.

Men of War is just too hardcore for my group. Once again, I think I'm the only person that owns a copy but I'm not sure about the attention spans of some of our players to hang with the learning curve on that one. I think it would be great though.

I've floated D&D online a couple times, but the MMO/F2P stigma is hanging over it. I've heard good things about it's depth and tight 5 man dungeon crawls.

Secret World just won't happen.

TF2 is sitting on everyone's hard drives and it is a game we played quite a bit in the past that I neglected in the original list. I never got a chance to try the Mann vs. Machine mode because of the queue issues when it released. Are there still problems there? We have people that come in and out of our group depending on what we're playing so a 6th won't be too hard to come by.

Hmm. If your group's in need of something new, I think being staunchly against even trying so many games is tilting the odds against yourselves.

The Syndicate FPS this year is a great co-op game, which I've heard compared to L4D. I can't speak to the validity of the comparison as I haven't put any time into L4D, but it's there. One of my favorite games of 2012. Plenty of positive testimony here (our thread).

My brother and I recently got into Star Wars: The Old Republic mmo, it's been a blast in multiplayer & it's free til you hit level 10.

We do have a problem trying new games because of the make up of our group. It has to be accessible because we consist of a couple of alpha gamers and a few people that we have to convince. Everyone is on a fairly tight budget lately so convincing them to try new things when they know a new game investment might have to last a few months makes it extremely difficult.

Sins of a Solar Empire.

Done.

*drops mic and walks away*

Ah I forgot that one. I've been pushing for Rebellion, so this is a great suggestion.
