Minecraft

I like using Magic Launcher because it makes it dead simple to allocate more system RAM to Minecraft. The difference between the default RAM allocation and 2 or 4 GB allocated is pretty noticeable.

For what it's worth, I've found the opposite to be true. Java only collects garbage when the allocated memory is full, so it will happily fill up that 2gigs whether it really needs it or not. Realistically Minecraft only needs 250megs plus some for Java overhead. Allocating 350MB in Magic Launcher really smoothed out performance for me, as well as using Optifine. This worked on both a formerly high end PC (circa 2009) and a low end rig from the same period. From 15-20 fps to 50-60fps on both systems, plus more stable multitasking.

I will try this on my modest laptop, perhaps setting it to 500MB.

I am also intrigued... will this work with the Technic pack?

Dakuna wrote:

Can't think of any reason it wouldn't. Basically this tweak just forces Minecraft to more efficiently collect garbage and prevents swap file usage.

Edit: I don't want to oversell this. A big part of that frame boost was enabling multi-core chunk loading with optifine. If you can't do that don't expect as big a performance boost, but you can expect a more stable experience that doesn't hog all of your system RAM.

If you go into the technic launcher options menu, there is already a pull-down that let's you set the memory allocation. Given the presence of the world anchor block, thank goodness for that option.

I only noticed a couple of options, maybe I need to revisit that. Also, if I set it high, my system runs out of memory and it crashes, which corrupts my world. I've had to restart like 5 times, so I quit playing it on my main pc and I'm playing on my laptop, which appears to be more stable, if a little slower.

I was wondering if I could get a whitelist to the forum server. My Username is Ziploxxx, 3 x! Thanks much.

You should probably post in the Multiplayer thread: http://www.gamerswithjobs.com/node/5...

As someone who has invested (I say invested to make me feel better about spending this much time in a game) almost 300 hours on Terraria, would Minecraft be something that I would like? I really like the 2D and simplicity of Terraria, but the things I've seen on Minecraft look like a ton of fun.

Are people still playing this quite a bit on the GWJ maps? I was hoping to maybe pick this up within the coming week or two, but I was curious if there were any players out there that have played Terraria and maybe have made the move over here, or maybe the other way around that can kind of give some feedback on which one they prefer. I still really like playing Terraria now, but I'm not opposed to venturing out to Minecraft, especially if that's where most of the GWJ people are playing.

I can't say much as far as comparing Minecraft to Terraria, I've only played 10 minutes of Terraria, but I can tell you the GWJ world is fairly active still. I'm on there 20-40 hours a week, so is a friend of mine, and I see a lot of people in and out there. The rail line isn't even fully completed so there's bound to be plenty of activity for awhile yet. And then when it does drop off we'll restart the world to jump start it all over again

Awesome. Thanks! Good to know. I guess I might be picking it up then.

Fun game.
I go back to it all of the time.
I've lost months to it.

Just wait until the current embarrassment of AAA riches: Game Titles, is over.

Definitely come on in! Just head over to the multiplayer thread linked above to get whitelisted and read up on what's up.

Yeah, jump in the pool! I've been building for about two weeks now and I've already lost a week's worth of sleep. Totally worth it. Hope to see you and Ziploxxx there.

Yes, you need it. It's surprisingly relaxing to just dig and dig, then build and build, and be able to look at what you did and say, "Wow, I'm awesome for building that". It's more gratifying than Terreria imho. Terreria has a bit more of a 'plot' but Minecraft is more compelling due to the 3d block aspect.

Yeah, I think I'm gonna buy it today. Gonna buy the gamecard at Walmart. lol. There goes my life.

DaScorpion wrote:

You mean, you're buying it on Xbox 360?

You should be aware that the xbox version is about 6 months behind the PC version in terms of updates.
I'm pretty sure that you cannot log into the GWJ server with the xbox version.
I don't own an xbox, so I don't know much about that side of things.

You are 100% right though. The Xbox version is very far behind and there is no cross-platform play and the Xbox version restricts you to tiny worlds (1000x1000) blocks.

I might suggest PC.

I've been able to get it to run fairly well on my wife's laptop, still with Sphax pure BDcraft texture pack.

You don't need much rig to make it run. Just a little know how, and some patience.

I think getting a PC license would pay off better in the long run. (keep all of your old files before updating, wish I had).

And if you go PC, you can play on the GWJ server.

On a tangental note, Minecraft 360 just became the first XBLA title to top the weekly Live activity charts...Like, ever.

Most impressive.

Yeah, the 360 version is equivalent to the beta 1.8.x PC version, which is over a year ago. They are making progress though. Plus, the 360 maps are not infinite like the PC version. They are limited to the size of a zoomed out map, which is about 50-ish chunks square.

And just to be clear, you CANNOT connect to the GWJ server with the 360 version. They are different games.

No, the gamecard to buy unlock it on the PC. I had cash, so I went that route instead of buying directly online. But I got it yesterday. Didn't have time to play much, only to hop on and make sure it worked. I built me a worktable and a wooden floor around it. And that's it. lol. Hopefully I'll get some more time later to play.

Gonna have to join up in the GWJ map soon.

The PC version is better in every way, except for the fact that the 360 version has couch co-op. If you want to play with your kids, it's a phenomenal experience and loads of fun. You can't do as much in the game, but you can do it together.

Controllers work way better with the Xbox version.

Just throwing this out there but I went to BestBuy a few days ago and found game cards in the PC section for the PC version of Minecraft.

There's a large fenced farm at Spawn. I took two pumpkins to start my own patch, hope that is okay.

Oh, and what attracts piggies now? Wheat no longer does it for them.

Ditto for the chuckens. I thought it was a lag problem.

Edit: Looked it up. According to Minecraft Wiki: "Pigs are only responsive to Carrots, Chickens to wheat seeds or nether wart, with Cows and Sheep still breeding with Wheat)."

Sorry if I caused confusion.

I've never used game cards for anything.
I end up using credit card online.

I was not aware that Mojang had gone that far.

Carrots?! Where do they grow?

Robear wrote:

I don't know if we have any yet.

Looks like they grow, along with potatos in villages. Do we have any natural villages around anymore? Or would we have to find one outside our current range?
