Evil Dead Reboot

I'm not sure how I feal about this, I loved the original three movies, not sure about the reboot. I'll definately go see it, but will reserve judgement till then.

Come get some!

Shut up. Just shut up.

Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell are involved and give tier approval (I believe both are producers) so sounds awesome. Plus it has that hot redhead from Suburgatory!

Why the hate for posting the trailer Grenn?

I'm telling Hollywood to shut up. Not you. I love the franchise. I'm not usually a hater when it comes to reboots, but this looks like all of the horror and none of the charm. Which one of these guys is supposed to be Ash?

I thought that was Cabin in the Woods at first...

I'm withholding judgement on for now as well, but I fear Grenn's got it right.

Part of what made the first one great was that they did it on almost no budget. I'm definitely skeptical about the version depicted here, but trailers can be misleading.

Army of Darkness ruined so much for me that I honestly feel a reboot is kind of welcome. I'm not opposed to a second chance at getting the FULL story arch.

I think it's the girl, given that she appears in one scene to be taking her arm off.

I think I am more behind this 'retelling' than I am with the Robocop that's in development. I'm not going to call it a reboot. You reboot stuff to try and correct something that is broken.

Evil Dead is not broken.

Ugh. Do not like. The original had a lot of gore off-screen and some camp. This one seems like they just made it straight gore (knife to the tongue - yuck) Then again maybe that is what horro is all about these days. I don't watch many horror films.

New "horror" movies rely heavily on gore, that's not to say that gore can't be scary, but mostly it creates a feeling of disgust and revulsion. A good horror movie will use gore, but it will use it and many other things, like atmosphere, and suspense, to convey a feeling of dread, and helplessness to the viewer. I'm hoping that subsequent trailers for this show a very different side of the film, otherwise... *shrug*

Checked out the Robocop remake. Initial reaction: WTF is that?!

I'll watch it. Raimi and Campbell are behind it 100%. I like Diablo Cody. Besides, it's not like it's going to "replace" Evil Dead Classic. You won't be forced to patch your current DVD up to the new version next time to press play.

I've been thinking a lot about the gender swap with Ash and it's helped me appreciate Campbell's Ash as a great dissection of the genre. See, the new girl isn't the swap, Campbell was. Ash is a final girl played by a man; he undergoes all of the distressing trials and loss and in the end he emerges as the lone survivor. With this new version they are giving the final girl role back to a woman.

There's an essay in all this. Once I have the time it's going on the horror blog.

I am not going to get too hurt about it. Evil Dead I and II are about friends from my home town making a movie and they had some good success from. It is about every movie lover's dream coming true.

Let them reboot it. And I see the Delta 88 makes its cameo in the trailer.

The beginning of the first movie really confused me because I watched the Evil Dead series in reverse order as I was growing up.
"Ashley? Who the hell is Ashley?"

Ash becoming a woman is in no way worse than ash becoming a heartless philanderer. It may even be better. I'm still 100% cool.

Alright. In Army of Darkness:

Ash changed character traits so harshly that he was no longer the same character. See: emotionally abusive philanderer.

The original Evil Dead was billed at the time as one of the goriest movies ever made. Scenes in Evil Dead 2 were literal blood baths. Army of Darkness played everything for laughs to suck up to a studio and their money.

Evil Dead 3 was supposed to end with a setup for a post apocalyptic Evil Dead 4. Instead, they made Army of Darkness, which ended

Spoiler:

in the sporting good section of a department store.

I'm sorry for being bitter but I saw the movies in order and expected a proper sequel out of the third movie. The vhs box at the rental store said "horror" on the spine. There was no Internet or Duke Nuke'em to warn me otherwise. A reboot might finally tell the story I hoped to see, and the complaints of this being too gory sounds to me like they finally remembered their roots.

And even if they royally botch this movie, my dvds and video tapes still have the two good movies, ready to watch at any time. Not even Army of Darkness can take that from me, nor this reboot from you.

That is actually the ending to Army of Darkness I originally saw on VHS. The post apocalyptic one, not the spoilered one.

I saw the theatrical release (on vhs) when it was the only release on vhs. I was very excited when the local rental store finally got it.

Then... Well... Yeah. Definitely not Evil Dead 3.

And to keep my position clear, I'm hopeful that a reboot can let the story run properly. That's all.

I suggest you go read Bruce Campbell's book for some perspective.

I thought I recognized her form somewhere. I don't know if I could watch that show anymore if they keep the tree rape in.

Yeeeaah. I know Cabin definitely borrowed elements from Evil Dead to begin with (and on purpose), but this trailer seems to lean directly into lining the two up.

Part of the whole franchise's draw was that it ended up being campy and weird. This attempt to pass it through the overused Gritty and Dark Reboot Machine just makes me make this face - :\

Anyway, pass.

I was kind of hoping they would do the Ash vs Freddy vs Jason movie.

Holy crap that is bloody. NSFW...don't really don't

I was fine until the last scene with the scalpel.

Hot chicks kissing?... Yes!

Yeah, just way to slasher for me.

I honestly feel a little bit good about this. It looks like they're trying to properly "reboot" and go back to their original vision.

I'm not typically a horror fan who loves excessive gore, but even that was a strong element in the first two Evil Dead films. Watch the trailer at your own peril, I guess. I may try to catch this at the actual theater.

I gotta admit, that trailer makes me feel a lot better about this movie.

Now, I will say that the trailer does look fantastic. The first Evil Dead was really quite different from the sequels. Aside from a few darkly comedic moments, which are very, very few, it was an extremely gory horror film. It was not a funny movie. On its own, it did not have a happy ending. The visuals of that trailer were fantastic. And it really seemed to grasp what made the original Evil Dead stand out on its own. Nevertheless, what is the purpose of this? The fans of the series want a sequel that builds upon the trilogy. I want more Ash. I want Evil Dead 4. Evil Dead isn't Evil Dead without Bruce Campbell. The series is about more than a name, it is about a character that goes by the name Ash.

No one that has any association with the original trilogy will see this and think, "I have to see this because it is the Evil Dead!" They are going to look at this and see it because it looks interesting.

There are two video games that continue/add to the story of Bruce Campbell's Ash. I'm going to see it because Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell are behind it, if not doing it themselves. I'm a fan of the series, and I'm quite excited to see it return to horror instead of the action/camp AoD was (even though I love AoD).

I will see it as well as it looks like a very good movie, but I still want an actual sequel.
