Random non sequitur posts catch-all thread

Why is there no Pencon catch-all?!

Because it's impossible to find information even when I break it up annually. I can't imagine how awful it would be if we only had 1 thread. I'm sorry it didn't fit into that name scheme though =)

Watching the Korean Grand Prix this weekend, my mother was surprised when I burst out laughing at the chequered flag. Why did I burst out laughing? Because PSY was waving it.

ARRGH, first GP I missed this season since starting watching F1, and turns out it was the best.

Race was a cracker, but this season has been one for the ages. It's been very competitive.

Yeah, from everything I've read it seems like I couldn't have picked a better year to start watching.

Probably not. It's one of the best seasons since the Senna/Prost days. In the Schumacher years there were a couple of seasons where Schumacher had a challenger and was even beaten, but it wasn't too exciting. Since Schumi's retirement each season has basically been dominated by one driver.

Hopefully it stays up to this standard for a while.

A guy in a duster on horseback just went galloping down my street. Between this, the elk I've seen walking down the street, and wolves and foxes popping out between houses it's hard to believe I'm just a few minutes out of Denver. Well, light pollution aside anyway.

This is what I pictured.

Someone please do a better Photoshop.

I wouldn't want to mess with perfection.

I'm a little giddy. Bill Harris asked to write something for Dubious Quality!

Heh, yeah. Bit intimidated, I haven't written in years.

Nice, congrats!

I just saw my urinal neighbor leave without washing his hands, walk into our under construction office and start eating his sandwiches.

Yuck.

We should have a thread for ridiculous game pitches.

My train of thought on this RE recent podcasts, events, and discussions:
-old franchises being revived. ie Xcom, Eternity being a bit like a BG revival...
-PC gamer podcast polled the speakers on what they'd like to see revived
-Was thinking of some old titles that haven't seen much attention lately.
-Was looking for anything I haven't seen on Netflix and found Terra Nova.

Thought it might make a good game setting. Turok-like maybe.
It has a neat blend of Sci Fi, adventure, shooting, stealth opportunities, and of course dinosaurs.
Who doesn't want to fight, tame, ride, or build saddle like chariots out of dinosaurs?

Was Turok in 2008 any good?

Edit - FTFY no longer applies

Was it any good?
And it was the social context of Terra Nova that interested me.
I started picturing Deus Ex like missions to the other civilizations.
I also imagined wilderness play like in DayZ.
Hell, while we're at it, we may as well make it a failed civilization, and make it Fallout 3 junk punk in a parallel time stream. With sparkle ponies.

...seriously though.

Turok released in 2008. Console only from what I can tell. Probably why I missed it. That's the birth of the second child, and a difficult time in my career.

I played the first two on the N64, and they were fun. I didn't play any of the later ones though.

My wife and I just watched the first half of the pilot. I thought it had potential.

My wife hated it in it's entirety.

It wasn't the show itself that bothered, but the whole premise ("civilization f*cks up the planet, moves to another one to begin the whole thing over again"). She couldn't even start to appreciate any part of the actual show.

So I haven't masturbated and had no sex in 2 weeks. Not a conscious decision, but I was like 2 days without "nothing" and I went "Wonder what would happen if I didn't do anything for a while, will I become super smart or something". It's just like a willpower thing I suppose, wonder if I can go for a month (probably not)

So far, nothing special, feels like I'm 14 again with getting random boners just by sitting around just doing nothing... I don't feel particularly smart either. I've had some great workouts at least, wonder if it's related.

In another week you'll get telekenetic powers.

Two weeks? No solo joy-joy time? My. God. Recently, the most I've gone without happy-slappy is five days.

Also, you've had great workouts? Hmm. Some athletes refuse sexual activity before competitions, but I don't think there is anything to that.

I did two weeks once; it was similar to Mex - I just wanted to see if I could manage.

It's funny to revisit the N64 Turok games today. There's so much fog! They did it to up the frame rate, of course, but I always thought it added nicely to the overall atmosphere.

If you want to find out what happens, ask a married friend who's a relatively new dad.

Barenaked Ladies post-Steven Page just aren't as good as Barenaked Ladies with Steven Page. It feels kinda like the way they wandered with Maybe You Should Drive.

I admit that it doesn't come off as particularly strong. I just about sh*t canned it when the son threw his hissy fit.
I do, however, allow A LOT of latitude in quality for sci-fi TV. I'm willing to give it another episode or two.

This is interesting.
My wife has a particularly sheltered and rosy outlook. She won't watch anything that makes her uncomfortable. I'll be watching a discovery documentary on death, and she can't understand. She would just rather not think about it. Me on the other hand; I have to think about it, but in an experimental way. Kind of the same way, I believe, you have to do stupid stunts and teenager to learn just where the limits are. You can perform at a higher level when you know this sort of thing. How far can I go before I'm really in danger? How far can I go before I really need to be afraid?

I also like to think that gaming; video, and role playing is this kind of experimentation. What would the world be like if I were this person, or had these ideals, or was a religious zealot - otherwise known as a cleric.

I've had to challenge her to overcome outrageous fear that she was taught. Like, flying, bees, etc. She's flown hundreds of times but still can't deal with not being the one in control. I've had to point out to her that, you've done this ten times this year, and everything worked out fine, why wouldn't you start assume its going to go as well as it can, instead of the opposite. Why suffer a plane crash every time you fly, instead of just the time it happens; if it happens.

Or she's been stung by bees because she was freaking out, jumping around, and flapping her hands. Yet she can watch me let bees walk on me and never get stung. I would go, "hey that looks like it works, I think I'll try that".

I don't get it.

She is probably fully aware that her fears of flying and bees, and her reactions to those things, are completely irrational. Thus just explaining, "Hey, that doesn't make sense, stop doing it" isn't going to help at all.

I can relate since I have similar fears and am totally aware of the irrationality. It's one of those things that a brain can do to a person since we're not creatures driven by pure reason

Your wife has better survival instincts than you do*, she just lives in a time/place where that's more of a burden than a blessing.
*Hers are better than mine too, I'm much more like you.
