Ran a 5K today

Injured..... I have achilles tendinitis on my left leg. I tried running a measly 4 miles yesterday. I had to stop at 2.5 miles. I could have pushed through but I was already close to home and decided not to hurt it more. Iced it and wore a compression sock last night.

I was already injured last week but a friend wanted to start a exercise regime with me. I did okay then we went for a sprint and that just killed it.

Then yesterday I was feeling a bit better and wanted to go for a run. Part of my run was a hill under a bridge. Again I really felt the soreness going up that hill.

More ice, rest, calf stretches and less running for a while. This sucks because running is my favorite form of exercise. I like being outside and I don't feel I get as hard of a workout biking or swimming.

As someone who ran his left achilles into tendinosis last year, I feel your pain.
I recommend babying it for a little bit and finding out what's causing it, rather than running on through...

So, just started using the couch to 5k app on my Iphone today to get my body up to being able to do a 5k. Not sure I'll ever actually run one, other than on the treadmill or outside.

Awesome! Enjoy! Congrats. I like C25k and have gone through it a few times.

Also, if you like this sort of thing, the Zombies, Run! team have put out a starting running app, so you can get fit and ARG w/ Zombies at the same time.

Yes, congrats. I'll say the normal stuff, e.g., you can do it, really. My wife and I started the C25K app in August, maybe, and have completed two 5Ks. Our times aren't competitive, and if I keep running I'll start challenging my pace. But we finished. We brought our 8-year-old to the second one, and he ran almost the whole way (a 20-second break about 60% of the way). He's an Energizer bunny.

I need to get back on the horse. Haven't done any running in 1.5 weeks, and only a little light cycling. I'm working from home now so I don't have the commute forcing me to ride. Must. Grow. Discipline.

Just saw this while watching The Walking Dead last night (AMC's web site):

Lots of events around the country. Next May, it's in Ohio, in Hocking Hills, potentially near the Ravenwood castle.

That looks like awesome fun!

So, is there a way to use that Zombies, Run! thing and not bring a phone with you? That seems like great fun, but I really just want the audio of each mission.

It would probably involve some hackery or an ipad touch. The GPS features are optional, so you don't need data or GPS, but you do need a device running android or ios. An old phone might be your best bet if you don't want to risk getting an expensive phone wet. (I've been running w/ my phone for a few years now, snack-size ziplock bags keep even the most pervasive Northwest rain at bay.)

Good to know. Is this something that is more fun with a couple people? I would imagine it would be a blast. I may get a water resistant case for my Lumia 900 specifically for this. I wouldn't mind carrying it around if I was with a group.

Speaking of rain. Nobody responded to my question about Merrell minimal shoes on the previous page. I think it was Tanglebones that mentioned using them. Do they run wide/narrow? I'll probably just have to order 10.5 regulars (the water resistant ones I want don't have a wide flavor) and hope for the best. They usually make it easy/free to return shoes if you order them online. I don't know what store carries them in Portland if any.

I'm not sure about their narrow/wide options. I've got a pretty standard sized foot, so the regular width works well for me. I've got a pair of their minimal cap-toe shoes, and they're extremely comfortable.

I got my replacement running headphones back from Sony today and promptly put the Double Dragon Neon soundtrack on it. I just got back from running, and here is my review.

Pros: *does air guitar solo*
Cons: You will run really fast.
You may punch the air at times which can be awkward.

Crotch Solo Rating: 10/10

Sooo--totally listened to this soundtrack at the gym today. What was hilarious was that I was kind of slagging during my run, then Space Dojo 2 started. I suddenly felt like I was in an 80s training montage and found a second wind. Ended up breaking a personal best for 3 miles--28:27. Not amazingly fast, I know, but just getting to three miles without dying is an improvement.

Also realized that listening to that soundtrack completely destroys my normal pace, so that might have to go at the END of my playlist for a bit of a jump

Sweet FSM on a tricycle, that soundtrack should be illegal. Either that or it should be on permanent rotation in Joe Biden's Trans Am. {air guitar solo}

Week 5 Day 3 of C2k5 tomorrow morning. No more walking breaks just Shut Up And Run. Should be informative.

Well, Sunday is the day of this relay marathon, so here's hoping I make it all the way through. The goal is to just be able to run/jog the whole time and not have to walk at all. I'm not so much worried about time as I am about just getting to the finish line.

It's pretty rough, though--everything starts super early in the morning (5am), but I'm running the last leg, so I basically get to sit around for a couple hours until it's my turn to go. I hope I don't fall asleep or something before it's my turn to go

Good luck! Pasta like spaghetti is usually good for the day before a race.

Thanks for the tip, I'll stuff my face on Saturday

Top tip - don't stuff your face too much. Eat a hearty meal, but don't go overboard. You don't want to overburden your stomach - the goal is to have digested all of that and hopefully pooped it back out before you start running.

Then have a light snack a couple of hours before the race. A banana, or some peanut butter on half a bagel.

Here is a tip my brother gave me.

When you get to the start line, go to the bathroom. Once you are done, get back in line and go again.

Well, the marathon came and went. Ended up getting through the whole 4.4 miles without stopping! WOOOOO! Ended up with a time of 44:38, which is A LOT faster than I thought I was going to do.

...And now I can't wait to do another one

That's rad!

Sweet! My suggestion for your next go round would be a 10k; it's an extra mile and a half on what you just did, a nice modest increase in distance.

If you've got till the end of november, that should provide ample time to rest a week and then add mileage.

So I managed the 20 minute Week 5 run on Saturday morning. 3.5k all up. I reckon with a little mental discipline I could have made the whole 5k. Feeling pretty chuffed about that.

2 weeks to go until the charity run.

Yeah that's what I was thinking too actually. I also don't think it would be that much of a stretch to go that route either--I was pretty winded/tired by the end of my leg, but not so much that I couldn't have kept going. Only problem I see is that the next 10k is a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving. Not sure if that is too soon to try another marathon. :(. I might end up just doing the 5k on that.

Awesome side note, coming down the back stretch I did end up queuing up the DD soundtrack and found some hidden cache of energy to push forward. Unfortunately though the increased movement from the run jacked with my headphones and so the music cut out a few feet from the finish

Seriously, though...that soundtrack is amazing for really pushing yourself on the run.

Kudos, Maq. Sounds like you're getting into that phase where progress is really fast and when you get your first runner's highs (I hope).

Bah, I wouldn't get too down on yourself, Maq. At least you're running consistantly! Plus, it'll still give you the motivation to keep pushing yourself. Keep it up, man!

According to Urban Dictionary, I think you might have it backwards. And given that C25k is a 10week program, he's in a pretty good spot.

So I do--totally read that wrong. My bad! Apparently I need to brush up on my British slang

I'd make the effort to find a store that sells them. Trying on shoes in person is ten times better, especially for running shoes, where the slightest miscalculation will slowly wear at you over the miles.

Achilles injury update.

After a week and a half off of running, I have healed to the point where I ran 3.5 miles yesterday without issues. What worked is that I wore a compression sock. This helped immensely. I still have tenderness in my achilles but it did not hurt while running nor does it hurt while walking.

I got the sock from my father-in-law but it is one of those that cut off before the toes. During my run I felt the seam. If I ran 5 miles I probably would have stopped from the seam rubbing on my foot.

Because of this seam I want to buy my own. Has anyone else used compression socks/sleeves while running. Which ones do you recommend?
