Ascension (iOS) Gaming League (New Tourney starting Jan 14, 2013!)

Honestly, I think I screwed up with the whole ties count thing. I'm thinking one match versus an opponent and more rounds would have been better. Thoughts? I like that everyone gets to play every week but it's still taking a lot of time.

I appreciate you're asking for feedback. I don't have an opinion on it really, other than I think I preferred 3 games to 2 games.

Oddly not received- I'll send one your way.

Good game Mudbunny!

I thought you had me on that last game, it felt like I was chasing you for most of it!

I snuck ahead on my last turn, thanks to Emri.

Final score 76 to 62 in my favour.

Chumpy steals game 1 (as in, some - 3, I think - extremely fortunate centre draws on the last turn) to rout oily 70-69 in game 1!

What?

Nice games tonight, LeapingGnome! (We tied, one game apiece.)

Seems like the games were kind of mirror images of one another. In game 1, I couldn't get anything going at all while you were having some huge turns; then, game 2 was kind of the reverse, where I was able to thin my deck early and repeatedly cycle through some powerful cards quickly to grab a big lead.

Regarding the tournament format, I'm enjoying it so far! This is my first one so I don't have anything to compare it to, but to me, it seems like the right amount of gaming each week -- not too much, not too little. It does help when I manage to catch my opponent online (or vice-versa) and we're able to move through one of the games quickly.

It doesn't seem that my invite has been accepted yet. Even though I'm second, I was going to start the game but don't see that as an option at first. IT can be easy to miss Game Center invites and such, so I'm guessing that happened?

Rob, did you send a GC to demonbox or Farktopia? His GC name is farktopia.

Srsly. I cheered; my wife asked me what the hell I was doing.

Funny, this is exactly how I feel in most of the friendly games Chumpy and I have been playing since our official matches. It's been a series of friendly arse-kickings, but at least I know losing the round to him wasn't a fluke.

Sorry, dixie.

(I'm really enjoying the throwback game, by the way; if it was accidental, awesome - if it was on purpose, good call!)

Indeed I did send the invite to demonbox and not farktopia. I even thought I had checked with the spreadsheet linked from page 19 of this thread so that's, er, worrying. New GC invite sent (I think!) to farktopia (thx bigred). To add to the oddness I don't seem to have any GC invites waiting for me to accept.

No worries! It's been humbling, but good fun, and I obviously need to keep honing my SoS skills. I figured the CotG/RotF game would make a good change of pace and give me half a chance of winning a few back.

Apollo took our first game convincingly at 75-49, the second is underway.

After losing the first game 73-64, I snuck in a win in the second game 72-71 on the back of a huge last turn.

Heartly7 and I finishe our games up last night, this time I came out ahead. GG!

Also: sigh, another split decision. I'm destined to tie my way through this tournament (when I'm not outright losing...)

Yeah I was thinking that too, I smashed you then you smashed me back. That second game I saw it coming and tried to switch to monsters to build up a point lead because I knew you would have the card lead but then you got the militia constructs and kept up with me.

I managed to tie up my set with Apollo, taking the second game 69-47. Good games Apollo!

I prefer best 2 out of 3. Also, for time sake, the max time a full 3 game match would be 6 days with 1 day timers, vs the 12 days of max time with 2 games of 3 day timers.

I would prefer 2 out of 3 with an increase in the timer given how I've had two forfeits due to clock expiration... Based on what I've seen here (and with informal Netrunner online tournaments) it's not surprising that this doesn't move at a fast pace. I don't think the Qt3 vs. GWJ challenge moved too fast either.

Netrunner? As in this Netrunner? I've always wanted to try that. Where can you play it online?

Not sure what the current preferred client is, but there was a group of us playing online with Magic WorkStation and a customized library for it. Worked but was prone to disconnects

I would like to play 3 games, but I'm fine if the score is reported as is now. I like the feel of being able to say I beat this person or that, but I like how the win-loss ratio is actually playing against the whole group. A swiss-whatever with 3 games would work great for this.

I'm not comfortable with a 1 day limit. I don't get cell reception in my office. If my game starts when I can't get the notice, I move, and then the other person moves sometime when I'm asleep then I can very easily see that I'm going to forfeit from no fault of my own.

Also I won our first match and waiting for the rematch invite to start the second.

I agree that a one day limit is too likely to result in a forfeit unless games are scheduled - but doing the scheduling and then playing could end up up using just as much time as a 3 day timer game. The 3 day limit does seem to be working fine here.

Meanwhile I did lose my first game (as usual) against you, demonbox - nicely judged at 66-63. I sent a new invite (using rematch) as soon as the first one completed and ... ah, you have accepted. So now I have started it and let's see if I can do my usual and win the second game.

I like the format. Being the first elimination in the last league sucked ballz big time.

I felt a disconnect from the whole process after that.

This way, even if you lose, you know you are still 'getting a game'. I have no problem with the matches being 'out of two' or 'out of three'. I like 'out of two' more as it really captures the luck undertones of the whole game.

robthomasson wrote:

And indeed that happened 72-53. So once again I lose the first game and win the second. Thanks to demonbox for two interesting games, though somehow the second was just that bit more interesting.

You kicked my tail pretty handily the second game- good show. Also, I'm not sure the pattern but I've also now lost half (won half) of all my games.

Okay, I'm finally bored with Guild Wars. Hurry up and finish now, 10 minute matches the rest of the way, that's the ticket! Dishonored will only hold me so long and I don't think there's anything else I'm interested in this year; maybe that Towns thing I should try, yea. GC Ventripotent if you want any side games!

Good games indeed! My not buying Mystic cards at the beginning REALLY bit me in the butt towards the end! Final score for that game was 69 to 80

That was a weird round since the central deck didn't send out many monsters and I don't think an event card appeared for the entire round.
