Soccer Gaming Catch-All

Yeah it is strange - I think the first time I got injured the rest of the game was simmed. Maybe the next time I was subbed I just hit continue on an option screen that I didn't read properly, but I can't find any mention of it - either as a feature, or a bug...

Another issue I seem to be having, and it may just be the PC version, but in pre-match reports, manager reports etc, my name is missing. It'll say things like
" is having a good run of form. The manager hopes can keep it up" with my name (presumably) missing from the start of the quote, and in between the words "hopes" and "can". I haven't had a chance to bug-search for that one yet though..

That happens in mine too. Also every time I play an international it's my debut apparently.

I can't agree more. I had a look yesterday after being subbed if I could just switch the game to full AI in the controller select screen but you can't access that screen from the pause menu. I don't know if you can do it by turning your controller off which automatically brings up the controller select screen as that didn't occur to me until now.

If you get sent off, the rest of the match is just simmed. Should be the same for sub

Yeah, this is a pain. I play on the second to hardest mode as a pro because it seems manageable as your teammates are good too. The second I have to play as the team I go into siege, defensive mode cause I'm not great at playing defense.

You should be able to finish most games without getting subbed. If you find yourself getting subbed a lot check your use of the sprint trigger. I thinks its purely based on how much gas you have left in the tank.

accepted, and most matches are fine, but in league 2 with dagenham (on loan) plus cup and internationals, the fixure list is pretty jammed and I rarely start a match with a full bar. if there's a break for a few days, it's fine and I last the match.

My only other experience of Be a Pro was in NHL 12, but it's a totally different ball game (as it were) and you're constantly on and off the rink. Just seems strange that in some cases, the rest of the match is simmed, and in others, you suddenly control the whole team. A little inconsistant, at least.

Still, helluva fun though!

Sorry to double-post, but if you use either of these codes:

GMGFM-C7BEY-U0PMY or ACKTE-RHATT-RICKS (additional 35% off)

on GMG, you can get FM2013 pre-purchase for £19.50

This also gives you access to the 'beta' that will be released about two weeks before the release date of 2nd November.

How expensive is FM in retail in UK? Because that sounds crazy-cheap.

£30 at Amazon and most similar outlets. I just can't muster any enthusiasm for it this year.

Oh, thought it would be more expensive. It's not much cheaper in here (around £20).
Still, hearing of possibility of buying something online as cheap as in retail sounds weird - with Steam and it's pan-European pricing model, usually retail is literally twice as cheap.

RRP is £39.99, but I seriously doubt anywhere will actually be that price.

Still, £19.50 is a bargain in my book for what can potentiall be hundreds of hours of entertainment. As for mustering enthusiasm, I skipped 2012, so this should be a considerable step forward for me. Every second year seems about right for changes. If I really _needed_ the latest squad members, there are plenty of community updates that take care of that.

From what I've read so far, there are quite a few changes from 2011. I'm not sure what I make of the 'lite' mode though...

I picked up FM13 on GMG using the previously posted code. Price was $30 USD (which was 9.99 off retail).

They should introduce an upgrade SKU, where you use last year's license key to get a 50% discount or something.

The latest FIFA update made my version a lot more unstable. Crowd noise gets super choppy, and the autosave function gets funky.

I've been trying to find a changelist for the latest update, but haven't managed to so far. All I know is it didn't fix any of the bugs I'm seeing. Sad face.

Tried the latest PES Demo, and if there's anything FIFA has on it, it's accessibility. I don't think anyone at Konami understands the concept of "tutorial". The Performance Training tutorial is an act of open hostility against novice players. The "perfect trap" drill is the kind of thing someone with no concept of easing people into understanding a game would create.

First, trap the ball just as it arrives. Then turn, and fire a shot from outside the box into the net. Also there are two defenders closing you down. Also there's a goalie. Also you're not sure how to aim. And you can't just get it on net, you have to score. On the volley. From 25 yards out. With two men closing you down and trying to block the shot. And a goalie.

This is in a TRAINING exercise to teach you a basic command. It's like teaching someone to ride a bicycle by putting them on at the top of a large hill on a road bike, giving them a push and shouting "good luck!". Also, there's oncoming traffic.

Konami desperately needs someone to explain what a "tutorial" is to them. For the last three years, they've basically been making games with the understanding that anyone who picks them up already has mastered the controls. It's astonishing in its stupidity. You're literally turning away players at the word go.

If I can spend 20 minutes cranking away at a basic training drill, y'know, i'm willing to accept i'm not good at certain games, but at a certain point, the game itself is failing to instruct me correctly, or (as I think is likely) you've created a ridiculously over-complex control scheme better. (The knuckle shot. Hit X, and then hit X as you strike the ball. Take note your window for the correct input here is basically a millisecond. FUN.) If I could manage to learn Falcon 4.0 or be basically proficient at Virtua Fighter, the fact that so many of the controls are so difficult is a gigantic failure on the Dev's part.

(Oh also, you only get to learn later training skills by passing previous ones. Wanna learn a sombrero flick? F*CK YOU first do our only-if-you-get-lucky trap drill first! It's like a mini-game for masochists.)

Seriously, it's like Konami has decided to reward everyone who stuck with the series, and said a hearty F*CK YOU to everyone else.

So career mode update. My guy (a CAM) was called up to the US national team for the 2014 world cup at the last minute! I was super pumped as I've only played one other friendly and haven't had any first league experience (on lone from Arsenal in 2012 to Walsall in npwoer league 1 and to Leicester City nPower Championship). I'm wondering if FIFA just decided you have to be on the roster for the World Cup or people will get pissed. Anyway, I start the first match vs England. Rooney scores early but 10 minutes later I send a through ball to Altidore for the equalizer. Then in the 67th minute I get a ball at the top of the box, somehow dribble past two players (I don't usually take people on except for on the flanks) and then somehow when tackled by the CB I hold onto the ball while stumbling, spin around the final (4th defender) and slot a ball in. Imagine the Steve Young touchdown run but with a soccer ball and through multiple defenders. I did a huge soccer slide onto the rug in my apt screaming, it was awesome!

Anyway, I'm benched against Hungary for a 2-2 tie, play against Peru but don't perform all that well in a 2-2 tie. We advance but I don't make the team for the qualifying round and we lose 5-1 to Spain. One thing I want to call out is that after the qualifying rounds, you go back to your club for a week and then get called back for the elimination rounds if your team makes it. I was flipping out after the Peru game when it said "return to your club" and I'm wondering why it won't even let me sim out the remaining games from the bench. All was well when they called me back a week later...and then benched me and forced me to sim the loss.

Anyways, season 3 started with a bang as I finally made the Arsenal first team. 4 goals and 4 assists in the first 4 games (one for the copa europe in a win against euro champions Bayern). Game is so addicting.

@Newt and other Xbox players. Should we have a meetup some night for a few pro club matches? My guy is still a noob but I'd love to play with non-randos who hog the ball and then shoot from 30 yards out trying to pad their stats. I still can't believe FIFA hasn't implemented a party system for non-club games.

I love this idea. I also like the idea of forming a GWJ Pro Club...if there is interest. I am west coast but can usually free up in the afternoons for a game or two during weekdays. Weekends are tougher.

You're right bout the training, Pred. It's... problematic, to put it mildly.

I'm central time. I'm not traveling for work this or next week so I can play on weeknights. Otherwise it has to be on weekends when I'm not traveling.

My worry is we don't have enough players interested to make this fun. I'd say 3-7 would be ideal.

I am unavailable next week but should otherwise be available most weekdays. My best window of gaming is probably 5 to 6 pm PST weekdays.

Yeah, my name is also missing on the screens that have news about my player.

and every international appearance is still my debut...

I'm not too familiar with EA games - are they any good at issueing patches/fixes? or is it pretty much WYSIWYG until next year?

FIFA is usually supported pretty well. On which console are you seeing this?

I am confused.

Oh the feature creep that is private chats. In a situation like that I'd just take up an angry tone, try to release Bullard anyway regardless of the resolution of the chat.

I've used the private chats more than I use press conferences (always the assistant) or commenting on the opposition managers (only for important games) but other than tutoring and preferred moves I don't see the utility of them. I would prefer if tutoring/prefer moves required fewer clicks but you can say that about much of the interface at this point. I get amused when I have an upset player that I can't calm down, they put in a transfer request that is accepted, and then they come crawling back a couple of months later requesting to stay with the club even though I've done absolutely nothing to sell them.

Just picked up FIFA 12 for free with that EA Origin deal going this weekend.

Wasted a couple hours playing single matches as Everton (figured Tim Howard would keep me safe in goal when I screw up), and started the Ultimate Team thing and played a couple single matches to get some coins and buy some better players. That's a very weird mode. Not entirely sure what I'm doing there.

Honestly I don't follow the leagues all that much. I enjoy the World Cup. I don't have a ton of strategy knowledge or anything else. It asked me if I was a beginner and I said I was. Finished the basic defense tutorials, only repeating a couple.

Won most of my games tonight, anywhere from 1-0 to 4-1. Seems fun.

Is the Be a Pro or whatever it's called mode good in 2012? Should I try that out and get better at the game?

I think I'd like to just play the normal season mode in Premier League or something. I always enjoy dynasty/franchise mode in most sports games. But I wasn't sure where that option is even. Trying to select what I thought was season play took me to some kind of store where you can buy access to replay the games of real leagues. Don't really care about that, want to make my own stuff.

Anyway, not too sure how deep I'll get into this. But it was definitely pick up and play enough for me to have fun for a few hours tonight.

I'm sure everyone's on about FIFA 13 in this thread, but any advice on 12 would be welcome. And if anyone's on PC, my Origin ID is Stele, so friend me up and you can probably destroy me.

Mr Bismarck

If I read your conversation correctly, I think that it demonstrates the different player reactions to 2 different circumstances.

Bullard wants to leave the club, but via a sale to another one - he's still under contract (and hence getting paid) and IRL a player also receives a share of whatever fee is paid for him, which might also be modelled here.

What you have suggested is a contract termination, presumably at zero. Therefore there is no ongoing payment, you've effectively sacked him.

And Roke, the reason players sometimes come crawling back is because they are still at your club..i.e no one else wants them either (at least not for whatever fee you have set). So you have actually done something to sell them (by agreeing their request and hence making other clubs aware that they are for sale at a stipulated price), but if no one is biting, then they may well have no option if they actually want to play.

Isn't that right, Mr Tevez ?

Yeah, Dave's dead-on. A Mututal Termination means no more paychecks, effective immediately, and he doesn't get a cut of the sale price. Knowing that, I think most players would try to force a transfer but try and hang around the club and keep getting their weekly pay-packets as well.

Besides, that conversation makes perfect sense but only in magical realm of football player formal logic. Statements of such system might seem awfully similar to statements of normal logic and even present themselves as something human might say but make no mistake, they've been produced by soulless AI that is a modern footballer. There is only one possible statement in football player logic:
1) I'd be really great to have some extra money, "boss",
and all the different text strings that you see are simply means of obfuscation and embellishment.

Viewing things through this lens, you should navigate world of player conversation with considerable ease.
