Roberts Space Industries - Chris Roberts of Wing Commander and Privateer fame

Well, my thought process follows that Chris Roberts states that in multi-player, you can "do what you want", which is essentially Eve. Eve has very little rules that restrict the player base. You want to be a pirate, fine, be pirate and prey on other PCs. It hasn't been stated that Star Citizen (or whatever) is soley PvE. So if that is indeed true, you'll be having PC pirates preying on PC traders. That type of vicious environment can make Eve not fun.

I'd say this is more like Jumpgate, which was basically Elite/Privateer, the MMO.

Sounds more like Evochron or Freelancer in implementation to me. Yes the same ideas are in Eve but the implementation is vastly different.

With regards to my own question, from the RPS interview/preview?

And that’s just the start. If Roberts manages to implement all the features he wants, Star Citizen will be one of the greatest space games ever. You’ll be able to host your own universes for instance, as in Freelancer, mod or add your own spaceships and submit them to the main game for other people to buy. You’re never going to be able to sell the Starship Enterprise as a carrier in the main game, but in your own universe? Just don’t tell Paramount.

I like this!

Wait, I thought this *wasn't* using Kickstarter?!

It's not using Kickstarter.com, but it's obviously using the same fundamental mechanics. I'd guess Roberts would rather not pay their fees when he can just roll his own and stand on his history.

The other big difference (I think) between this and Kickstarter is that this one is asking for your money now, and Kickstarter doesn't ask for your money until the project is funded. Here, you have to tick the extra box that says give me my money back if the funding goal isn't met - implying that otherwise, he'll keep your money and use it anyway...

This sounds amazing and as a massive Wing Commander fanboy, I really want to support it but what Roberts is envisioning is incredibly ambitious to put it mildly. PC only, graphics that will require a beast of a machine, single player campaign but also an huge MMO that will have no subscription fees and he wants more up front than Obsidian does to make a whole game and that's just to be able to tap other investors to get a lot more money so he can finish it. His vision is incredible and if he can even half-realise it, the game will be stunning and I'd probably upgrade my rig just to be able to get the most out of it. It's tough to decide how much I'd put into it though. I almost immediately jumped to the $60 tier but now I'm pausing for a while to think about it first.

Which is what a number of developers did before Kickstarter anyway. Besides, even when a KS campaign meets its goal you're still taking a chance on the game never seeing the day of light.

Due to the overwhelming response to our campaign launch, the main site robertsspaceindustries.com is currently overloaded. We expect it to be accessible again shortly, but in the meantime please use this site to back the project with one of the pledges listed below. Thank you for your support!

The website is down at times. 159k already raised. Looking for 2.000.000$US....
I will sit back and wait a bit. Already have my gold ticket.
Also, I have a laptop that I use for gaming.
So I don't think it is going to be playable at all for me. Maybe when I have a
desktop again. Somewhere in the future.

Yeah but a kickstarter will only fund based on what they had predicted they will get. These guys want, what?, $12M and yet if they achieve nowhere near that what's the plan?

[edit] I really want to be able to contribute and buy in to this project but they are just too thin on the ground for me at this point combined with their really crappy backer tiers...

I think that's a good reality check, although I really want what they're offering, it's extremely ambitious.

I believe I read somewhere that they have funding (being used to start the work) and are using this as a gauge to allow getting more funding. The way I read it (could be wrong!) is that if they get $2MM via this method they will get the other $10-12MM.

I am semi-excited by this but will wait and see how it goes. I am sure they will be happy to sell it to me for full price in 2015 or whenever it comes out (sure they say 2014, but...).

I'm trying to figure out what the Golden Ticket is good for now.Or course, the site's down, so I can't read it anymore, but any ideas?

Sorry, Chris Roberts already used up his accumulated goodwill after the disappointments of StarLancer and the Wing Commander movie. Sure, I like space opera, but it'll take some convincing before I give him my money again.

I'm more concerned about how this won't die on the vine from lack of support like, I don't know, EVERY other attempt to make an MMO Space Sim? I'm sure Veloxi can count the number of these that have been attempted and died due to lack of support from the market. Not that I don't love the idea of a good version of Jumpgate, or an MMO of Privateer. I just don't see the financial support being there. It's ridiculously ambitious.

It will be interesting to see the game mechanics decisions they make and what they take from other MMOs.

I wonder if most of the Freespace devs are still working at Volition, or even if they've tried to hire some of the people behind some of the FSOpen and it's mods.

O

God, I'd give A LOT to make Freespace 3 happen. Holy crap.

I want Elite back!

You could wait for...*snort*...Elite 4...HAHAHAHAH...haha, I'm sorry, I just can't say that without both laughing and crying just a little.

Why's that? I recently saw some good news.

Ouch. That was downright cruel.

Still would like an epic space sim of this nature, but I'm not throwing money into the hat this far out on such a project. I wish them the best of luck, and would probably buy it, though.

X-Rebirth is only a couple of years behind schedule...

As an old Elite Junkie, I was quite happy to let X3:TC swallow my life for while back there

If they really want to support all kinds of input, one of those 3D controllers would be awesome.

The thing about EVE is that to a certain extent you need the lows with the highs, but it has systems to deal with the lows, so a lot of times it's either a trivial set-back or punishing you for being dumb and taking a huge risk without backing yourself up, and if you're at the point where you are taking those huge risks you really should know better.

I see this as DayZ in space. I want to roll with a GWJer run freighter in my nimble fighter. Thirty bucks pledged. This looks like it could be pretty great.

Now offering a Kickstarter

I ponied up yesterday. Freelancer ate my soul back in 2003-2004. If it's more like that, count me in - just shut up and take my $60.

I just ponied up a couple hours ago--not sure why...It's not like I *really* have the money available. However--Chris Roberts. Wing Commander. You can't explain that.
