This reminds me... didn't Tkyl promise to share with us how to skip intro vids?

In XCOM's install folder (In my case, C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonXCom-Enemy-Unknown) and go through to XCom-Enemy-UnknownXComGameConfig and open up "DefaultEngine.ini" in a text editor like Notepad.
Under the header ; PC Startup movies (CTRL + F for quicker access), delete the "+" before the 4 entries there. Save and start XCOM and the movies should be gone.

Rather than edit something that Steam will eventually reset, you can do the same thing in \Users\user\Documents\My Games\XCOM - Enemy Unknown\XComGame\Config\XComEngine.ini

Search for StartupMovies and put a ; in front of each of those lines.

Edit: Switched out '#' for ';' per Tkyl.

WHen you switch weapons - this is in demo - it's confusing that the positions of the weapons on the interface don't change, nor does their relative brightness to each other. Instead you see the name of the weapon you're using appear and an almost-impercetible rectangle around them. But this can end up with the words 'Sniper rifle' above a pistol icon. (I like how clear the icons for weapons are incidentally.)

Normally position and/or icon and/or brightness and/or highligting is used to show changing weapons. I think something like that would be useful here. I know there have been some articles about objects facing right (in photos or whatever) apparently having more 'impact' to viewers, so I'd perhaps have the active weapon on the right, lowering the brightness of the swapped weapon on the left.

Because, you know, I'm an expert at backseat UI directions. And it's not like the game is available or anything.

When you stun an enemy, do you have to do anything else to capture it? I completed the containment facility, then took down a sectiod and thin man in the next mission, but there doesn't seem to be anything to show they were brought back. No messages, nothing new on the research tree, etc.

My power systems analysis prof just cancelled class because he was "sick." That's just a coincidence, right?

I did not need to do anything. When I would get back to base, I always got a congratulations pep-talk from the good doctor. You can go to grey market and see if they are available for sale. I think you can sell live aliens if you have them. You should certainly be able to "research" them.

I think that if they are properly stunned during the mission, they'll lie there on the ground with some amount of hp left and a little thunder bolt icon (electricity?) next to their name.

I am definitely an Assault.

This. I've messed up a few rounds because I forgot I had my pistol equipped instead of my sniper rifle. I 'should' of made sure I had the right weapon, but something a little more in your face might be nice.

Still enjoying it though, so no worries.

Did you by chance hit them with an explosion after you stunned them? If so, they ended up dying before the mission ended.

Nope. Just walked up and zapped them.

I can't download the manual to my pad. Say's Safari can't do it? Anyone have ideas on this?
Thx

Was the mission a success? I had to abort one mission and it left my stunned aliens behind.

This might be the weirdest installation from disk experience I've ever had. Anyone else pick this up in hard copy and attempt to install it? Things are being "installed" freakishly slow through Steam, not sure what is happening to be honest.

I know the pre-load didnt work out so well. I ended up having to delete the preload and then shut down steam before it would work.

This might be the weirdest installation from disk experience I've ever had. Anyone else pick this up in hard copy and attempt to install it? Things are being "installed" freakishly slow through Steam, not sure what is happening to be honest.

EDIT: now thinking I might have lemon discs OR I'm actually downloading and not installing from the disk itself, even though the screen suggests I am. How odd.

SO... I thought I was having a pretty easy run on classic Ironman. right up until my last mission about 5 weeks in. Just had my first encounter with Floaters, they were inside a building so I had my guys setup on hte doors and breach. Killed 1 but there were still 2 more in there. Turns out evern thought the Ceiling of the building was SOLID floaters can fly through the ceiling (without breaking it), guess they just phase through and flank my guys. Result: Veteran Heavy with 16 kills (Lt. Tamren) and veteran Sniper (Sgt. Q. Stone) plus a rookie dead

I gotta say that felt really cheap. If I knew they could fly through ceilings like that I would have set up differently.

I got an excellent and a good on it, but failed to save the VIP. So I guess I failed? But I still made it back to evacuate with everybody alive.

Might test that theory and run it again and see.

Decided just to eject the disc for giggles, as it wasn't spinning all that hard. Installation kept on chugging, downloading directly from Steam. The discs...they seem to be decoys.

I hate that crap. What is the point of even having the disc? I have horrific network slowness in my area right now, and wanted a hard copy to avoid having to download for a whole day. So much for that idea.

Well, what do you expect when you are taking on an unknown enemy?

Geez, things seem to ramp up fast in the second month. Just had my first squad wipe, all I'm left with now are rookies after the last 2 missions.

I'm not sure, but I think they have a "teleport" type skill. They certainly do in open ground. Maybe it works through walls as well.

So, has anybody figured out how to pick up stuff of the ground yet?

I haven't even made it home to play yet, but I know how to put things on the ground. Just don't know how to pick them up.

I'm pretty sure I heard in one of the many interview/gameplay videos that there's no looting of dead players for items.

Never mind. Same thing that's in the game pack. Reference card really. Not a 'manual'.

I heard a dev refer to a floater as being able to teleport anywhere on the battlefield. However I thought they had a rocket pack animation when they moved. If so, that's confusing.

I too saw a floater blast off through a solid ceiling even though it didn't break. They really shouldn't be able to inside a building unless they can break the ceiling.

Idgaf, on the pc version, I can make someone's first move, then go on to other characters and come back to finish up later. I don't know if that is in the 360 final version, but it is in the pc one.

Thanks Robear. I now realise it's because shooting/attack stops you being able to move. That's annoying. Thinking about Ravenloft, for example, I'm pretty sure you could move once and attack, move twice, or attack and move once. Without playing more of Xcom, I prefer that way of doing things.

This game is crack. Pure 100% crack.

I thought I was doing well.... until the enemy started using grenades.

I'll agree with the gripes about loadouts. Seems like there should be more slots for the alternate option instead of just one.

1Dgaf wrote:

Normally, you can do all these things except the last one. If you attack on your first half-turn, you can no longer move.

Some of the weapons require a full turn to fire, so if you move first, they can no longer fire (sniper rifle and rocket launcher come to mind). Character perks override some of those rules though: snipers can pick a perk that lets their shot take only a half-turn and heavies (I think) can take a perk that lets them shoot again if they shot during the first half-turn.

Has anyone fired out how to zoom in when at base?

I think I'm about done with Ironman mode for now. It's far too easy to catch a couple of critical shots in a row and wipe out on a mission. I don't mind losing a veteran soldier here and there to chance, but I don't have the time to lose entire teams just because a Thin Man is feeling lucky. It'll be a nice challenge down the line, but it's a little much, especially when I'm still learning the game.
