XCOM: Enemy Unknown - Strategy Game - Developed by Firaxis

Yep, this is XCOM.

As an additional, "this is XCOM" point but with the situation going the other way: I had a solider move up and encounter an "unexpected" alien. On the next turn he took fire, was wounded, and panicked. The resulting panic fire took out the alien. It felt exactly like the good old days.

The first time I saw a Thin Man it skittered to cover with some very unnatural-looking movements. Limbs bending in the wrong direction and stuff. I don't know if it was a glitch or intended, but I really hope it was intended because it was REALLY creepy. It looked like it was an octopus in a suit.

Oh, good. On game #2 I can place my starter base on whichever region I want rather than just Europe or North America. Is this because I didn't enable the tutorial or because I did something in my first game?

Not sure since I've only played the demo so far, but I'd also be interested to know how that works.

On a related note any thoughts on the relative values of the various starter base bonuses?

Only played the demo, but if nothing changed, then unfortunately everybody speaks and sounds 'merican, regardless of country of origin. It's the future, and the effects of globalization are hard felt everywhere, it seems.

It's so weird, given it's Firaxis we're talking about. They voiced dead languages for Civ V, for chrissake.

I'm seriously not ragging on you guys but They made a damn fine game If this is the thing you choose to complain about. Just a observation!

Anyways I'll join the Greek chorus and say this game is really awesome so far. Really great year for the PC and turn base games.

As commander I decided to recurit only the best. I recruited the legends among us like Hulk Hogan, Steve Urkal, Dean Cain, and Bruce Lee. Earth is in good hands.

I chose Europe because it seemed like it would save me the most money over time (reduces construction and maintenance costs for labs and workshops). Presumptuous, I know.

I was kind of surprised at the number of variations on sideburns available, yet no ordinary goatee, no fu manchu.

To be honest I'm not 100 percent sure I have my pre-order content. Armor customization seems pretty limited, with only two deco "styles."

I think that's it. You also get the flat top that I don't think is not supposed to be in regular.

I definitely have the flat-top. Two of my team were randomly given them, including one lady. One stylin' lady. From Saudi Arabia. And now I understand why they cover their heads.

Upcoming DLC.

Autosave is *NOT* enabled by default unless you do Ironman mode. Ask me how I know...

I really hope the mod community gears up.... This would be the first mod I would get

Somehow it just doesnt feel right to have troopers from Germany, China, UK sound like they are from Columbus Ohio.

Lost 2 hours of play because the game crashed while upgrading my interceptors. Now, it's decided that I don't really need to shoot during the tactical part. Yep, this is Firaxis.

Third mission out, everyone panics and fires into the air, I yell at computer screen, and then everyone dies. I yell some more.

yup. Xcom.

ME LIKEY!!!

and I really want to know what the bug is on 5760x1080 that results in upside down world....

Wow, is no one else getting these bugs? In the tactical combat, multiple times the game has just hung up without me being able to input.

It's the game telling you, "two monitors is enough, showoff."

I could be wrong but I suspect they put this in to stop the lag spikes to the video when the party leaves the scene - very evident in the demo which drew negative comments.

I played through three missions of the tutorial before work this morning. It really does do a nice job of capturing the XCOM feel. The smaller squad size is actually a plus, at least so far. I am looking forward to diving into this tonight with a new Classic Ironman game.

I thought the tutorial only let you place the base in either NA or Europe.

I just noticed that disabling the tutorial seems to be the way to go. This allows you to choose any continent for your base as well as promotions for all of your squad on the first mission, assuming they survive of course.

Nice find.

It will help ease the wait.

I got that once, but I waited for about 30 seconds and everything became responsive again. Not sure what made it happen though.

Plus I missed getting a screenshot of a pretty good bug. I had a Thin Man standing horizontal while shooting. Too worried about getting my head blown off to take the shot.

My most experienced squad Heavy, Sgt. Hwang Hong, is tearing up the Sectoid menace wherever he goes. Am I culturally insensitive for shouting "Wooo! Hong KONG!" every time he gets a kill?

He's Korean.

(Absolutely getting nothing else done today. This game is fantastic, I'm right back in the original X-Com mindset.)

Of course Steam decides last night to stop letting me purchase anything regardless of any payment method I try. Anyone know how long I should expect their support center to get back to me?

Could you buy it somewhere else and just register the key? Might be cheaper even.

I saw GMG has another 25% off coupon but XCOM is specifically excluded . I got the game from them when the 25% off worked on XCOM and I traded in all my low valued games I got for free for another 1.5$ in discount. I ended up paying 32~$ . I still have to wait until the 12th to get the game which kinda stinks.

Once he earns a nickname you should totally set it to "Hong Kong." Just imagine him bristling every time someone calls him that. Then if he ever panics and shoots a teammate, you have a nice little narrative.
