Tokyo Jungle (PSN) Catch-All

Yeah, the cat unlocks from the pom. I think the beagle unlocks from the cat, then the tosa, then the wolf.

I think that's just a record of how many generations you've played as that animal. I don't know if there's any benefit to it.

Is it just me, or does the concept for this game sound a lot like Cubivore?

I recall hearing somewhere it was made by some of the same people.

Picked this game up earlier today and played a bit this afternoon. Unfortunately I haven't had much success getting behind the first station in survivial (stupid beagles) and story mode won't let me progress past the tutorial, despite doing it twice.

You have to unlock new story chapters by completing the animal-specific challenges in survival mode.

On a side note... If I could count the number of times I've been nearing my end of life, trying to track down a nearby female, only to have some Crocodile or pack of lions Lion notice her and fling her lifeless body across the screen to land at my feet where I'm watching helplessly from a patch of tall grass...

so what's the GWJ consensus? Buy? It's discounted for PS+ members...then again...x-com is coming out this week...

The game does have a slow start, as you must learn the optimal way to survive to get the most out of the game. Other than that, I have no hesitation recommending this game.

Buy! Buy so you can be an ostrich who kills dinosaurs by kicking them in the face!

YEah, can't really argue with that logic.

For what it's worth, I bought this a little while ago on Giant Bomb's recommendation and really wasn't sure if I'd like it. I've been playing it for about the last 6 hours and am still playing it now. It's not a perfect game but something about this is so incredibly compelling and I'm really loving it. I may have a 3 way run for my downloadable game of the year now. Get it.

damn you enablers. so no one in the GWJ community dislikes the game? damnit...

This is something worth noting. Understand that while most of us are recommending this, anyone considering the game should understand that this game is "unique". Basically what I'm trying to say don't expect to be blown away by crazy graphics, a deep engaging story, or some unique control scheme. It is a game that has its issues not the least of which is just wrapping your head around the concept of the game.

Basically if you've watched the quick look or read our descriptions of our experiences and you're not completely freaked out/turned off by the game, go ahead and buy it.

(How's that for a horrible sell? )

Yeah, there are definitely nits to pick with this game (even if you use some flea shampoo). I hated the stealth missions in the storyline, for instance. I don't like how the incredibly useful "headlamp" item I found breaks and costs something like 70,000SP to replace. But for how much stuff there is in this game that's really unique, it's surprisingly well done.

Can I put this in my signature? I honestly haven't seen much that makes me want to create a signature but this is so awesome!

Better to ask forgiveness than persimmon?

It does have its flaws; it's also the only game that my friend brought along on our trip to GDC online.

So I bought the game, I'll try and find time between this, BL2, FTL, and X-COM to give my impressions.

What made me decide to cave in was the 'limited time' discount for PlayStation Plus. I realize discounts for downloadable titles happen often, but are few and far between certain/the same titles. For example, I'm still waiting on the Castle Crasher discount that occurred two years ago...

Be my guest!

New animals out today! Crocodile, Giraffe, Panda and Kangaroo.

Ah the Panda. A carnivore that only eats bamboo. Nature's moron.

I've encountered dinosaurs for the first time tonight. They honestly haven't been as big of a threat as the massive packs of lions that were hanging out around the train station. The dinos are so much cooler than lions though.

I managed to live more than 75 years with the starting deer and I completed every challenge. No matter how many generations I had I still didn't get enough strength to take out a wolf on my own. I was beating the crap out of a lion cub for a little while until a second cub came along. As I ran away I had to run through two giant packs of lions that essentially controlled the entire section of the map I was in.

One of the coolest things I did as a deer was dodge an attack from a crocodile by accident and sprint off in a very similar fashion to what you might see on a nature show.

I'm really looking forward to unlocking some of the less domestic animals.

I like the crocodile, but it's considered a "large" animal, so it can't get into the sewers. What kind of BS is that? I've seen them down there!

New content drop yesterday! Three free items, including a weird nipple hat, the ropey robe thing the Tosa wore in story mode, and a Famitsu shirt (eeee!!!!). Also four new animals, including the first form of the final boss of story mode, a sabre-toothed tiger, a homo erectus and... a Japanese businessman. Because why not, internet? Why not indeed.

The boss and two humans (hominids?) cannot breed and do not age, which is kind of a shame but totally understandable.

I will use this nipple hat with pride.

Just when I thought Tokyo Jungle couldn't possibly get more bizarre...

Nobody has posted here in a few days, but I just picked this up the other day. Man what a weird, weird, crazy addictive game. I'm not a big fan of roguelikes, but every time one of my animals dies, I immediately want to start up another generation.

I was just able to unlock the cat. Now I just need to figure out how to survive longer than 30 years...

It'll come in time, as you learn the ins and outs of the game and unlock more powerful animals and items. Don't forget to download all the free DLC from the store. Some of the items you get are REALLY good (I like the + hunger ones in particular) and are indestructible.

I got my first big boost in survivability once I learned how to read the map. Those little meters that pop up show you food availability, which is key to survival at all stages. Of course they don't tell you if that food's been poisoned by pollution, or if you're a carnivore, what kind of meat it is. You can't eat what you can't kill.

As my friend found out when he finally made it to a new district and found that the lions objected to being eaten.

had enough time to download all of the free stuff this morning, and had an extra $5 left over from my purchase of the game so I got 2 character packs. Can't wait to get back home and kill some stuff with my cat.
