Fall 2012 & Spring/Summer 2013 TV Catch-all

excellent excellent work. Not so say that she doesn't make mistakes in acting choices - See her take on a ditzy fairy in Once Upon a Time which was just basically every annoying trait of Fred's from Angel, amped up.

I wouldn't say that's on her. As someone who's now going through the first season, and just saw that episode a few days ago, I'd put most of the acting on the director, as it all has a very specific tone.

That's most likely the actual case I admit, which brings up to my mind a small sense of mis-casting. Give Acker something meatier and put her against Ginnfer Goodwin and OUaT would have gold on their hands, especially if that ideal episode has more scenes of Caryle and Parrilla facing off.

Back to PoI and I love that all the little bits of humor that we did get in this episode, all came from Bear. "Expensive Taste" indeed

Well I thought I would pop in this thread a little late to the party and add my opinions about Fall TV! Yay!

First off, with all the talk about Person Of Interest I might have to check this show out. I love Chris Nolan to death and his brother created this show?! Cool...but his brother also wrote a lot of stuff and created Flash Forward remember that show? If not, it was awful and got canceled after the first season. That show is the reason I don't watch first seasons of most shows unless it is getting *super* hyped. Me and my wife started Homeland last year early after seeing rave reviews and haven't looked back. But personally, watching week to week for Season 1 of Homeland, I thought it dragged a little when the show transitioned in the later episodes. But still a great show, but still second to Breaking Bad IMO.

As for the show's I've watched this Fall so far and am looking forward to:

Sons of Anarchy still an episode sitting on the TiVo, this show takes awhile to get rolling in a season and I don't feel as connected to the characters at first. So a lot of the twists and drama of the first 2(? maybe 3) episodes for me has landed a little flat. Don't know if this is the writing or me personally, but not as good as I would like.

Homeland seems to be the one show (besides Dexter for my wife, it's looking good so far this year though) so far for me and the wife that is must see every week. The first episode brought back a lot of the intrigue and plot that I thought was missing from the tail end of last season. It was action-y and tense and pretty great return overall IMO how they re-introduced some characters and it didn't feel *super* hokey the way some characters came back.

As for the rest, we still haven't watched either episode of Fringe yet, so can't judge there. Have loved Fringe in spots and felt frustrated at times, but sad to see it go And then we have the basic comedy trio for our household: Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, and Two and A Half Men. None of which are anything more than something to watch and aren't holding interest, save for How I Met Your Mother, but in a frustrating and lovely way.

Looking forward to: The Walking Dead and American Horror Story. Me and the wife liked the first season of AHS and the second season of The Walking Dead drug onnnnn, but we're interested to see if it gets better.

If this was TL;DR: summary: Yo, Fall TV! Some's good, hopeful to hear what people say about the new shows this fall, sounds like Revolution is a miss? Any other good shows besides Person of Interest? I'm still curious about Justified but I could never find the first season playing on TV when I had the time to watch or record a whole marathon...Any who, thanks for bearing with my long winded-ness!

Welcome to the discussion!

I have to slightly disagree with you on Flashforward. It did start out rough, and dropped it. But I started hearing good stuff, so I picked it back up.

It got a lot better, and I was really disappointed to see it go. But it lost so many viewers, and is so dependent on keeping up with the story, i doubt it was ever going to build an audience again.

I didn't realize the it was a Nolan project, but that makes sense now. He sure didn't make the mistake of a bad start with PoI.

Justified is well worth the effort to catch up with. I wish it was streaming, as we have lost patience with watching TV via DVD, and we do still need to finish season 2.

Yea, I was checked out for the most part on Flash Forward. Ralph Fiennes (sp?) I think his name is, Voldemort's brother is an okay actor but I really did not like him in Flash Forward or Camelot (which was another show I felt burned on, was on Starz). The show was interesting, but just lost the thread and started to do the whole "going in circles and changing up the twists" and just meandering IMO. But I have heard a lot of good things about Person of Interest, so I think if I could ever find the first season somehow, I would love to watch that show. Benjamin Linus will always be my jam, no matter what! I was just a little scared of starting that show when it came out. Instead, me and the wife watch Awake last year, and loved it...but sadly, it has perished.

As for Justified, I would probably just rent the discs from Netflix some time to get caught up. I love Timothy Oliphant (sp?), but just never caught it on the first season and haven't had time to catch up.

Edit: After finally fact checking myself, it was David Goyer, not Jon Nolan, who was the creator of Flash Forward. He was a collaborator and writer of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. My bad on that one. And the actor is Joseph Fiennes, Ralph Fiennes brother.

Flash Forward went from good to great at episode 9 or so. When the one guy (also an intern on Scrubs s8) proved that we could change the future. That's when it went from interesting sci-fi show I'm watching to "holy crap I love this show and must see it every week". And if it had been in the V time slot after LOST instead of the one it was in, we'd still be watching it every week.

But I think we've covered this the last 3 TV topics...

Sorry, my bad for drudging up old shows in talking about Person of Interest. But I think we can all agree that Person of Interest should be watched Which I will rectify soon, hopefully!

So about Dexter is it me or is the end of the episode:

Spoiler:

another one of his visualizations, like the airport scene? I have a hard time believing Deb would toss his place that randomly, she seems to be the confront them head on, or sneak around in the back without being noticed sort...

Homeland: still rocking the crazy

There is a Dexter thread, Nos. It probably hasn't been bumped lately though. I am a little behind this week and haven't watched the premiere yet.

Justified is completely awesome. I recently watched all three seasons thanks to the buzz here on GWJ. Start today!

OK so I just finished watching the second episode of the The Neighbors and I fully expected to hate it, or if not hate it at least find it stupid. Surprisingly though I find myself laughing more often then not and the name thing just keeps getting funnier and funnier. I feel like I should be ashamed, but I'm not.

Anyone else watching?

I just watched the 2nd episode last night, and I have to agree. It's very stupid, but it keeps getting laughs out of me. I'll keep watching it for sure.

So, Homeland episode 2...

Spoiler:

In one fell swoop not only is Brody completely f*cked, but Carrie is proved to be 100% correct in her suspicions. I can only assume that this information will never see the light of day. I wonder what Saul is going to do?

Spoiler:

That, and even if it doesn't see the light of day/gets lost, how long can Saul keep it a secret from her, knowing (from her own admission) that it was being on "wrong" about Brody is what has made her as she is now?

Homeland continues to be amazing and I am pleasantly surprised by Dexter. Last season sucked and I was worried that its just going to continue to be stale. This season is a nice twist so far.

I stalled out maybe six episodes into last season of Dexter. I consider Colin Hanks to be one of the very worst actors that still somehow keeps getting work and I just couldn't keep watching. Is it worth reading a plot synopsis or something to pick the show back up?

Well, the intro to the first show of this season I think sums up the meta-plot. Any summary of last season will just be about the Doomsday Killer and what the "last season on.." intro exposes.

Just watch the last episode of S6 because it sets up the main premis for the current season.

Nashville wasn't half bad. I tend to shy away from musical type shows but this one seems to have a bit more depth to it than I expected. Connie Britton is great, and there is a humongous support cast chock full of actors I love. For now it stays on the weekly watch list.

This might be a bit relevant. Season 3 of The League just popped up on Netflix. I think it is coinciding with the soon-to-be start of Season 4.

We watched the premier of Arrow last night, and it wasn't half bad. It's definitely a CW take on Green Arrow, but I think it has a lot of promise. We're definitely going to keep it in the rotation for awhile.

Haha, that's awesome.

I enjoyed it! DC comic fan here and I'm liking this tone and feel that they are trying to go for this updated treatment of Green Arrow.

Not totally sold on all the actors, except for Amell himself in the lead role. Great look, good screen presence, plays PTSD well, gets the balance of acting like someone who is trying to act spoiled but doing it badly and is believable in all the action/fight scenes that he seemed to have done himself.

As for the island he was trapped on, it's clear that he wasn't alone but

Spoiler:

I think there is a chance that he wasn't on the Island for the full 5 years as stated. It looks like someone already on the Island found him, nursed him back to health and taught him the skills to hunt, do free running/climbing and shoot with the bow (the bow shown in the show belongs to this master). Later on, a group of mercenaries, lead by Deathstroke, show up, looking for this Teacher. Oliver helps them, thinking they are his ticket off the island, and they take him off the island for some missions in Russia, training and teaching him additional skills like the hacking, electronics and hand-to-hand. But later on, they betray him and either Oliver and his Teacher fled back to the Island or Oliver willingly goes back to the Island to try stop them from killing his Teacher. This accumulates into a showdown with Deathstroke on the Island after his Teacher is killed, most likely a long, drawn out cat-and-mouse game over a long period of time, until Oliver gets the upper hand and takes out Deathstroke's eye, who then escapes for the Island in his own transport, but trapping Oliver there once again.

Looking forward to seeing where they go with this.

Homeland can be tragic and amazing all in the same episode — really enjoying it.

Also, Fringe still rocks, in case you were wondering.

I was really hoping the first episode was going to be the entire show with them as the cast.

Anyone else watching Project Runway? Rather, anyone else willing to admit it?

We got lured back by the promise of a more classic season without the rotating cast of replacement refs judges. It hasn't been too bad, actually, although I continue to be baffled by the judges' tastes at times. As a first, I don't feel like any of the contestants were kept around past their due dates simply because they were Female Doggoy.

The finale's this Friday, and it still feels pretty up in the air at this point.

Spoiler:

My money's on Christopher, because he's got that bland, commercial look they seem to like. But they really tore into him this past week during the pre-finale elimination, so who knows? I still think he'll win it just because I don't like him.

We watch Project Runway in our house. It really is one of the good reality shows. I probably wouldn't turn it on myself, but I find it fun to watch when my wife and daughter are watching.

Yep, I watch it with the wife. I enjoy it, actually. That and Top Chef are the only reality shows I like.

In other news, Major Crimes improved greatly after the first couple of clunker episodes. They still have a ways to go to make the main character interesting enough to center a show around, but the supporting cast is developing because of the imbalance. Some good cases, too. Only huge misfire is the new female detective they brought on. They have no idea what to do with her, and it shows.

This except I would add Top Shot. It's a great one for me and my son to watch. It's fun to watch them blow things up (and it lets me keep my man-card).
