The game is not strictly FTP. It's a one time purchase then FTP, just like GW2 is.
FAQ is available: http://www.thewarz.com/faq.html
explains servers and hosting, somewhat.
Also explains micro transactions and makes it clear it's not Pay to Win. Items of convience such as food can be purchased if you just must spend real $ on them, also you can use the in game store to rent and host a server(s).
No, i don't understand the stronghold hosting included in the pre-purchase but i'm guessing it's a private stronghold server/map to store sh*t for you and maybe friends that you can password....cool if it is i guess.
I'm gonna go ahead and buy in after doing research and watching the most current vids i could find.
So, i'll have 3 guest passes available for start of beta on oct 31st good for 2 days. Alpha starts 15th and you get in that if you buy in at 30 or 50$. 50$ includes what seems like a lot for the money in return value and the price goes up quite a bit after the 20th of october.
The last 'preview video' I saw of this, it still looked really early stages. I wonder if they're pushing it out to counter what 'rocket' said about getting the DayZ stand-alone out in the next couple of months..
Not that the two should be compared................
I'll keep an eye on this, but it just hasn't grabbed me so far...
I'll check out more recent stuff when I get a sec, but what I saw just felt.... Cartoon-ey. Hopefully there'll be a trial of some kind..
I've never really had much bad luck with the hacking most have experienced, maybe three times out of the 120 hours on dayz, but it seems I am the exception.
Anyway, did I read somewhere that the war z will have 'safe zones' where pvp is disabled?
I guess it just depends what you're looking for. I'll wait to see what both released games are like before fully passing judgement.
This game rubs me the wrong way, it's just so shameless in what it's trying to do. Even stuff like this obviously staged video with the guys playing doing their best DayZ youtube video impression: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5eS5...
Help! There's a moncler under my bed!
"Quick! DayZ sold a million copies of ARMA. We've got this engine already (looks XBox-y), we can copy all the items and BAM, there's our million bucks!"
It really does look cartoon-y, glowing items, waaaaay too much carry capacity. Leveling up? XP points!?!
Leaves me with a stong "meh" feeling.
CoD-ified DayZ... No thanks. I'll be passing on this one.
PS: countdown until Max Brooks' (World War Z) Publisher gets annoyed by the name "War Z". With the movie coming out (apparently having some real problems... ie: sounds like it's terrible in it's current state), and inevitably a game "tie-in"...
I will reserve judgment until I have actually played both, or all three if you include State of Decay, although I'm still not sure what kind of game that is either.
My comments above were purely my intial reaction to what i've seen so far.
Granted, competition is always a good thing, as it encourages fresh ideas and pushes boundaries. However, if the two (or more) options are too similar, then I think that is a bad thing, as they will constantly be tit for tat about who came up with X new feature first.
I hope there is some kind of trial with the war z, and i'll be interested to see exactly what comes of the paid-for items. For example, it has been noted that players can buy food and drink for real cash - are those resources really that scarce? Ammunition scarcity, fine, but food and drink should be relatively available in comparison imho.
It'll be a fun couple of months watch the build up - both technical, and press-hype.
Taking inspiration from a game isn't the same as noticing that something is popular and going "OH SHI-, let's take this game we were making and retrofit it to match their idea". If a designer looks at DayZ and wants to make his or her own version of that then I love that, but to me this is money men looking at DayZ thinking they can make a quick buck by crapping out a game that apes it.
I'm in for this. Fuzz will you be on vent the 15th? We need to get together..
I'm just really digging the "hardcore mil-sim"-ness of DayZ. If WarZ can lose the "cartoony-ness" (not quite the word I'm looking for) then we'll see.
And competition is good.
I'm going to be frank: Copy of DayZ or not this game looks like garbage.

What parts?
DayZ looks and plays like garbage, but it's still fun.
Aright, my apologies. I was being a little overzealous with my comment but it just angers me to see almost every single idea copied. Yes, competition is a good thing but it just rubs me the wrong way.
DayZ standalone is coming out by the end of the year. It should be able to stand on its own two feet. If not, well then alternatives are a good thing to have.

Sure they copied some things, but I don't have any emmotional attachment to DayZ. If they can copy ideas and execute them better than DayZ than as a consumer I'm all for it. With that said they are also doing a lot of things on their own that aren't part of DayZ.

I'll buy the DayZ stand alone as well. I still really like DayZ but just because I like Call of Duty doesn't mean I can't play Battlefield 3 or Medal of Honor.
what did you buy in at, Gumbie?
I'm going to get the $30 package, that way if it's a piece of sh*t I'm only out $30.
How do the strongholds work? If I'm right, they are a separate map that certain players/clan memebers can get to, but other users can't? if that's the case, then why would you need fortifications on your monthly rented stronghold map?
When you guys do get access to this, please do post your thoughts on it.

It's NDA'ed until the beta starts at the end of Oct.
