I Just Got a PS2, Recommend Me Games!

Pages

So I pretty much skipped whole generations of console gaming. During the early 80's, I had 'em all. Atari, Vectrex, Odyssey, Colecovision, etc etc, all up to the Atari 5200. Then I got a PC and my console gaming stopped for the most part. I then got a Dreamcast many years ago, which I still play, and a PS3 two years ago, which I love, but now that I'm more into console gaming, I've been dying to get a PS2 so I can play some games from that part of console gaming history as well.

Welp, my co-worker just gave me his PS2 for free. It needs a cleaning, but it works! YAY! I've got Max Paine for it, and I just purchased Burnout Revenge, so the next games I plan to get are:

Test Drive: Eve of Destruction
SSX Tricky
War of the Monsters
Robot Alchemic Drive

Any other awesome games y'all could recommend? I love just about all gaming types except traditional sports games. I'm also excited to try more Japanese strategy RPGs like Final Fantasy Tactics, so I'm told Disgaea is another game I should try. I've also heard the Baldur's Gate games are fun with multiple folks.

Thanks y 'all!

Oh, before y'all recommend it, I also already have the Ico/Shadow of the Colossus set for the PS3.

If you like 3d platformers:

Ratchet and Clank series
Jak and Daxter series
Sly Cooper series

Sly Cooper is a little more easy/casual than the others.

Oh those all exist in collections on PS3 though, so that might be the way to go if that's an option for you. So this post sucked.

I'm not sure if you know, but FFT is a PS1 game, not PS2. I would strongly suggest you get the remake, War of the Lions, on PSN and play it on your PS3. The original translation is a travesty, while the new one is a revelation, and they're the same price on PSN.

Truth be told my PS2 ownership was spotty. I owned three, but I don't think I bought more than ten of fifteen games total. I honestly can't remember much to recommend outside of mainstays like Final Fantasy X and XII.

Oh, one JRPG that stands out: Suikoden 3.

War of the Lions n PSN? Got it.

I've only played one Ratchet and Clank game on the PS3, the Crack in Time one, but I reallyy enjoyed it. Been meaning to get those HD remakes.

Definitely recommend sly cooper, great series. Another vote for Disgaea, although if you have that on handheld that might be better. The Ace combat series is really fun to, with a pretty good story as well (I'll always remember the Yellows).

Tons and tons of rpgs, I lost my taste for them a long time ago still there are some good ones: Breath of fire, Suikoden, Final Fantasy, among many more. I'm also a big dynasty wars fan but that needs to be played coop.

Dark Cloud is an old but fun game. Second was alright too. Oooh God hand go play that, fun, tough as nails, and awesome. Odin sphere and okami are both on there as well.

Probable a bunch more but this is a damn good start.

Edit: Damn you have r.a.d. I always wanted to play that one, but could never get it. Looked fun

I don't have it yet, but I want it. Thanks for the other recommendations!

Culdcept is probably my most-played PS2 game. It's a fantastic mix of Monopoly meets Magic the Gathering. The single player campaign features an overland map (which the sequel, Culdcept Saga, sadly lacks) and a mildly amusing storyline. You can check out some of my mature screenshots of the game here.

Odin Sphere is a beautiful 2D platform action game. It has some serious slowdown during a few of the boss battles, but the experience is still a great one overall.

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, and the Digital Devil Sagas are challenging, deep good ol' JRPGs.
Shadow Hearts, Shadow Hearts Covenant and Shadow Hearts: From the New World - another fun JRPG series with an awesome battle mechanic known as the Judgement Ring. Covenant was my favorite one of the three.
Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits: This game got slapped around quite a bit from various reviewers, but I enjoyed it. It had another great battle system (turn based, but you could move around the battlefield), and one of my favorite RPG characters: Bebedora!

I keep hearing Culdcept bounced around and I'm intrigued. Looks pretty deep!

Dark Cloud 2 was amazing. Skip the first.
Baulder's Gate: Dark Alliance 1/2 and/or Champions of Norrath
Final Fantasy X if you don't want to wait for the PS3 HD remake

Many of the PS2 games I'd recommend have HD remakes for PS3 now. I'm a huge fan of the Ratchet and Clank series.

There are also games like the Onimusha series that I loved at the time, but I'm not quite sure how they'd hold up now.

Edit: Also, despite how much sh*t the series gets now, the first 2 Kingdom Hearts games were quite good.

Y'know, a lot of the stuff I was thinking about got mentally shot down in one way or another. Either it's been enhanced elsewhere or I would recommend something else more recent for a better experience. There's not a single first person shooter on PS2 I'd recommend over, say, Modern Warfare 1. Ditto for third person shooters and Vanquish. The Onimusha games were pretty good, as were Devil May Cry 1 and 3, but the collection of the latter is out, and Bayonetta is the pinnacle of the genre.

Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven is quite awesome, and hasn't been topped I think. Unless you count Mark of the Ninja, which.. well, I call 'em a different genre.

While final fantasy tactics is probably my all time favorite game, I'm afraid war of the lions is a psp game, so if you don't have a psp or vita you're out of luck there, but there is an over priced ios port that's slightly better than nothing. And sadly the translation on the ps1 version is so bad I can't really recommend it.

Other than that, I highly recommend persona 3 fez and persona 4. Both have better versions on the psp and Vita respectively, but their great games worth playing anyway you can. (And last I checked still pretty cheap on ps2)

Okami. I wouldn't pass it up.

Okami (my second favorite game coincidentally, not sure why I didn't think of it before) is supposed to have an hd version next year.
And I hear it's only going to be twenty dollars U.S. so I'd hold out for that version.

I was quite sure you could play PSN games on a PS3. Is that only for PS1 games?

PSN is just a store front. Every game is still for a specific system. The only exceptions are PS1 games and the handful of crossover Vita/PS3 games.

Oh, gross. Google'd it and found a gaggle of angry people that bought it thinking they could play it on PS3.

Well, the PS1 classics version is still great. But the PSP game is amazing.

Afraid so :(.

EDIT: Tannhausered again.

This and this. The two best games you probably can't play on another system outside the BC PS3.

IMAGE(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d3/We_%E2%99%A5_Katamari.png)

Ring of Red-fantastic SRPG
Final Fantasy XII
Ace Combat 4 and 5

Alright, so I'm getting suggestions here and elsewhere, and I just got VERY cheaply on Amazon both Destroy all Humans and The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction.

Both sound awesomely fun.

Actually that Hulk game is quite fun.

Are you looking for PS1 games as well, since the PS2 is backwards compatible? If so: Parappa the Rapper. If not, Parappa the Rapper 2.

I know you have Burnout Revenge, but Burnout 3 is IMO the best of the series. It and Revenge are definitely different enough to warrant having both in your collection. To see Criterion getting Burnout firing on all cylinders pre-EA, look for Burnout 2 as well.

Max Payne 2 is a much better-realized game than MP as well, so there's that.

Throwing in +1s for Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, Champions of Norrath, and Katamari Damacy.

Funny, other folks said Revenge is the best of the Burnout series. Ah well, I'll get both eventually.

What the what?

I'll throw a list out later. I've skimmed the thread so there will be repeats. I had a substantial collection. A lot of these can probably be bought in HD collections on tie PS3.

Red Faction (I actually really enjoyed the simple story and the geo-mod tech is still really cool)
Final Fantasy X
Final Fabtasy XII
Arc the Lad
Xenosaga (only owned the first one. Liked it but story didn't justify the massive cut-scenes)
God of War
God of War 2
Twisted Metal Black
Metal Gear Solid 2: Guns of the Patriots
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Katamari
We <3 Katamari
Okami
Shadow of the Colossus
Devil May Cry
God Hand (Edwin will back me up on how fantastically insane this game is)
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (brilliant game)
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Gun (Red Dead before there was Red Dead)
Soul Caliber III
Summoner (at one point it was the only game worth owning on the PS2. Ugly and clunky but I loved it)
Wild Arms
X-Men Legends
X-Men Legenda 2: Rise of Apocalypse

Dark Cloud 2 (a.k.a. Dark Chronicle) was already recommended by somebody above, but it deserves much more praise. A truly great Action RPG, highly recommended!

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is great, though you might want a PS3 remake of the whole trilogy instead.

Beyond Good And Evil - another underappreciated gem.

Amplitude - the best music/rhythm game on the PS2.

Games with HD remakes:

The ones I think people might care about:

Beyond Good and Evil
Devil May Cry Series (I do not recommend)
God of War 1 & 2
Ratchet and Clank series
Sly Cooper series
Jak and Daxter series
Ico
Shadow of the Colossus
Killzone
Resident Evil 4 (Best played with pointer controls - maybe move support? )
Okami (Best played with pointer controls - maybe move support?)
Prince of Persia Trilogy

Damn straight--spent a lot of time with that game

If you're looking for JRPGs, Rogue Galaxy was always a favorite of mine. Phantom Brave, La Pucelle Tactics, and Disgaea are all very good strategy RPGs as well.

You know, if you're ever looking to not spend a ton of money on some of the harder to find games, I have a google doc for (most--not sure how updated it is) of the games I own. I'd be willing to lend you a couple if you're having trouble finding them or if they are stupid expensive.

Also, pay no attention to the "Finished?" column. I totally intend on beating ALL of those games. Totally. Just after I finish some new games I got

The same goes for the PS1 games, too. Just send me a PM if you're interested.

Rogue Galaxy! Great call, CptDomano. That's a fantastic JRPG. Full of personality and colour. Fun battle system and little weird pokemon/chess mini-game. Even the crafting was weird, in-depth, and awesome.
