SimCity 5 Disappointment-All

There are a *ton* of good independent games out there waiting to fill the void. Patronize them instead. Steam, Gamersgate, GoG, even Gamestop Now are your friends. :-)

Believe me, I do. But I'm not sure that message is getting to EA. Voting with your feet doesn't send a clear signal when they didn't really believe you're their market in the first place.

I hear that. EA is not exactly attuned to *gamers*, as such.

The thing that's most depressing about this whole situation is the realization that, no matter how bad the deal is that's on offer, some gamers will happily take it. EA may succeed at this bullsh*t.

I swear, if gaming companies came up with a game where, once a week, they showed up at your house and beat you with a stick, a large fraction of gamers would be posting pictures of Fry.

They seem to be gushing about the game.

Yeah, and they're paid advertiser dollars to do so.

Bastards! We shall see them routed, Sir Malor.

While they may be paid to inflate scores and gush, there's nothing really technically incorrect about anything they're saying about how the new engine is awesome.

To use an analogy: Just because you crap on a perfectly dry aged and cooked filet mignon, doesn't mean it stops being a filet. It just stops being one you want to eat.

Just brush it off a little. Just a new spice is all!

That's really been the tale of the last few years for me with a lot of games, where the game will be a mixed bag, some great elements spoiled by some bad elements, which lower my impression of the game as a whole. Some of those elements, like DRM or always-online requirements, stand as a 'front gate' before I even get to the good bits, so if I'm put off by them it doesn't matter how good the game is.

In some ways it's a blessing in disguise compared to the alternative, a game that's fine on the surface and then you get in and find something you don't like after you've already paid money for it.

And, from what I can tell, they're not even selling more games, for all this pain they're putting us through.

They're not selling more games because we are all filthy pirates. Can't be any other reason. La la LA LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU, PIRATE.

Games featured in previews are always awesome. Always.

It's sometimes interesting to read previews on canceled projects. It's amusing to read previews of things that later turned out to be terrible.

I recall a CGW feature, at least a decade ago, on the five games that were going to change PC gaming. Glowing previews, mixed results. Freelancer didn't usher in a new age of space sims (more's the pity). Halo certainly changed gaming, but not on the Mac. Black & White...turned out to be unique. The Sims outperformed even the glowing predictions. Ron Gilbert's Good & Evil...was canceled.

My point is less about failed prognostication than to point out that previews are prognostication, usually of a particularly glowing variety. (I was there for Master of Orion 3. I remember.)

I'm still baffled by the EA decision. I bought one of the first always-online required games, Settlers 7, as I didn't really mind the DRM (I never play on the road, I'm always connected). But even though the game was multiplayer-oriented, I could still toy around in single player without any other restriction.

At least it'll stunt my pile's growth a little

This is looking good if you ask me.

Looks good. I like that the roads act as a replacement for sewage/water/electricity hook-ups. Is there no more light/medium/heavy zoning? That'd probably be a welcome change too.

Looked like there was three tiers to the RCI placements.

Agreed! Who is that guy!

Thanks for the link, MannishBoy (.... Garion....kuddles)! It looks very interesting to me. I hope it turns out well.

I liked that first video, the second one was okayish, but what where they thinking in that third vid? BOYCOT!

Man, I love SimCity games. This looks great.

I'm anxious to see system requirements. This may be the game that forces me to upgrade my system.

I just wanted to fit in.

Seriously, though, every preview of this game I have seen, read or heard seems like everything I would want in a modernized SimCity game. I understand others being turned off by the persistent online thing, but I will be buying this on day one.

Or I will consider buying it day one, as apparently every good EA game in the works are also being released at the exact same time.

This absolutely, I just don't know that I'm onboard with it being MMO light. Kind of hypocritical given my views on other games, but ah well. Simcity never really had the online option for multiplayer at all, and I'm pretty sure that this one could be pretty damn awesome without it too.

That said, I'll probably wind up picking it up, despite any misgivings, because it really does look that cool

I really like where they appear to be going with this.
