XCOM: Enemy Unknown - Strategy Game - Developed by Firaxis

Jake mentioned that what they had initially done was pretty much re-skin the original game, and made changes where they seemed appropriate - in the interests of originality and fun. He alluded to the possibility that one of the potential advantages to the PC build, was possibly being able to get a hold of one of those early builds as a bonus... I can't remember if that was a pre-order thing or not. Is there still any mention of that floating around the 2k offices?

Unfortunately, not that I am aware of. I've actually only seen a video of that initial version (when I first interviewed here.) At that point, we had already switched to this current iteration. I would be very surprised if that initial iteration ever made it to the public eye. Sorry.

I really have to figure out where I'm preordering this from. I'd love to wait for a deal or at least order from greenman to save the token $5, but that means I won't get the key until release day, and then have to do the download along with all you other hooligans. Ordering from Steam at least makes it likely I can pre-load.

Tkyl:

Is the soundtrack going to be available for purchase other than in the CE?

Thanks

So I'm really torn on picking this up. I played the demo (twice) and it's caught my interest for sure. Never really bought into any game of this type/genre before though, and I never played any of the other XCOM games (of Firaxis games actually, so the Civ V pre-order deal doesn't really add much for me). My fear is I'll jump in, play XCOM for a few hours, and pack it away never to play again.

How interested are people in the multiplayer mode? I could see that being a big plus for me personally.

Your commentary and your willingness to hook up the community with a wee small part of the swag involved in this game is pretty cool.

I hope Tkyl will correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I recall he was a Goodjer before he was a Firaxiser (Firaxisite? Firaxisonian?).

Firaxist. And yes, I was a Goodjer before I was a Firaxist.

Aww. I was going to guess "Firby".

Put an XCOM patch at the center of that firry firby's belly and I think you have a winner.

Wow, that's a bummer. Perhaps it will be made available sometime after launch.

I like Firaxian myself. Makes it sound like you're engaged in high level diplomatic talks with the Romulans.

I like Firaxist because it's a play on Marxist.

Oh, and enjoy:

That is hilarious.

Hah!

It was great.

The was an awesome video. Best laugh I've had all day.

Wait? What?! I really want to be in that store so I can grab an early copy of XCOM - I don't even care if it's on 360!

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but just a heads-up that Amazon is giving away a $15 gift coupon with all XCOM pre-orders.

+1 sale for me.

Done.

Wait, looks like it's only being offered for the physical copies. not the PC download. Boo.

Notice that the physical copies are $59.99. The PC download copy is $44.99.

Whoops.

Sorry for misleading my digital brethren.

Yeah, but regular price on the PC digital copy is only $50, so really Amazon's only knocking $5 off. The $60 PC version is the special edition with extra swag.

I would have loved to be the one person in that game store that knew who he was. Would have been fun to reference the other multiplayer video that got released.

"Are you Dane Cook?"

And then trollface.

Between that video and this week's 3MA, I'm trying really hard not to become Jake Solomon's groupie.

I think it's great that Firaxis/2K let their lead developer get out there and promote the game. It's extra cool that they don't give him crap about dropping the occasional f-bomb too. He seems to just go out and talk to gamers as a a gamer.

Not that we've not seen that before. Cliffy B comes to mind. But XCOM is a strategy title, not a shooter. Strategy devs tend to be more "button-up" than rockstar.

Dang. Those kids don't know what they're missing. I woulda picked that game offa his hands so fast...

Wow. This is just awesome.
