XCOM: Enemy Unknown - Strategy Game - Developed by Firaxis

Tkyl,

Can you tell us if the soundtrack is going to be available for purchase outside of the CE? I'm a big fan of of the DX:HR soundtrack by Michael McCann, who I understand is doing the OST for XCOM. Judging by the music in the demo--a perfect match.

So, turns out that the patches are not for sale outside of the Special Edition. That said, I was able to get my hands on a couple extra patches. Four, to be exact. That means that one is going to Edwin, another to Moggy and I have two more left to hand out. So, let me know if you want a one of the remaining patches. If enough people want one, I might setup some kind of competition to see who will get them.

Whoever pokes his eye out, gets the patch. It's obvious.

I'll poke Quintin in the eye to get one of the patches. Will that work?

Console gamers don't get patches...

... they get updates.

So I had a thought... the American release date is the 9th... steam says it's the 11th for me... So I wonder if GMG will get me my code on the 9th and then possibly be able to enter it into steam and maybe still get the pre-order bonuses?

Does it work like that? Am I dreaming? I mean it's not the end of the world if I don't get them, but it would be super cool, considering I still pre-ordered.

That's right!!!

PC games get patches.

...sometimes.

Um... I'll take the patch. I'll take the sh*t out of that patch. You can tell marketing that I'll even use it in the photos I'm doing for my reviews. PM me if there's any still available.

I guess that means I'm too late for a patch? If I have to fight TheWanderer, I'll do it.

I'M BATMAN

Holy freakin' cow, he's BATMAN

Episode 188: We Will Be Watching, Commander

Bruce and Rob welcome Jake Solomon, lead designer of Firaxis' new XCOM, and interrogate him mercilessly. Jake explains his design choices and the trade-offs he faced in adapting and updating X-COM.

That's a pretty pimpin patch I gotta say. Sad to see it's so limited though. You should do another print run down the road.

Thanks for the patch Tkyl, that was really cool of you. I was planning on doing something similar to what they guy was doing in the Destructoid video.

Maybe GWJ should make velcro patches to put on hats and what not.

Really good episode.

Were you guys giving away those patches at PAX-E? I swear I had one with all the other giveaway junk I tossed, but now that people want them, a bit of regret since I could have offered it here. Or maybe that patch was for Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Demo problem: camera limited to 45/135/225/315 degrees caused difficulty correctly placing team on both sides of final building. Non-demo needs setting to allow mouse look.

So does anyone know when the game will actually be playable on the 9th? I bought through Amazon, and it says it's available to download a 9:00pm Pacific on the 8th. Typically Steam games aren't available until 10:00 Pacific on release day. Though I believe some games (Borderlands 2?) are available at midnight.

It would also be nice to know if Steam plans to allow preloading prior to release day. At 10+GB (20 GB system requirement) their servers are going to get spanked once it's released.

I'd like to know before I schedule an "illness" next Tuesday.

First and foremost: WANT!

Second: Anyone else try 3 monitors and on the demo have the cut scenes show upside down and soldier's heads disappear, but the hair stay?

Well of course the hair has to stay.

The_Wanderer and Quintin_Stone, PM me the address you want the patch sent to.

Tell me I need 3 monitors to play this game. Please. Just give me a reason, i'll do it.

It would be exceptionally cool for the game to take advantage of 3 monitors in different ways. I could imagine a situation room type of displays while at base. 1 screen running news stations and reports of locations of invasions, one for research projects etc, center for mission planning and staffing.

Aw dammit, tried to play the demo but it doesn't support XP.
Time to upgrade I guess...

Better not, for Tamren's health.

I have a potentially stupid question for you, Tkyl. Would there be anything coded in the game that would prevent me from giving my saved game to another person for them to load up and play? I have an idea percolating in my head, and I just wanted to get verification before I thought about it more.

I honestly don't know. If you are playing on the Xbox or PS3, then yes. But on the PC, I'm not sure.

Mmm. Succession game.

Hmm. Will it run across 2 monitors off one graphics card? Like Minecraft? #doesnotunderstandgraphicscards

Also, velcro morale parches would be badass Edwin. I would finally have a reason to buy a nice tactical ball cap. Full color, OD, and coyote.

Mmm. Succession game.

Now that would be mighty interesting. Something along the lines of one or two missions per person then pass it on.

Woo!

After watching another video of poor play, I decided to order it. It was like watching someone trying to eat spaghetti with a knife; I just wanted them to put the game down and let an adult take over.

I'm excited about playing it, but I'm also apprehensive . I'm breaking my own rule here, because after Brink I realised I shouldn't trust what developers say before a game is released. With best intentions, even if they try to be honest, things can go very badly wrong at launch.

Tkyl, thanks for responding, even if it was no help. I'll only be playing on PC, I should have clarified that first.

Well, this is what I had in mind. Hope it works!

Heya Tkyl, I'm not sure you can answer this, but I've been following this remake more avidly than any other in recent memory, so alot of things have stuck my head about stuff Jake and other folks have said. I'm only going to mention one part though.
Jake mentioned that what they had initially done was pretty much re-skin the original game, and made changes where they seemed appropriate - in the interests of originality and fun. He alluded to the possibility that one of the potential advantages to the PC build, was possibly being able to get a hold of one of those early builds as a bonus... I can't remember if that was a pre-order thing or not. Is there still any mention of that floating around the 2k offices?
I'm completely pumped about the game, changes and all - it's the first game I've pre-ordered in probably 10 years. Partly because it looks fantastic. Partly because of the format, but also in no small part because of the excitement of the folks making it and even your own activities in this forum. Your commentary and your willingness to hook up the community with a wee small part of the swag involved in this game is pretty cool. I'm glad I'm getting the pre-order and I already have the badge on the way for myself, but them poor consolers are in need of some consolation this time and by god they are getting it here.
'm really looking forward to the 9th - but worried that I'll be starting play later than all the folks digitally downloading it. Cruel tradeoffs.
