Rocksmith Catch All

Oh man, it runs soooo smooth on PC. But I own all the DLC on 360. I'll have to think about it but I'm sorely tempted to get the PC version.

Here's a little tasty nugget:

Avenged Sevenfold “Afterlife”
Avenged Sevenfold “Beast and The Harlot”
Avenged Sevenfold “Nightmare”

Rush “Limelight”
Rush “Headlong Flight”
Rush “Red Barchetta”
Rush “Subdivisions”
Rush “Tom Sawyer”
Rush “YYZ”

Well, now I'm sold!

Dude, are they going directly for all the Rock Band songs?

I'm guessing that overlap is more as a result of negotiations with the rights holders and what they're willing to license.

It's Y-Y-ZED!

Huh. For the past two weeks it's felt like Ubisoft reached into my mind and found the exact way to make me not spend any money on DLC.

Man, PC version is more of a lock for me now.

I guess an unexpected good thing that came out of not playing this that much on the Xbox is I don't have much DLC to re-buy.

If I didn't have a tiny screen on my laptop, I'd go for it, but PS3 makes more sense at this point, between having more HD space & attachment to the TV.

That's my issue at the moment, I have so much extra stuff on PS3 now I can't spend the money for the game AND all the DLC again. I'll just have to put up with the slow load times.

My problem is I just have to plug an HDMI cable to my laptop and then I get big screen and big sound, just like Xbox, but with all the PC improvements. I'm starting to think I might switch to PC, and very selectively cherry pick the existing DLC to rebuy, along with moving to PC for all future DLC purchases. I'll have to give a little more time with the PC version later to try really comparing it to the 360 to just make sure it's not just a case of "ooo! new shiny!"

Ooh, good point. Might have to switch over my order.

Oh man. It's probably not really fair to compare an SSD-equipped i7 system to a 360, but son, it's so much better. I just did some AB testing and the PC version is vastly better. Getting into the game is fast, the UI is crazy snappy in comparison, with none of the janky pause and stutter that things have on the 360. Songs load fast. The note highway is rock solid at 60 FPS and I can't believe how much smoother it feels because of that.

The only downside is that while it looks good on the big screen over HDMI, HDMI audio adds latency again. The obviously simple solution is to just use analog out for audio which is easy, but it's 100% more cables to plug in. Hey, I had to have some sort of con so that I wasn't just gushing about it.

I find it a little bit hilarious that this got classified in "Casual" games on Steam. I don't think there could be anything further from the truth.

Despite my last 'definitive' comment after reading LiquidMantis's comments I'm going to try the demo, and talk to the wife to see what she thinks. I've got my PC hooked up to the TV with direct analog to the sound system so it's an ideal setup. We've been playing multiplayer and it can be painfully slow at times.

See below.

Hm. On the PC demo I am getting noticable audio lag. I looked to see if there was any kind of DSP stuff running, and I don't see anything at least yet. I have never had a problem on the PS3.

Check around page 40 for tweaking tips.

Oh no, decision time! It's DLC Day! Although you can't get DLC for the PC version until it's released anyway.

The Shins - Caring is Creepy
Grace Potter and the Nocturnals - Paris [Edit] I'll error on discretion and tag this NSFW. Here's a lyrics video instead.
Gary Clary, Jr. - Bright Lights.

I'm sorry this is going off-topic, but where could I find out more about this virtual amp thing and how would I hook one up? Sounds great and I've been struggling with my micro amp.

The two big software virtual amps are 'Guitar Rig' by Native Instruments and 'Amplitube' by IK Multimedia. I'm fond of Amplitube, and because they now have the "death-of-a-thousand-cuts" pricing model, you can try it out in basic form for free.

To hook up your guitar, any modern audio interface will do to start with. Just find the appropriate adapter and plug into the "line-in". If you want it to sound super-nice, you'll want a low-latency interface with appropriate gain and a high-impedance input (something that is only used for guitars). There are now many cheap USB interfaces with guitar specific inputs. That's what the Rocksmith cable is. It actually has no inherent "Rocksmith-ness" internally

There are also hardware-based virtual amps around. It all started with the 'Pod' by Line6. Berhinger has a knock-off version called the V-Amp. I had a V-Amp and it was very convenient. It didn't sound as good as Amplitube, but it produced a more "real" guitar tone than any solid-state practice amp.

damn... i dont want to buy anymore dlc, but this set is almost too good to pass up

Yeah, I'll pass on the Shins but the other two sound pretty good.

Well, I've waited a year for this to come out over here, so I can wait another week for the PC version, which will actually make my life easier than if I got the 360 version.

Caved and bit. D/Ling the beta. 6+ GB.

Man I really like this on the PC. The menus are console-port crappy but they react so much faster that it is kind of a wash. Being able to use mouse and keyboard as inputs is really nice. Being able to play in a space that I can control (I've mostly surrendered my basement to the kids) means I will actually be able to practice more regularly.

Well, I caved and bought the three new songs last night. I still think I'll end up buying this on the PC, but I was in a sh*tty mood for some reason and playing through some new songs really turned that around, so I guess that was easily worth the $9. That's how I'm trying to rationalize the repurchase of any DLC: it wasn't that I purchase a product, I paid money for an experience. It's easy for me to feel I got $3 worth out of something.

Anyway, the Shins tune is easy but as a fan it's still fun. The other two are definitely a lot of fun to play, really catering to my taste for tight groove, lick-based rock.

I'm going to hold off on the PC version to see where they go with DLC pricing. I'd like to see some kind of "value pack" releases or something now that the library is built up.

Plus that would help prevent the Train Simulator effect on Steam.

PS Grace Potter is SO FINE. DAMN.

Any luck dialing out the latency?

LiquidMantis wrote:

I think so, but I need to play with comparing the PS3 to the PC and see how it compares. I really have no lag to speak of on my console setup so even the tiny amount of lag on the PC is now noticeable.

Even if I decide to skip it for now it's nice to know I can get it on Steam if (when) my PS3 craps out in the future.

FTFY.

Man, bass mode is super fun. Although I did notice some lag compared to my guitar. Not sure what is up with that.

I haven't been playing this lately on my PS3 because the game freezes at startup every time I look to play. From what I've asked, the Internet tells me I need to delete my save game an start over. Bah.
