The Horror Games "Play or die"

Pages

Its that time of the year
When we all gather in fear
To play the games that make us cry
And some that might make us die
Come play my game
You might go insane
The blood
The death
Its all a test
Come play with me.

Hey I just made a list of all the "horror" games I have and haven't finished or played. I'm going to try to knock as many of these out as possible before October ends. You want to join in the fun? If you don't a monster might eat you. Playing horror games is the only thing that keeps the monsters away in October.

Amnesia
Jericho
Deadspace
The Darkness
Costume Quest
Cthulhu Saves the World
Fear
Fear: Extraction Point
Fear: Perseus Mandate
Fear 2
Killing Floor
Limbo
Overlord
Overlord II
Silent Hill
Silent Hill: Homecoming
SPAZ
The Void
Zombie Driver
Deadspace Extraction
The house of the dead 2 & 3
Dark Souls
Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare

I might consider doing the entire FEAR series.

I'm currently playing Dark Souls so that should cover me :).

Going to start with Amnesia. Getting freaked out just thinking about it.

You should be. You dead, man. You dead!

I love a good, scary game this time of year. Even something like Alan Wake - which arguably isn't very scary but can be quite tense - is a good choice due to it's mood and atmosphere.

And now that you mention it, there are a number of games I associate with this time of year, either in theme or just due to the fact that they can scare the balls off me. Dead Space is a great example of the latter. Games like Realms of the Haunting, Sanitarium, Half Life 2, and Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines are all games that I strongly associate with Autumn/Halloween - some for obvious reasons (you're a vampire in Bloodlines) and other for more subtle reasons (the orange/brown color palette in much of Half Life 2 reminds me of the forests and yards covered in similarly-colored leaves).

That said, I should probably just play Costume Quest; I own it, but haven't touched it.

You should add Slender and SCP - Containment Breach to the list. I've downloaded both (free and/or beta for PC) but I'm a little too chicken to play them at the moment

You some kind of nancy, Wilma?

I've always wanted to play the Fatal Frame games, but don't feel like buying a PS2 or dealing with the awful Xbox emulation on the 360.

Also, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (Wii, PS2, PSP) beats the hell out of both SH games on the list there.

Anyone plan on going back and playing old horror games like Clock Tower?

Never played that one, but now I really want to re-play some Gabriel Knight 2.

Why is Overlord up there? They seem more cartoony instead of scary.

SPAZ? Switch that to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl. The underground sections are pure terror.

I always like to throw in a vote for Clive Barker's Undying!

I've only gotten a little way into Scratches, but it's been doing a good job of creeping me out so far.

There's another SCP game? Ruh-roh.

Was the emulation for these really so terrible? I've got the Xbox versions of the first two, but haven't tried them on the 360. It'd have to be pretty terrible for me to go to the trouble of hunting down an original Xbox.

I have a feeling that XCOM:EU on classic difficulty will be plenty terrifying.

You could try emulating on the PC.

I think you're reaching on a lot of these. Just because it has zombies in it doesn't make it a horror game.

Sounds to me like the emulation hate is an excuse to avoid playing one of the only truly scary games that should be on that list.

I may be doing a month-long horror-thon by finally nutting up and playing the copies of Fatal Frame 1-3 and Silent Hill 2-4 that I've had sitting here for years.

Then maybe I'll be tough enough to try Amnesia.

sh*t, Xcom's out in a week. This may be a problem.

What a man!

Don't bet on me finishing most/any of these. Historically, I've been able to play Fatal Frame in chunks of no longer than 30 minutes in the dark before I get freaked and have to run back to a save point and turn it off, then go play ponycorns or something.

Me too, but I might finally pop in F.E.A.R. as well. I've had that sitting around for far too long.

Wasn't that re-vamped/renamed Fatal Frame on the PS1? I read somewhere that it was...

There's a first SCP game??!

Ehehe!

SCP-087 is the first. Now you have to play it!

But... But... I just finished washing my shorts after playing Slender (of which there's a new one coming soon )!!

Clock Tower and Fatal Frame, as far as I know, are completely different games. Fatal Frame is about fighting ghosts with a magic camera. Clock Tower is about hiding from a dude with a giant pair of scissors.

I stopped playing Amnesia because it was so stressful If I go back I don't know if I should start from the beginning or just try to continue from where I left off.

Yeah, you're right. I was reading a list of "hidden gem" horror games, and they talked about the first Clock Tower being revamped from SNES to PS1 and named Fatal Frame: The First Fear, but they were wrong-- everything else I found says it was just Clock Tower: The First Fear. MY BAD, DAWG!!

I played for 30 minutes. I don't know what to make of it. The way you open and close doors is stressful in itself. Started to panic when I tried to close the door to the closet I was hiding in. I'm not sure if you can even hide in closets. The monster making all the noise never showed up.

Then I guess you can hide in closets.

...That time...
