NCAA Football 2012 Season Catch-All

Another weekend, another Cal game. We have no byes this year, so hope you get used to my weekly vomit of text.

ASU Sun Devils in Berkeley this week.. and while its hard to say any game in NCAA is a "must-win" this game is it for Cal. At 1-3 and the Cal faithful in an uproar, a loss today may cost Tedford the team and maybe his job. We'll need to win 5 of our next 8 just to be bowl eligible, and with UCLA and Oregon State looking much improved and a home game against Oregon and stanfurd still to come, not to mention our road woes, we really need this game to have a shot. Don't think its fair to ask Cal to be realistically any better than 2-2 at this point with road losses @Ohio State and @USC, but as is the case with fickle football fans, people are calling for heads.

I've never been one to jump on the Fire Tedford bandwagon... Having lived through a 1-10 season, 50 point drubbings and horrible coaches in the forms of Keith Gilbertson and Tom Holmoe, Tedford has been a godsend to Cal. The redone memorial stadium might as well be called "Tedford Stadium", as his efforts and drive were really what brought a new stadium. However, it really seems like the league has passed Tedford. We'll never be USC or Oregon... but it seems like the in old pac-10 every dog had its day and teams like OSU, heck even Washington State have made the Rose Bowl in the last 20 years while Cal has been consistently mediocre to above average during that span, and I think that is even catching up to this Golden Bear sunshine pumper.

Anyways.. game is at 1pm pacific.. about to head out to Berkeley right now.. hopefully we pull a win off. This should have been a gimme conference win, but with ASU D playing strong and our Offense anemic.. I'm not so sure anymore.

Petrino was a consultant for Cal this off season, if the job comes open I wouldn't be surprised if his name isn't on the short list. As it is, I'd rather not see any jobs open up as it hurts the Hogs.

Manziel better be tough, he's going to take some big hits this season if he keeps running like that.

Mizzou is losing to UCF, A&M is playing god-awful Arkansas close, and Kansas can't lose this week. Pretty good day so far!

Aggies are about to pull away.

Apparently Baylor and West Virginia are just playing offense today. 35-35 at the half.

Stele how was Miami?

Halftime score is Ags 27, Hogs 10.

Aggies agreed to trade coaching staff at the half right?

Gallows humor is the best humor!

Seriously though, I wish the Hogs nothing but luck after today, and a great coach after this year.

We need all the help we can get.

It was fun while it lasted. Kansas is still not going to lose this week!

That catch by Woods. Wow. WV vs. Baylor is crazy.

Any AD that stands by this staff is an absolute fool. I hope everyone in the football program is unemployed soon. None of them deserve to coach these players, or any players.

The Aggies will compete for an SEC title before the Hogs do. I hope our Board of Trustees wake up.

It is frustrating beyond description to watch a program you love so much go down the drain right before your eyes.

I want to see WVU v. either 'Bama or Oregon.

So after the WVU-Baylor 70-63 game today, I just want to know when ESPN is going to start ragging on the Big 12 for being terrible and not playing any defense and yadda yadda... you know, the way they did about the MAC after that Toledo-N. Illinois 63-60 game last year.

Cause I'd take those games any day over that 9-6 snoozefest we got in Alabama-LSU last year. Hell of a lot more fun to watch, and loads more exciting being 1 score apart and knowing that either team can score at any moment.

It's more fun, but defense wins championships. Alabama(or LSU) would shut down WV. Their wide outs would be mugged all game, and Geno would be pressured every down. He wouldn't have the time to make the plays. Look at the WV-LSU game last year. Meanwhile a slew of big tough backs pound the ball for an entire game wearing down what little defense WV has. An Oregon-WV matchup might see both teams scoring 70+.

I'll add that Texas might be playing some D this season.

Aggie fans on ESPN are acting like they just won the Super Bowl.

That catch.

I posted a bit last page:

FIU was fast. Teddy made his first two INTs of the season, although the 2nd was on defensive PI not called. Still a sloppy win, but a win.

Louisville had More fans than FIU. :D

What else to say...

FIU stadium seats 25k. We took up almost the whole side section with red. Attendance on the box score lists 12,318. If I had to wager, I'd say 7-8k of that was Louisville. Their student section was the only one on that half of the stadium that was anything but empty. I'm sure there were some people up in the luxury boxes, since that's the only place that serves alcohol.

Teddy looked human, at a mere 55% with 2 TDs and 2 INTs. Coming down a bit from that 82% and 0 INTs he had through 3 games so far. Like I said, some of it was FIU's speed. They've got those leftover Florida natives that aren't top tier but are still fast.

Can't really blame anything on the rain. It poured all day, so the field was wet, but the rain stopped about 10 min before kickoff, and only lightly drizzled in the 2nd quarter. So the balls weren't wet. Maybe the field still was, but that's no excuse for not getting more separation.

Defensively was the most disappointing though. We allowed our first 100-yd rusher of the year, and I want to say of the last 10 games or something like that. We really had been keeping the opponents in check. Some of it was them running a bit of no huddle, which we have seen a lot of and expect to see more tonight at Southern Miss. But other stuff was just us missing tackles. We did come up with an amazing stop on 4th and 1 at about the 10 yard line early in the 4th.

Defensive Line Coach said this week if he had to grade the season it'd be a C against the run and a D for pass rushing. Our coaches expect better, and our talent level should be there, we are just not executing.

But so far, for all the mistakes we've made, we're still 4-0. If we can learn lessons and improve while still winning games, I'll take it.

Tonight, a bit of old rivalry renewed with So. Miss. The two of us won 7 of 10 C-USA Football Championships from 96-05. But we've won the last 5 meetings, including a couple since we joined the Big East, and Charlie's first bowl win from the 2010 season.

Now if I can just find a feed of the stupid CBS Sports Network...

That was the Aggies' first SEC victory, and our first victory against an SEC team in years. And first win over Arkansas since we started playing again three years ago. Now, was that the real Arkansas? Not even close, and true football people know that.

Poor Tennessee. They were driving to tie with 2 min left and fumbled. Looks like 51-44 Georgia will be the final.

Bah, it was only thanks to a ton of UGA turnovers that they were still in the game.

Hopefully the Dawgs got that crap out of their system for the Chicken game, though the Chickens are currently laying their own egg.

UK beating SC.
Towson beating LSU.
USM beating Louisville.

This is some strange first half scoring for the evening games.

USM has to have the worst field I have ever seen. A little rain and the thing is like a swamp. Louisville had a ball right through a WR hands caught for a pick-6. Ugh.

Just saw the Arkansas - A&M score. I was willing to cut the staff a lot of slack considering all of the problems the team and individuals have gone through in the past few months, but that's crossed even my invisible line. New coaches ASAP.

Bizarre scoring this weekend by top 25 matchups. 70-63? 51-44? Holy cow!

Exciting scores, but I'd be surprised if any of them (except perhaps Kentucky) hold.

Well don't forget the refs totally bailed out SC in the Vandy opener. If they get the chance they might do it again.

Nevermind. Looks like momentum is seriously swinging SC's way. Fast TD drive, followed by a quick stop, and now they have the ball again.

Holy crap. Louisville survived.

What a rain storm. What a messy game. But a win is a win and I'll take it.

Well this one hurt. At this point our season is lost unless we can miraculously pull out wins against Oregon, stanfurd and Washington. Barring some miracle 2nd half of the season, the question is if Coach Tedford is done at Cal. Not only is our offense terrible, but outside of the Ohio State game, it has shown almost no progress for the last 2 years. Our Defense plays the softest zone ever (bend then break), and if the quarterback has enough time to go through his progressions someone is undoubtedly always open. Down 13 points in the 4th quarter instead of goign for it on 4th down, we kick a FG and still need 2 scores to win.. not sure what kind of call that is.

Cal is probably in the bottom 3 or 4 of the pac-12. We're probably better than Colorado.. though we don't play them this year so we won't find out. We shoudl be better than WSU but we play them in Pullman, so that game is a tossup at best, and that is probably the only game I'd call a pick 'em at this point. There is a chance we dont' win another game this season.

Complete disaster.. way to bring in a new stadium Cal.

Unfortunately I'm not sure who we'd bring in. We're not the SEC.. we can't pay coaches $3MM-$4MM or whatever those guys get down there. Chatter from bitter alums suggests a return to college football by Pete Carroll but I'm not sure how we can pay that guy. The most prominent pro-coach with cal connections is Ron Rivera in Carolina, but I can't imagine he's going anywhere... looks like we're going to have to start over again... terrible.

What's going on with LSU coolbeans? Slow starts and games much closer then they should be two weeks in a row?

And why the hell are they playing Towson? I think we should stop letting top 25 teams play so many FCS or cupcake teams.
