EVE Online - Catch All & new meat check-in

No we didn't throw the match but five minutes after it there were like two threads accusing us of having done it and we found it quite hilarious. The guy who flew the Vindicator didn't feel comfortable doing it but the primary pilot got delayed because of some unfortunate circumstances. Funnily enough he also burned stuff out in almost every practice.

If the match wasn't thrown, then there is a fantastic piece of photoshop out there or someone with a name very, very much like your fail pilots that is 20 billion richer.

Nah, we just sent him 20 bil from an alt to fake the screen
We were a bit bummed so that was a good way to have a laugh about the whole thing.

I'm guessing the blokes who lost their Vindy's weren't laughing that much though.

I'm back into this. My name is Malvolio Heleneto and this time, I refuse to rage quit (I paid for three months so financially, it would make me feel bad to quit). See you guys on GWJ chat.

These Youtube vids they keep uploading for AT10 are annoying the heck out of me. The commentary makes me want to gouge out my eyes. Not because it's bad, but because it's so e-sports and I don't like to think of EVE that way.

That and the vids are cluttering up my subscriptions.

Very, very pretty though.

We actually had a really good match yesterday! One more coming up today at 17:00 EVE-time if anyone wants to watch.

edit: our match from today. Dunno if anyone but I cares
Also, the fleetcomms from our match in case anyone is curious about that sort of thing http://fearlessdot.com/fleetcomms120.... We're pretty bad at this.

The AT is quite a thing, I'll probably write a bit about it once it's all done.

So how much was that Capital Ship that CP fielded worth?

According to eve-kill it's about 6 bil, with a 2 bil drop.
http://eve-kill.net/?a=kill_detail&k...

Bhaalgorn isn't a capital ship, it's a faction battleship.

Anyone who decides that it's a good idea to take a faction BS with officer mods into a 12 man tournament is not really using all of their brain cells.

Well, he meant flagship
Also, it's mostly just a show off thing really, but the officer neuts and webs do make a difference.

Yes, I know - but not enough in a situation when you know that the opposition is fielding a fleet as strong as yours and is quite likely to be primaried at some point. The Bhaal hasn't got a strong enough tank for that, and the difference from dropping in the t2 versions instead of the officers cost that pilot at least 4 billion.

I can appreciate what they're doing, but after watching a few of them I just can't take it seriously, even though I love watching LoL and SC2 matches. EVE seems like the professional wrestling of e-sports, the spectacle is flashy, and there's some skill involved, but can't help but feel that the outcomes are all fixed, and joke is on the viewers who think they're watching the real thing. I realize this might not be entirely the case, but the attitudes of the big players involved doesn't help. It's all trolling, counter trolling, and taking dumps on the general public who would kind like there to be some form of competitive element to EVE.

Well, people take the AT quite seriously. You can expect every pilot in the tournament to have at least 5% hardwirings in every slot, 6% for the richer teams and then they rip them out between matches depending on what they're fielding. When you're already spending hilarious amounts of ISK for the smallest edge officer mods aren't really a big deal ISK wise.

Teams like PL even buy rare ammo that costs a million ISK per shot, so you're looking at billions just in ammo for some matches.

I totally disagree there. The ship is never going to be safe in anything short of a 1V1 against an unprepared opponent, so why not go out with a little style on the big stage with the galaxy watching?

It's a better use for the ship & mods than a station ornament or a PvE showpiece, and I'd rather lose something like that in a tournament than some random battle in OU-812.

That works for the pilot, but not so much for the rest of the team.

The thing about flagships, like nearly everything else in the Alliance Tournament is that it's nothing like PvP anywhere else on Tranquility. Fleet setups here are based around specific archetypes of gang design; EWAR, Rush, Kiting, Drones, etc. Bringing a flagship(which can equip higher meta mods than other ships) is a gamble that it will give your team the extra edge to push past a setup that you might not be able to beat otherwise.

So far, however that gamble hasn't paid off; only one or two flagship that has taken the field has survived. It doesn't mean that fielding it was a bad idea, but simply that there was some mistake made, be it by the FC in calling targets, or overall comp, or who knows what. With PLs loss, getting smacked down hard by a pretty basic minmatar rush setup backed by assault frigs? Possibly a bad gamble. But even having lost what, 30 billion worth of ship? I'd have a hard time saying that they're hurting for it.

If I might respectfully disagree with your points...

- Losing a 6bn ship to a load of little boats isn't going out with style, it makes you look like an incompetent who has bought ships and mods that he cannot make the best use of.

- If you are in a gang or fleet battle in 0.0, then you should have brought the Bhaal because it fills a role. At that point you are contributing towards the goals of your corp/alliance, be it in attack or defence.

And a more general point...what is this 'flagship' idea ? AFAIK, you can fit any mods to any ship providing they have the stats to take them, so what do you think qualifies as a 'flagship' ? Any faction BS ?

In general, AT flagships are making best use of faction mods; with the Bhaalgorn flagships that have been fielded so far it's meant officer heavy neuts to make best use of the bhaalgorn's bonus to neut range and strength.

Again, nullsec fleet battles are not comparable to the constrained environment of the alliance tournament, so any comparisons between the two are moot.

No, there are very specific fitting restrictions on the ships in the AT and only flagships are allowed to fit faction / deadspace / cosmos / officer modules, but even then there are some restrictions (no meta6+ hardeners for example). Before the tournament starts you have to submit the name and type of flagship you'll be bringing (only T1 / Faction BS are eligible) and if it gets blown up in one match you can't field it again.

Fair enough, I guess allowing people to fit whatever mods they liked would make a bit of a mockery of the points allocation system.

From listening to the commentators, restrictions on tank mods are more to keep folks from slapping a massive officer fit on a Rattlesnake and parking it at zero on the beacon.

As for the tourney itself I'm playing my usual Monday catchup since I never math out EVE time to watch live. I have freaking *loved* the T1 cruiser slugfests that a couple teams have treated us to, just brilliant.

You might have heard about the attack on the US consulate in which 4 people died, one of those was Sean Smith a.k.a. Vile Rat, who is kind of a big deal in EVE. The Mittani has an obituary

If you play this stupid game, you may not realize it, but you play in a galaxy created in large part by Vile Rat’s talent as a diplomat. No one focused as relentlessly on using diplomacy as a strategic tool as VR. Mercenary Coalition flipped sides in the Great War in large part because of Vile Rat’s influence, and if that hadn’t happened GSF probably would have never taken out BoB. Jabberlon5? VR made it. You may not even know what Jabberlon5 is, but it’s the smoke-filled jabber room where every nullsec personage of note hangs out and makes deals. Goonswarm has succeeded over the years in large part because of VR’s emphasis on diplomacy, to the point of creating an entire section with a staff of 10+ called Corps Diplomatique, something no other alliance has. He had the vision and the understanding to see three steps ahead of everyone else - in the game, on the CSM, and when giving real-world advice.

Interesting to see both sides of the coin.

Yeah he was one of the most well known people in the game.
Really sad and completely senseless.

The starbase renaming in recognition is pretty amazing: http://evemaps.dotlan.net/alliance/G...

This is the part from the Mittani post that got me:

"He was on jabber when it happened, that’s the most f*cked up thing. In Baghdad the same kind of thing happened - incoming sirens, he’d vanish, we’d freak out and he’d come back ok after a bit. This time he said ‘f*ck’ and ‘GUNFIRE’ and then disconnected and never returned.

(11:48:19 PM) zastrow: when VR was in baghdad he'd always come into illum and be like
(11:48:23 PM) zastrow: f*ck MORTARS
(11:48:31 PM) zastrow: SIRENS AGAIN GOD DAMMIT
(11:48:39 PM) zastrow: and we'd laugh and he'd always come back a few minutes later
(11:48:49 PM) zastrow: :("

Your friend walks away from your online conversation, and never f*cking returns. It's heartbreaking.

The last thing he wrote was:

(2:40:22 PM) vile_rat: f*ck
(2:40:24 PM) vile_rat: gunfire

It's a bit surreal

I saw this yesterday. It's a great obituary and I felt like I knew Sean Smith a little bit when it was finished. RIP

Seleene really nails Eve and what VR meant to the community. A huge loss for everyone, especially his family.

Has anyone here ever gone to Eve fest over in Iceland? If so how was it, etc?
