Fighting Game Catch-All

I'm sad to say that I have to give up on Elizabeth. Her weaknesses are not outweighed by her strengths, particularly not for an inexperienced player like me. I need someone who doesn't hit awakened in 1 combo. I think I'll go to Akihiko, and give Labrys a much closer look too.

Liz in awakened mode is HELLA UNFAIR; dont drop her just yet. Zone with her persona..hit your opponent with status effects to help give you time for setups and to create space and when in awakened..continue to zone, do your BnB 3 super combo and heal yourself. You'll win every match as long as you keep a level head.

This is what I'm practicing, I just got really frustrated last night (probably shouldn't have been playing tired anyway). What I need to do is what I did with Ryu in SF4 - sit down for a few solid hours in training mode and get some BnBs into muscle memory for various situations. Right now I know theoretically how to play Elizabeth, but what I don't have is reaction to combos, so if I catch someone with j.B I don't capitalize on it. Part of this will definitely be solidifying a combo into Awakened, I know a couple already that will net me Awakened + Diaharan which will be totally worth learning.

You shouldnt be jumping with Liz ever.. unless you need to escape and a roll isnt safe or to continue a combo. You shouldnt be RTSDing anyone either. Let them come to you. Dont panic and always try to push them into the corner. The corner is your friend.

Most to the combos here are pretty legit. Even if you cant get fancy on people just yet.. learn the pacing and feel of your character. Decide what playstyle works best for you.

EDIT: I want to phrase that differently. Everything I've read on dustloop says j.B is her best poke, so why do you say I shouldn't jump with her? I'm not advocating doing IAD to approach or anything, just short hop j.B for zoning.

I'm on now, I'll be playing ranked until someone else shows.

Sorry that I missed last night; I passed out after getting home from work.

Is anyone planning on being around for Saturday?

I might be around this Saturday, gonna have to play it by ear.

Ahz.. I added you to my xbl list.. I think the confirmation is still pending.. I'm going to be playing a lot of Persona this week. Let's get some games in!

Sounds great, I was planning to make this a Persona week too, try to solidify some of my Elizabeth BnB's.

I played 6 games last night, lost every single one. They were close, but I could never pull out the last few hits. Really frustrating.

More P4A tonight, I'll try to show up early as I always do, and hopefully succeed this time.

*Distracted by other games. Sorry dudes.

I'm not seeing much point in continuing with the one-game-per-month arrangement, given only about 2-3 of us show up each week. Let's just decide here what we want to play each week, and have fun with that. Thoughts?

I'm game for Persona 4 Arena, Soul Calibur 5, or Street Fighter X Tekken.

EDIT: I put a bit of time into Labrys' challenges over the weekend, to see if she'd be a good alternative to Liz. The timing on her combos threw me off for quite a while, there's a lot more spacing in them than there is in the Liz combos I use. I do like that she's far less reliant on her persona, and of course that she has higher HP than Liz. I might take her online after I have a few really solid BnBs I can utilize.

Been playing mostly SF4 for two local tournaments coming up. I got annihilated by a Cammy player in a friendly 4v4 between our town and the neighboring city. I used to think Cammy v Honda was a great fight for Honda. Turns out I may be wrong.

I've also started playing Rufus as a second char to cover Honda's worst matchups. I'm ass with him now, but hopefully some training mode can remedy that before this Saturday.

As for Persona, I've only been playing it during casuals, and haven't been putting any time in training mode. And of course I've been unable to hang out with you guys because east cost, etc. (I've also been hella busy, but hopefully that's going to die down soon. [Probably not... >_<])

I'll be on tonight playing some P4 ranked, and I'll try to be on before 7 PST in case any of you EST folks want to get in a few rounds.

Cool. I expect to be around a console sometime after 4PM PST, depending on when I finish prepping meals for the next few weeks.

I'll try to remember to leave my xbox online so you can shoot me a message to play if you'd like.

I'm restricted to what I can play on my laptop, atm. It might be awhile before I can make another fight night.

I'm dead set on 100% this game.. So far i've been grinding arcade mode and story modes and im about 25hours in.. Still havent won my first online match.. as I've only played people locally. Hope to start grinding the challenge and score attack modes after arcade and story modes are wrapped up. So far I really like Akihiko, Aigis and Teddie. The problem is Akihiko is so crippled by his gimpy persona.. I cant really commit to using him as a main when i can literally drink a six pack and roll around on the controller with Chie and win matches.

Who is up for some TTT 2 for the Wednesday night session this week?

I broke my stick over the weekend. If I fix it by then I'll be there in all my Tekken noob glory.

Wow, really? What broke, and what kind of stick is it? These things are usually built like tanks.

Just gonna put this here, since the TTT 2 thread is necrotic.

My initial impressions of TTT 2:

- Fight Lab is a neat feature. Part tutorial, part story mode, part mini-game collection. I like that they fit it into the lore by using Violet.
- Online takes a long time to log into, because before you can even search for matches it downloads all the latest ghost and replay data. The upside to this is that you can watch replays almost instantly for any character you want, just like you would stream a show from Netflix. It's neat, but I wish there was a way to turn it off to get to the games quicker.
- All the customization from Tekken 6 is here, and then some. You can even customize the splash art for each character, choosing from renders and hand-drawn art. As some of the preview videos showed, you can get customization items that are actually usable in matches (guns mostly). The attacks are telegraphed and easily dodged, so you're not likely to see people winning because they rushed you down with a shotgun, but it's a cool addition.
- Stage selection is much improved, you get a mini-preview of the stage which shows you how it will play, so you can easily avoid stages you don't like (multi-tiered, small walled, endless).
- You can set up pre-configured teams for easy selection, up to 10 of them. Just hit Y at character select, pick it, and you're all set. This is great since the roster is freaking huge.
- You can play as a single character instead of a team, just like you could in Capcom vs SNK and it works the same. Your character has higher HP and you hit Rage sooner (about 50% health).

More to come as I get to play more.

The root cause is that I dual modded it a while back, but sometime over the last couple of weeks the cord must have somehow gotten unwrapped from the pegs that were securing it which allowed me to pull one of the wires loose. It should be an easy fix, but I need to figure out what I did with my tools first.

Ah, I assumed you were using a TE or something. Any chance it'll be fixed tonight?

Oh it is a TE, but I modded it so that I could use it on a PS3 too. It's looking unlikely that I'll make it tonight.

Damn, that sucks about tonight.

That's a cool mod. I assume you had to split the wires, run one set to each PCB, then install a switch?

Good games last night, Lothars. I'll be on again for a bit tonight (starting in a few minutes) if anybody wants to play. I'll be in TTT 2, but I'm game for anything, just ping me.

EDIT:

Angel/Lili/Alisa combo video, just like the days of TTT -

I'm starting to get my Tekken skills back. First night of online I got trashed, 1-5 for the night, though I did get matched up against some seriously high level players. Second night I did much better going 3-2 as I focused on being a bit more aggressive to punish unsafe wake-ups, and solidified my juggles.

I've got some good BnB's with Alisa, and one with Lili, but still no solid TAs to fall back on. I also need to work on my knowledge of wall combos, I know I can do a lot more if I get a wall stun than what I am doing.

I give Namco props for this game, it is the finest fighting game package I've seen to date. It makes all the right assumptions in the right places, and has done a lot to streamline the whole interface. Even compared to P4A it's better, even though the feature set is identical. For example, TTT 2 drops you straight into training mode while searching for a match, where as in P4A you have to manually set this up to happen. TTT 2 also gives you an option to drop back to the menu after each match, so you don't have to wait for training mode to reload then quit if you are done.

My one complaint, and it's minor, is the lack of a Challenge mode. Movelists give you access to 7 example combos for each character which is nice, but it'd be great to have a set of challenges for each character. It's particularly sad since they did something very close with the Fight Lab, but didn't take it beyond the basic game concepts.

Anybody coming tonight? I'm up for playing anything on the list.

I won't be able to make it again this week, sorry.
