Torchlight 2 Catch-All

So what's the class demographics breakdown? I see a lot of people on here talking about their engineers. I haven't had a ton of time to play, but have gotten an embermage up to 5 or so, and an engineer to 9 (I think).

Engy feels most self-sufficient to me. With skyrim i always have restoration. Engy filled that niche for me. Curious about the other classes but want to finish engy first!

The Outlander gets some restoration abilities much later. Around 25 or so I think is when I got my "stand here and don't die" ability. Until then, I did a lot of kiting and relied on potions (I kept the low level potions on my hot-key bar because a minimal health potion was a full heal. I didn't need to use the best available.

It also wasn't much of an issue because things died fast. It made bosses harder, but most bosses seem to be largely about the minions they spawn, and I could kill those in 1 aoe.

I've been most comfortable with Berserker and Engineer. Outlander is fun but seems squishy in single player during boss fights. Since they rely on crowd control and range, it became tough when I went up against strong single targets.

I've been playing a melee DPS engineer. I really love how punchy and satisfying all of his offensive abilities feel. Lots of big power AoE.

Have they made any changes to the outlander's trap/turret skills? I enjoyed the fire-spitting turrets in the first torchlight, and love things like that/proximity mines that kill enemies without me having to lift a finger.
I remember being a bit disappointed by the trap skills in the TL2 beta, so I'm curious if they've tweaked them/added more/etc.

The engineer has mobile mines and turrets; I'm not sure about the other classes. So far I've only used the mines, which are ok, but not to be relied upon. You basically throw out three at a time and they go after enemies and explode. However, I'm not sure how they choose which enemy to attack as they will often bypass the closest enemy in order to hit another further away.

Sure sounds like no one else is playing as Embermage. Eh?

I'm level 18 now, I think. Still having a great time with it. I haven't played enough to really tell how the passive abilities are helping, so I'm starting to pour more skillpoints into that. I also need to try other weapons, as I've mostly relied on cudgels thus far.

But yeah, no Embermage love?

Well I guess my Normal Berserker game is over at level 16.

Did my wolf dash power in this cave and am stuck in a wall. Reloading or restarting doesn't get me out. And whatever I clipped through to get in there I can't seem to get back through. Can't click on the portal I dropped either.

Is there some way to enable console and port myself back to town? Will I be a dirty cheater forever if I do that? Help...

Create a LAN game and use that. It'll reset your location to the town for the character, which will carry over back into Singleplayer.

Thanks. That seems to have done it.

A long walk back, but better than getting marked a cheater or whatever if I used the console.

The mark will only matter if you're afraid of persecution in public games. Unlike the first game, using the console has no effect on your game, achievements, shared stash, or otherwise.

I am playing as a mage and loving it, although I may have to upgrade my mouse to better coordin ate my powers.

I'm finally starting to feel the embermage now that I've gotten to the third set of skills. The blink is super helpful and big ball of lightning thing helps out DPS quite a bit as well. The early game mage was pretty lackluster, but a lot of casting classes in these types of games generally start out like that.

I like the maye skill that causes enemies to be teleported away when they hit me.

Sure does confuse my son, though.

Speaking of which, we could not play a LAN game today... was there an update that broke something?

Managed to get a full armor set while running through my single player Elite campaign.

Yup, rather than grinding gold to get upgrades from the auction house... I'm just getting items. Crazy. :)

Box Quote right there!

Playing as an Engineer and loving it. The mines are awesome, if you didnt already know you can throw out more than 3 - I have had as many as 12 following me. I tend to throw them out constantly and as I wander into a fight they go off and BOOM. As you upgrade they last upwards of 20 seconds so you can always have a surprise for an enemy - works great for the B@stards who like to port around the battlefield.

Played the demo with Berserker until lvl 6. I know it's only $20, but I got way too many games to play and not enough time.

I do have a question. Is there a delay between hitting 2nd mouse button and your ability firing? Seems like there is a half second delay since by the time my ability fires, the mob already knocked me back or it moved. Wondering if anyone else experienced this.

Well my normal Berserker game is a bit boring still. Tried out an Embermage on Veteran and wow that is fun. Luckily I had already dumped some stuff in the shared stash so at level 3 I already have some nice dual wands and things are looking fun.

Nice that I had to actually use a couple of potions to make it to town this time around. I ended up with 80 or so of the basic potions on the Normal character before I started getting drops of the 2nd tier potions.

It seems like it happens when you hit the mouse button at the same time an enemy with knockback hits you: the knockback gets priority.

Tried the demo with an Outlander on Veteran...

Are boss fights supposed to be 20+ minute slogs, or an I doing something wrong?

How far does the demo go? I hit the cap on the original Torchlight demo pretty quick, but the one for TL2 has kept me busy for two decent play sessions and still shows no sign of ending.

I'm going with my melee focus engineer because I played the original with a ranged fighter and towards the end felt like I was missing the point of the game. Also, taking down bosses was a slog. Will very likely try a ranged character on Hardcore once I'm done with the first playthrough.

From what I've read the secret to outlander is to pump a lot into focus and dexterity. You can ignore strength almost completely, it wont increase your DPS by much.

Hmmm. I've been doing Str as my second skill because it seems to up base damage as well as crit damage %. With having roughly 50% crit chance, increasing crit damage seems like the best way to up my damage.

For engi, I do 2, 1, 1, 1. Is that what everyone else does?

BlackSabre wrote:

I randomly pick but mostly focus on strength or vitality. I've been trying to have my vitality 15 points higher than my strength just because I like being organized. Early on I was pretty even but haven't put a point into focus for about 15-20 levels. I do occasionally pump some into dexterity.

Just beat the end boss on normal. Got somewhat challenging at the end but as long as I ran away for a few seconds my health regenerated quickly.

I'm about level 54 now. If I can get a mod that expands my stash and I'll be a very happy camper.

For my outlander I put 3 pts into Dex and 2 into Vit. Then the next level I put 2 into Dex and 3 into Vit. I then do that again. Then on 5th and 6 level jump put 3 into Str and 2 into Foc then 2/Str 3/Foc.

3/Dex 2/Vit
2/Dex 3/Vit
3/Dex 2/Vit
2/Dex 3/Vit
3/Str 2/Foc
2/Str 3/Foc
3/Dex 2/Vit
and so on.

I mentioned just recently I think Outlander is a bit weak against the bosses. There are a couple single-target damage skills but they are mostly geared towards crowd control and ranged attacks, which are not great against bosses. On the other hand they can be very effective with a partner because they can slow the mobs while the other character takes out the main boss.

I agree with Fedora, Dexterity and Focus are probably the key attributes for an Outlander. They need to crit a lot.
