Sweet! Any details? What is included in the demo?

I can't seem to get the demo to actually download.

I'm sure the servers will be wide open and ready for fast downloading as soon as I get home from work, right? RIGHT?!

Demo's been pulled. Nothing to see here. Move along.

Edit: Demo page is back up and actually working. Everything is fine. You can see everything.

ITS DOWNLOADING RIGHT NOW AND I HAVE TO POST IN ALL CAPS DUE TO MY EXCITEMENT.

From the press release:

"Gamers who download the demo will be guided through two levels of the single-player tutorial campaign, experiencing the combat controls and effective tactics for defending humanity against the alien threat. The two tutorial missions will also introduce players to the XCOM base, where soldier training and researching alien technology takes place, and offers a chance to experience the tactical and strategic layers of XCOM: Enemy Unknown. The XCOM: Enemy Unknown playable demo will be available soon for console gamers."

So there isn't a lot of content in the demo, but it should hopefully give you a taste of XCOM.

A sweet taste we quickly take away, because we're cruel!

ME TOO!!

I may have a *cough* cold coming on. I may have to head home early from work so I, uh, don't infect my co-workers (with Chrysalids!).

I'm so sad I was away from a computer and couldn't get in on the GMG discount offer this past weekend.

AHHHH must run home!

For those stuck at work, looks like there is going to be a live stream of the game starting at 10:00 PDT.

I wouldn't do that. The demo is only about 30 minutes long and doesn't offer too much. It's a great taste and I can see how the game is going to play but it is very limited.

Looks great. Controls great. This is going to be a lot of fun. I have no idea how representative the demo is of the actual game. I didn't find the demo that great at explaining how I was supposed to do some things but I figured it out quickly enough. At one point the doctor suggested I capture but I was given no idea how to do this. When I ended up just killed the alien I seemed that I did the right thing.

It was really weird that all of the XCOM soldiers talked with American accents despite being from Sweden, Japan, Russia, etc. The game hitched horribly during cut scenes but was extremely smooth during gameplay.

Tkyl, why is there no "Controls" section under options? I don't even want to remap them I just need a reminder about how to do things.

Check under the "Interface" option in the menu. If there isn't an option to remap key bindings there, then it's because it was left out of the demo. I know the actual remapping of key bindings was added pretty late and I'm not sure if it made it into the demo build.

Thanks! Just mentions input device but nothing else. Glad to hear it should be in the main game.

I just came here to post about that. Thanks for the info.

Just finished the demo, and overall I'm pretty satisfied with my preorder.

A few points I jotted down on my pad:
- I hope that the full version allows us to skip company logos, watching those could get tiresome after a while.
- In the first tutorial mission, if you scroll camera all the way to north and south edges it does a weird tilt and locks in place until you move it left or right. It wasn't doing this on the second mission, though.
- Music reminds me a bit of Deus Ex: HR. Not a bad thing at all.
- I really hope there aren't more binary mission choices outside of tutorial. If I have 20 soldiers in the base, I should be able to assign squads to multiple terror sites.
- Mission brief: Collateral damage is not a concern. Fine, I'll just level the place with frag grenades and rocket launcher.
- Hmh, well it seems I'll have to get used to looking out for drainpipes now.
- Looking at that floater, I hope my troops get the ability to jump around the map like that once I research flying armor.
- Is there any way to capture a live alien at the end of Shanghai mission? The only thing I could think of in the available arsenal was a smoke bomb, but that didn't seem to do the trick so I just lobbed another frag grenade at the politely clustered xenos.

Try to look for a text file that will let you turn it off. That's how I turned it off for civ 5. It might be called UserSettings.ini. Then look for a line of text that mentions about the intro video.

There is, but due to me not really being supposed to talk about the game, I'll wait to let you know how to do that once the game ships. Just remind me in 2 weeks.

So, played the demo. Overall I'm still a quite excited but there are some things I'm hoping are just that way because it's a demo:

1) No rotating the view? Trying to see behind buildings (even with the fade) is annoying.
2) The lack of control over your characters - in the second mission I was trying to make him go up the ladder that was there, clear as day but instead I had to use this drainpipe... that made no sense!
3) I picked the Shanghai mission but it put me into the NA mission. What? A bug?
4) October the 12th, really?! Why does NA get the same game a few days earlier on the same service I'm getting it on?!

Oh, just one question. I just downloaded between 2-5 gigs of data - will I be able to use that (or some of it) when downloading the final version of the game?

1. Rotating the view is done with Q and E. It doesn't unlock till the 2nd mission.

You can rotate between several angles using Q and E buttons.

Edit: Edwinhausered.

Haha, uh oh, rumor and scuttlebutt from twitter:

So the XCom demo includes all the movies including the ending. *facepalm*

Being stuck at work I cannot verify this!

Thanks, guys! I was hitting random keys but obviously I didn't try it at the right point! I figured out how to zoom in and up and down levels with the mouse but the rotating was beyond me. Why is there no character map in the options? Seems like a bit of an oversight!

Well, it's okay that it's there... I won't be looking!

Let me guess...
Humanity wins?

Try out the demo and it was really awesome! Can't wait for it.

My only problem is just how the game is running on my aging dual boot iMac. If this game wasn't turn base I would of just went for the 360. I'm not a graphics specialist but the game still looks very good in "low" graphic settings but still gets bogs down by frame rates. I'm hoping there can be a "very low" setting in the final version or some mod that optimizes the game better for me. I'm also hoping there will be a setting/mod to disable rain in levels, it really brings my frame rate to a barely tolerable level. Other than that I can't wait for the game!

Also, music is freaking awesome. Like somebody mentioned above it's very similar to Dues Ex: HR.

Another Trade-in deal at GMG for XCOM, now $36.99, for us that can't get better deals because of Steam's pre-order campaign.

The page at GMG still displays the deal, but when I click the banner at the bottom, I get a 404. When I click the banner at the top, it goes the the Age of Fear page, but it shows up as $19.99 even if I click the Buy Now button.

For anyone who successfully did the trade-in deal for $8 off XCOM, am I missing something? Or has the deal expired even though the promo page still exists?

Same composer.

I wondered if that was the case with the music.

Trying to figure that out myself.
